Just got home. Costa looks like a spent force. It's sad to watch.
@Biffana wolf, you posted this absolute guff to back up your claim that if Newcastle had the chances we had, we'd have lost by three or four! You can't back it up, because you're talking nonsense. Did you ever think Patricio is TOLD to play it out to the back three when he can?
Also, I've never said Patricio is good with his feet, he clearly isn't, and isn't of the modern 'sweeper keeper' mould, but would that have cost Newcastle three or four goals if he'd been in goal for them? Don't talk stupid
Me and thousands of others hope so too. Never give up on on a Wolf..over to you Helda Costa!
He was very good, we really need more productivity on the other side from Doherty up against Ritchie but that never came.
Good post. We weren't as clinical tonight and the final pass wasn't quite there on the counter. There wasn't too much wrong with the performance though bar the defensive lapse from Boly and Rui for their goal. 2 goals better in terms of expected goals is better than in 80% or so of our PL wins this season.
Yep, he has to move on in the Summer, for the sake of both parties.
A question for people who have seen it on TV and maybe seen some debate. Heard a woman on the way out saying "anywhere else on the pitch and it's a foul", referring to a high boot for Doherty's missed header
I often see things differently to others so let's see how this goes down.
I thought we were decent tonight.
I thought we created a reasonable amount without having someone clinical to bury it.
On the balance of play I think we perhaps shaded it. Maybe not enough to win it outright but I think we were the better side.
Patricio dived out of the way of the shot, like he was anticipating it going across him.
It wasn't a foul on Dubravka by Boly.
Costa is poor, Traore is poor.
The only thing Patricio had to do and he fluffed it.
Our shape, our movent and the movement of the ball is poetry.
Fitness and threat are great.
Just missing that killer instinct at times.
Jota was lively but we're missing that beast that I was hoping Traore would be.
Definite pen for the foul on Jota. 100%.
Overall thought we played quite well, should have won it really, plenty of chances, think their tactics were to nullify Doc and it worked for much of the game. Neves was a bit subdued, nothing quite came off for Jiminez but he ran his socks off as usual. Two bad mistakes by Rui for their goal but Boly as culpable for me, went to sleep, happens too often for my liking. This was nothing like the Palace/Huddersfield/Cardiff games, we created enough good chances, just one of those nights.
Foul anywhere else on pitch
Mane got sent off for it last year
Should have been easily 1-0 up through Doc right infront of goal, but fair enough he pulled out, could have been nasty if he didnt lift his head up last second.
We just lacked the finishing prowess today. Pen, have seen them given, also haven't, so that was a meh.
Costa was terrible, 0 confidence.
Moutinho was bad 2nd half, constantly gave ball away.
Glad to scrape the point, and still 7th so not a bad week for us.
Wtf is everyone on tonight.
Good first half, poor second half, overall thought a draw was a fair result. When that 95th minute equaliser went in from Boly, it felt like a weight was lifted and justice had been done.
Oh , and Matt Ritchie you are a diving cheating ****
He defended superbly and was our biggest attacking threat all night. Doc only really got going after the hour mark and Jimenez forgot his shooting boots at home. It’s between Jota and Jonny for me, with Boly a close third despite the goal conceded which he should have done better with.
I heard the Newcastle player say that too, and I don't agree with it. Our back 3 seem more comfortable on the ball than about 90% of defenders in the top 2 divisions. If anything, it's Patricio who tends to panic when pressed. Or even when anyone is within 15 yards of him, possibly more so than the back 3. Leicester certainly were playing on this and Newcastle also.
Boly was odd tonight. His heading and tackling were top notch and his goal was just immense. But as you said, he made some unforced errors because he was over confident.
A bad mistake for the goal.
Newcastle parked the bus.
We generally controlled the game and made a few decent chances, ultimately getting a just reward.
Benitez livid about the additional time which was added due to Newcastle’s own time wasting substitution and “Injured players” in stoppage time - only have themselves to blame.
Credit to Wolves for keeping on going to the end.
Rare off game for Jiminez, particularly second half.
Worrying to see Jota signal for himself to be subbed - must have an injury.
Well done Traore, doesn’t get given the ball enough for my liking, got it twice resulting in the Doherty header chance and the assist.
Costa was a pointless addition to the game.
Cav, is becoming a player that beats two men, moves into space, then screws up the 5ft pass every time
Everyone a 5 today
Moutinho the pick of the midfield for me.
Longstaff for United looks a player.
Benitez is such a tit.
Odd. I thought he had one bad kick all night....unfortunately the one that ended up in the goal. I was more concerned that he should havev saved it though than worry about his kicking.
For me a decent first half, except the last 5 mins. In the second half we looked a bit ragged. The substitutions weakened the team but we got lucky in the last minute. Traore and costa added nothing but we got away with it. I dont like the multi attacker approach as we lose our shape. He did it against forest last season and it didnt work. Tonight it sort of helped but we are better with our starting shape,
Totally agree. The Sky commentary was blatantly biased towards Newcastle. When we're playing Man City or Chelsea, you expect the whole game to framed as "A Big 6 team vs. A.N.Other", like we're there to make up the numbers. Because for years now, the Premier League has been the Sky 6 + 13 others to "make up the numbers". And Everton, who have their own place in purgatory. But Newcastle have always been media favourites out of all proportion to their actual success and I never understood why.
At least both Kluivert and Carragher were adamant that our goal was not a foul. That really surprised me. I think they are right and it's about time Benitez was held to account for his totally biased rantings and unfounded accusations.
Helder has been left behind. Sadly that's the only verdict I am sharing
I haven't read any responses to this thread yet but you would drop the keeper?! For who? The keeper who made a shocking mistake vs Shrewsbury?
He did only have the one, it was the one time you could almost see him still making his decision as to what to do before he kicked it - as he'd already sent a few straight upfield. Because it's ended in a goal though people are ready (and probably waiting) to latch onto it
Think @Okresh had a point about the save, he's anticipating a shot across him and the shot then goes straight at his face. It's still a keeper error, but not one I see him repeating any time soon
You are bang on with this. Blames everything on bad luck, officials, having no money, plays **** football and gets away with all of it. Benitez is gutless. And all this master tactician stuff from the likes of Merson, there's nothing masterful about sticking nine men behind the ball and lumping it up to a big strong #9
Replay showed the defender got the ball first....excellent defending
The first goal felt like it was going to be particularly important in this one. I mean there's no getting away from it, Newcastle are an absolutely dismal watch. Thank **** we don't have to watch dross like that every week. As referenced above, Benitez has the perfect foil with the Ashley situation to get away with it too, and tonight was no exception.
We thoroughly deserved a point. The Costa substition was baffling. Traore was a positive addition and we looked a much bigger threat once he came on. I don't think anyone was brilliant or bad, it was a decent performance and our fighting spirit got us a last ditch goal that couldn't have felt sweeter given their excessive time wasting tactics (even amongst their supporters)
The Boly goal was in no way whatsoever a foul, yet I was still surprised when it was awarded. Were that at Anfield on the last game of the season, there's no way in a billion years that's allowed. 'FACT'
That was the foul on Jimenez....the foul on Jota was a shirt pull early on...the foul on Doherty was the high kick that put him off scoring..on another day and another ref any one of the three may or may not have been given....elsewhere on the field all three would be given...
Getting the ball first doesn’t mean it’s not a foul as Willy Boly found out against city.
Your right of course...sometimes the ref makes the wrong call or he deems it to be a ‘hard’ challenge. On the other hand we can’t have defenders afraid to go near the attackers.
Hard earned draw
Feel sorry for those Geordies watching that negative awful football week in week out.
Their central defender (number 20) must be the worst defender I’ve ever seen and we should have exploited him!
Good performance, Benitez got his tactics right and Newcastle played pretty well.
I love watching Benitez when he's in a mood, muttering and chuntering away. He reminds me of Les Dawson.
Rui was clearly at fault for the letting the shot that beat him in. That said it had nowt to do with the ball having been kicked out of play we defended that very badly Boly and Johnny just seemed to not know what the other was doing. This was 2 to 3 phases from the ball being booted out of play had we had shaped up and defended properly then the kick didn't matter. Had Rui had saved like we would have expected him too the kick didn't matter. Read so much that the goal came from the throw in But so many other factors in play to them eventually scoring was the reason we went 1 down.
Other than that I thought the back line coped with the threat of the awkward Rondon well enough.
Thought Matt should have had a penalty for the foot up on the goal line having seen the footage back.
Bennett 1st half I thought we had left him in Marbzzzz and snuk Franco Baresi back in his place such was his range of passing.
Neves Moutinho and Donk didn't really get into it but thought the best of the 3 was the Donk. That said I can understand him being bought off and the other 2 left on for the additional creativity they potentially offer.
Jimi and Jota worked there socks off but the little breaks we have been having of late didn't drop. Both come out of the game with credit again.
Costa really feel for the lad but time he was took out of the firing line
Cav okay about all i can say nowt bad to say but didn't really light the game up.
Traore worst cross of his Wolves career gets the assist. Get the **** in lad.
Ref brilliant most refs would have taken the easy out on 94m 34s and given a foul on the keeper. Fair play to him.
Just want to say that I disagree with you.
Just outta curiosty who would you like realistically that we could get to replace the European Championshiop winning Portuguese No1? I also don't see that if Newcastle had our chances last night we lose by 3 or 4.
Given that we’ve won our last three, I’m very happy with a draw.
Bristol the big one.
Thought we played quite well first half without really creating much, though that one lovely move perhaps may have been a penalty.
2nd half they started to control and scored a soft goal really. Couldn't see us coming back as they looked very well-drilled and tough to break down, though I think Doc got a boot in the face nearly and that might have been a penalty too. Didn't see the equaliser coming if I'm honest.
Best player for us was Boly for me, apart from perhaps losing his man for their goal. Coady played well as usual, as did Johnny. Neves and Bennett ok.
Wasn't that impressed by Dendoncker, Moutinho, or Jota, and thought Jiminez had a poor first half, but livened up a bit 2nd half.
Overall, happy with a point, just about deserved it overall but Toon will feel gutted.
Absolutely agree with every word. Not quite reached the highs of recent games but on another night we could have had 3 or 4.
Newcastle came to spoil and the fat waiter got what his tactics deserved.
Thought overall we played well against a team set up to stop us.
Always looked like a 1 goal wins it kind of game. Unfortunately we went one nil down to due to an uncharacteristic mistake and it looked like our luck was out.
Team showed great determination and never die attitude to grab the draw (the least we deserved over the whole game). Another well earned point I know we’ve been making it look that way recently but this premier league lark isn’t easy that’s a good point, onto Bristol Sunday.
Two guys sitting next to me started moaning as soon as Adama came on, 'no positional sense, brain of a goat' etc. Great when he put over that cross, couldn't resist asking them to remember what they had just said! But Costa? Is he this season's Bonatini? Looked completely off the pace and lacking any spark. All in all, an average day at the office, but not terrible. But the passing fell to pieces as soon as they scored, and not for the first time. Worrying. But our never say die attitude got us out of jail again! Boly the saviour once more!
