Along the same lines as my other thread as to just how good our start has been .. ( points total needed is based on 1 point more than the team in 3rd.. GD not taken into account)

    99/2000 - 88 points ( Charlton 91pts, Man City 89pts ,Ipswich 87pts)
    00/01 - 88 points ( Fulham 101, Blackburn 91, Bolton 87)
    01/02- 87 points ( Man city 99, Albion 89, us 86)
    02/03- 81 ( Pompey 98, Leicester 92, Sheff U 80)
    03/04 - 80 ( Norwich 94, Albion 86, Sunderland 79)
    04/05- 86 ( Sunderland 94, Wigan 87, Ipswich 85)
    05/06- 85 ( Reading 106, Sheff U 90, Watford 84)
    06/07 - 85 ( Sunderland 88, Blues 86, Derby 84)
    07/08 - 76 ( Albion 82, Stoke 79, Hull 75)

Average points required over the above - 84 points
    Average points per game- 1.826

    08/09 ( after 19 games)

    Wolves - 46 pts ( Average per game - 2.42)
    Blues - 40 pts - ( 2.11)
    Reading - 34 ( 1.79)

Projected over 46 games based on current ponts per game..

    Wolves- 111
    Blues - 97
    Reading - 82

Obviously its unlikely that neither us, Blues or Reading will end the season on the same average points per game at present.

Based on the average total need over the last 9 seasons then IMO it's reasonable to say that 85/86/87 points would probably be enough for 2nd spot taking into account that at present it seems that no more than 4 teams will break away.

That translates to us as the following from our remaining 27 games :

39 points ( based on 85)= 1.44 pts per game
    40( 86) = 1.48 per game
    41 ( 87) = 1.52 per game

Obviously its all estimates on what will be required but given recent history of this division can be used as a reasonable indicator as to what will be required.

I wont go into this in great detail, as it has been covered to death elsewhere, but the simple fact is this:

If you get one more point than the person in third, you become the third placed team.

Therefore, your calculations are based on becoming the top team in the play-offs. You need to look at what point total was required to come second, and beat that. Quite simple really, but seems so confusing to so many...

    Funny thread, this one.

Wolves should go for direct promotion (1st or 2nd) but have an eye for the possibility of a play off (3rd to 6th).
However a P.O. is not currently enough...

We need to aim for the title

15 wins away from the title. That is some scarey $$$$. FIFTEEN WINS. From 27 games. The only possible reason for people to think we won't do it is "it's Wolves". Which is rubbish, as this is Mick McCarthy's Wolves.

One game at a time... anything else is simply a distraction that will cost you. Remember the season of the great choke? A 10 point lead can disappear is a few short weeks.

Remember, we're not safe from relegation yet.

45 points from a possible 81. Or 1.66 points per game. I'm sure someone can tell us what Mick's average ppg for us was before this season. I'm pretty sure it was more this. The omens are good. You wait till we have Jarvis back. Imagine if the first half of the season is the weaker of the two!

1.586 in the league, excluding this season. 1.729 incuding this season.

Actually, in about half the seasons this century, we would be. Three more wins see us well past the totals of any relegated teams, and indeed the final "safe" team.

So we're agreed then. Still a little way to go before we can tick off the first of our points-based milestones for this season.

Our first target is always to gain enough points to avoid relegation (generally held to be 50pts). Next is to gain a play-off place (74-76 pts depending on the season), followed by automatic promotion (85-88 pts) and then the title (92-94 pts). We have to reach our milesones in order.

I'm not going to get too excited in that case until the 88 points target requires ppg of 1.586.

This sounds like me, but after last night, and the fact we are winning games not playing as well as at the start of the season, I actually believe we are going to do it now.

I am taking a game at a time and do not want to get excited yet but McCarthy's and the team attitud eis spot on at the moment. I reckon we need 96 points to guarantee 1st place

It was (roughly), but we were playing dreadfully anyway. Before Barnsley, we'd just beaten Preston and Colchester in successive home games 1-0, but both were awful performances. Plus we were 3rd, a handful of points ahead of a pack of teams, not top by six points with a 12 point gap over 3rd place.

You can't compare 2007/8 to this season, much as you can't compare 2001/2 to this season - the latter comparison really annoys me.

Even Reading in their brilliant league winning season had less points at the same stage we're at now. And i dare say they were all waiting for things to go pear shaped.

I can't see it as i think we have a well balanced squad in nearly all areas,

January to Febuary is when a lot of teams that have found good form early on will drop away when injuries and suspensions come it will be a strain on some of the smaller squads. Where as we have proven already that we can cope with injuries to key players.

Also i think there is a strong possibility that some of Birmingham and in particular Readings players may get a bit impatient if we have still got this impressive gap over 3rd place come the opening of the transfer window which will also help our cause.

15 wins out of 27 the way we're playing is definitely well within our grasp and also we would have to pick up less points in the remaining 27 games than we have in the opening 19. Getting more confident as the matches pass and the 3 points roll in without getting over confident.

i wasnt expecting anything more than a point from sheffield united away so im well chuffed, the table looks bloody amazing at the moment but i expect like many other wolves fans i still have a sense that we'll $$$$ it up as we have done in the past. saying that if we now start to analyse our challengers what do we see? firstly blues, ticking along, scraping wins and dropping points every now and then, relying on phillips coming off the bench to rescue them a la swansea, some of their players could be cherry picked if they feel the pinch after coming down, they shouldnt be written off especially if they beat us this week. reading, blowing hot and cold, hammered us, lost to saints, again their players are being touted for moves to the premiership especially one of their main goal threats in doyle, if only we could have got a point against them at home!!! sheffield utd, thugs!! not a team and 15 points away in 4th place, the rest i dont see challenging for top 2.
if our owner is good to his word and nobody is sold in january then we really do have a great chance of the title, yes the title!!

Given our present position, its also a plus that Blues and Reading have yet to play each other (and by definition take points off one another)...

I meant fate is in our hands and we don't have to rely on our rivals to lose games for us, therefore it's ours to $$$$ up.

  29. A point against our nearest rivals, Blooze, on Saturday, would keep our 6 point difference and even wins by the others wouldn't affect us much. So a draw wouldn't be a disaster this week. I'd prefer another win of course!

Just a shame we lost to Reading, really. We'd be 18 points clear of them if we'd won that!
