having become unbelievably excited by tuesday's game and spending the past three days on the internet rather than doing my real job, two things leap out at me:

1: No-one is taking us that seriously still (fine by me, I'd rather be 'utter gash' and sneak to promotion than being lauded and failing).

2: People are getting desperate in a bid to rubbish us- reading, sheff utd, blues, albion, bristol city all talk about our history of bottling it, coupled with the fact that we're not going to last the course as we're 'not that good'. (can't be bothered to post links, but trust me), even more than we do. If that's all they've got to cling to, then we must be on to a good thing. Not that I'd ever tempt fate and say it out loud.

I'm enjoying life too much at the moment, dear god, for once in my life (3rd division championship 20 bloody years ago notwithstanding) please let it last...

I know you said you can't be bothered, but as you have put the work in already and know where to look, how about some links? Im always curious to see what other team's fans are thinking of us.

We don't have a history of "bottling it", it's a fallacy.

Nice one Deutsch - very useful. I like seeing what they all have to say....especially when they are quite pessimistic!

I've been doing a bit of the same. Early on some of the opposition supporters had some good things to say about us. Lately though, since I've been reading other boards, I have seen everyone talk about us like we are an awful pub side. Burnley and Sheffield United come to mind.

That's a good thing because it's jealousy. How many times in the past have opposition teams/fans/managers complimented us on our attractive football and how were the best team they've played after they have just taken 2 or 3 three points off us. I used to hate it, and now teams are saying were $$$$ means one thing only - were winning. Opposition fans hate winning teams especially Wolves ones and they will all be hoping and praying we miss it up.

Yeah, I thought Owen Coyle in particular was really churlish coming out with the usual 'they have a way of playing that suits them' On the same day Paul Jewell was waxing lyrical about Reading saying they would win the league...mind you greg halford thinks Sheff u have the best squad in the league by a 'million miles'

My first memory of us "bottling it" is from the 1947 season when all we had to do to win the league was draw with Liverpool at home last match of the season. Would have been our first time as League Champions. Lost 2-1 and Liverpool win the league even though we beat them 5-1 at their place. Then again in 1960 when we were on for the double/treble, 3-0 up at home in one game (can't be sure who against, maybe Burnley or Preston) but drew 3-3. We missed out by a point. (2 points for a win in those days.) Then of course there was "the slump season", most painful ever, when we allowed WBA to slip past us for promotion. Who says we don't "bottle it"? We're doing so well so far this season so why am I still nervous about it?

There you go, three seasons out of 60, at least one of which is debatable.

    It's a fallacy.

I think the big problem is that since getting knocked out of the UEFA Cup by PSV in 1980, as a club we've underperformed. First it was the utter nightmare freefall, followed by a couple of years of success, then since we've got into the second tier we've generally not done as well as we should have done on paper. We murdered Div 4, then Div 3, then came to a complete standstill in mid-table. Then Hayward came along, and Turner bought the likes of Geoff Thomas, Kevin Keen, Chris Marsden et al. Here was a bunch of great players, but permanently crocked!

Then Taylor came along, and we bought the likes of Daley, de Wolf and Froggatt - crocked again, so we didn't do as well as we all hoped.

Since then, we tended to buy "names", who turned up and strolled around Molineux whilst thinking of their bank accounts (no prizes for guessing who here...), and again we underperformed.

Then, we ran out of money and started relying on "young and hungry" - first season they do amazingly well. Second season, one or two signings don't work out, we have trouble with injuries, and finish 7th - which only looked carp because of the overachievement the previous season.

So no, we don't have a history of "bottling it" at all, just one of depressing underachievement.

  17. In fairness, they've mostly been quite decent about Murray, which must be hard for them seeing as he was our best player every time we played them.

Nice to see they've got such a reasonable, articulate chap as a moderator though!! Maybe Mutchy et al. could learn a bit from 'Lloydy' :p

96/97 was a pretty pathetic effort too though, from the final 30 points we managed a mighty 11 and allowed barnsley, a club who had no history of promotion and had spent the equivalent of one mark atkins leg, to breeze by us

we then launche dinto our play-off "assault" by conceding two 90th minute goals to effectively end the tie at the first hurdle

If you end up on 76 points, you don't deserve to go up.

    96/97 was an appalling division.

    that's my point

with 10 games to go, we had 65 points - barnsley in that appalling division finished on 80 points

so despite the huge funding advantage over most teams then, that assortment of journeymen and mercenaries - guided by the tactical nous of "the best young manager in the country" - couldn't even manage 16 points from 30 in that dismal division!

i agree, but my point is that this season could be counted as another (like the 3 listed above) in which the prize was there for the taking with the end in sight and a steady hand on the tiller and glory awaited... but we failed.

What he meant was, 'They have an attractive, direct way of playing that wins matches and suits this $$$$ty league down to the ground. How I wish I managed a team with such talented, young players. However, and if the truth be told, i'm not a good enough manager to be in charge of a historically great club like Wolves.'

Even if one applies the situation of the season 2001/2002, that situation has already been overtaken by our current team. In that season at the end of November 2001 Wolves were top but playing 20 matches they had only 41 points.

As it is at present we played one match less 19 and have 5 points more, 46. So we should have already surpassed that stage now.Be confident, let us take points tomorrow and we should reach a stage of no return this time.
