Love this, it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up !

But why do we sing it in the second half, and is it sung at a particular time that's relevant to the great man, or is it just at a random moment ?

Just a random moment, normally a boring moment in the match

I love that we are still singing this, as well as 'he's one of our own'.
I think it is great that it is sung at times when there are lulls in action and atmosphere, to lift the mood.
Perhaps, in addition, a regular spot for both would be into extra time in the second half to mark Sir Jack's age (91) and I also seem to remember someone saying that the funeral was 90-91 minutes in length.
Of course, if we had a video screen with a digital clock ....... sorry Edgy :D

Think it refers back to that magical moment in the second half of the Play-Off Final in 2003 when with around 10 to 15 mins left and we were 3 up, Sir Jack put up his thumbs in joy to the Wolves support...

Do we need a screen to tell the crowd when to do something, when it is happening from within the crowd at the point when they feel they want to do it.

I think this is great, that the crowd want to express their love to the great man without the need to be told when to do it. To me, that means everything and long may it continue.

I've learnt that corporate based instructions to a football crowd do not, and will never work. In fact, they end up as an embarrassing failure. Believe me I know from experience. Just look at card displays for instance, we've now done four. Three have been a total joke, but the last one (Sir Jack) even though I say it myself, was brilliant. The reason was because the crowd will only do what they want to do and if they feel it is the correct thing to do at the time.

Let the "thumbs up" evolve, because it is a brilliant and heartfelt emotion, our fans really mean it and do not need to be told when to do it.

Sorry if I have touched a nerve Pumpking - I believe I had already said it was great that both songs were used at any time in the match, and merely suggested a regular time as well !
I am neither 'corporate' or telling other fans what to do - merely a suggestion in the spirit of the OP.

I remember that Wiltshire because I was fortunate to be there, but my original question was why do we always seem sing the song in the second half which JW and Shropshire Lad have now answered.

This, keep it as a genuine doffing of the cap from the supporters not because we're told to.

No nerves left these days pal.:D

I do understand and accept your point, but what I do really like is the never knowing when it's going to happen thing. I do think that it's brilliant when it just seems to come out of nowhere. The best ongoing tribute Sir Jack could ever have.

Wish they still had those banners up on the video screens with Sir Jack watching over the game.

Couldn't we have one of those banners in the southbank to carry over everyones heads just before kick off. Would be brilliant that

Promoting things like this would get supporters to their seats more quickly in readiness for the ritualistic "passing of the Flag" .

Works for me everytime, perhaps we need a kitty to finance the purchase / creation of a good quality flag to be proud of.

That huge shirt used to be kept in the room where I keep the flags, but it disappeared one day.

Might be hanging up in Jezs wardrobe now. I thought I saw him wearing it in reception one morning.
I'll suggest we get another one.

Mention two screens whilst you are at it.....

It would be a dream come true if the promised land could be reached in this of all seasons, I don't think there'd be a dry eye in the house !

Would be great, maybe we could get one done thats a Wolves flag but also includes some sort of imagery or reference to Sir Jack?

PumpKing, if the club would give the ok for this to be used I'm sure we as supporters could finance it (just giving pages etc).

Seriously & taking this on from the supporters club thread can't we have designated flag bearers in the middle of & around the front of the South Bank waving allsorts of gold & black flags, a Jack Haywood one, various banners & whatever else then the stewards/staff can come & collect them & put them away again at the kick off?

It would make a better spectacle & might be a decent compromise health & safety wise, I know some hate the orchestrated nature of things like this but it's better than nothing surely.

I'm not normally one for getting 'choked up' and as a relative youngster compared to it seems most on here (sorry) I perhaps didn't witness the true extent of Sir Jacks leadership to bring Wolves back from the brink (although I certainly know about it) but how good was that original rendition of 'thumbs up' at the end if the Blackpool game? It was amazing

I think the play off game said it all....although having seen us over the years, Jack was brave in giving the thumbs up so early.

We still had fifteen minutes to bottle it !!

  31. I thought it a wonderful gesture just after he died but found it a bit cheesy last Tuesday. So too this flash light stuff. A nice rendition at the PO Final would be fitting.

How long ago was Steve Bull's last Wolves game? We still get "Stevie Bull's a tatter" most games...

I think it's a nice tribute, and it's one of the few songs people around me in the North Bank join in with.

A brilliant idea, whilst I like the idea of his image literally watching over us a huge image/flag of him with two thumbs up passing over the south bank prior to kick off every game would be a great tribute to the great man.

I see pumpking has already mentioned he would pass the idea on, which is great, but it would be great if we could finance/organise this ourselves as fans to show our appreciation for sir jack
