Things the club could learn from The Amex experience

Said it two seasons ago (albeit we were an unhappy lot then) and I'll say it again after yesterday's game - there's a lot our beloved club could do to make the whole matchday off-pitch experience at the Mol so much better than it currently is - they do if so well at The Amex, a great community club. My list:

Complimentary travel - we used the free Park & Ride at the University, but the match day ticket covers train travel to the stadium station too.
Good, friendly and helpful crowd marshals outside the stadium.
Away facilities decked out in our club colours (ffs!) - Wolves crests over the bars, signage and even the till covers. Made you feel welcomed.
    Beers and lager on draught!
Tasty and good range of pies - none of the Pukka rubbish we get at the Mol.
Pitch-side screens (don't get me started!) - really add to the atmosphere.
Great PA - seemed as enthusiastic for our lot as he was the home team - acknowledged our great away support (around 2100 tickets) when calling the attendance which the home crowd seemed to appreciate too.
Good, spacious-ish seating - always feels penned in at our place, although granted the Mol's a lot older.
    Generally friendly home fans?

    Anyone think of anything else?

    Nearer the seaside as well.

Been to the Amex a couple of times now and think it's excellent. They've got a good set-up down there.

    +++++++

    Great post.

I find the stadium very much soulless, however, but it is more than made up for by all the things you write about.

In terms of Molineux, the main point should be the welcome extended to visitors. Wolves could easily go much, much, much further down this road with:

    zero tolerance policing
    public welcome
information given to the opposing club on good pubs and restaurants
obviously a proper sound system to allow a good PA to make an impact, (the absence of which is one of the many scandals currently surrounding Wolves),
proper screens and a completed ground of course!!!

The club has to be proactive in this respect, contributing to the culture shift we need, which was discussed in the aftermath of last week's tragedy. At the moment, Wolves are light years behind an enlightened club like Brighton, sad though it is to say.

    This in Spades

    They make a real effort.

They had live music outside, a bike rack for those that came on a bike, plenty of room around the stadium for stalls and food outlets

The stewards and police were all very friendly, they went out of their way to interact in a friendly way with the fans

Screen Jez that actually work and put to great use

Televisions showing the highlights straight after the game not 24 hours later

We are soooo last century in comparision

And the beer inside was superb

The beer is Harveys from the local brewery in Lewes. My favourite draught in the UK, by far.

Being a city centre club I dont think we need complimentary travel, but there are probably plenty of other things we could learn and take on board.

As Wolvesjoe says we need to learn and improve in many, many areas following last weeks tragedy. We need to start with a zero tolerance policing policy towards football related violence in the city. Surely in these days of the the internet someone could set up an advisory and intelligence gathering website to find out what issues away fans are facing at Wolves and exactly where the trouble spots and flash points are.

It seems that unless something really serious happens like last week it is all just swept under the carpet and forgotten and the police dont seem to be taking the issue particularly seriously except when media attention falls upon them.

    Pukka pies?

The balti pies at the Mol this season are the food of the Gods. The main reason I have renewed.

I understand your comment about zero tolerance but that can go down the confrontational route

Bristol got it spot on, everyone was welcoming, the stewards outside the ground, the stewards inside the ground and the police. They all made the effort to talk to the fans in a warm welcoming manner. We were even having a laugh with the police outside.

The whole atmosphere was one of welcome and none aggressive.

Great day out....oh and we got to sing we hate Albion....:D

Does anyone else go to the football to watch football.. or is it just me?? Couldn't care less about screens, away fan friendly decor or any of that crap. Turn up, watch the game (hopefully win) go home is a perfect match day experience for me.

    I go for the atmosphere.

The screens were put to very good use yesterday, especially showing the goal opportunities from multiple angles.....helps us old buggers :D

On the zero tolerance front I meant the police using intelligence gathering to find out what is going on and who is causing the problems and then taking steps to eradicate the problems, rather than taking a heavy handed confrontational approach to every individual incident.

It could be installing additional CCTV in some areas, posting a couple of coppers in certain areas and gradually get on top of the ongoing relatively minor problems rather than allowing them to fester unchecked.

I'm also talking about problems unexpectedly cropping up in low/medium risk games like Notts County, Crawley etc. Obviously higher risk games like Leeds and Millwall will need a completely different approach anyway as all of the low-lifes crawl out of the woodwork that dont usually bother attending to watch the football itself.

Yeah happy for all that to be installed

But the coppers at Brighton acted and behaved very different to the ones around Wolvo

This ties in with the screens I guess, but somewhere where we can all know the amount of minutes that have been played. Granted there's the clock but I have to squint to see the time

    Lets be honest here...

Wolverhampton has always been a "Home Team Only Town" in relation to pre match drinking, My experience is based on my attendance from the late 70,s till today.

Very few teams supporters have taken base in any City Centre pub with the exception of the Police controlled Walkabout option over the past few seasons, Wolverhampton remains very much "Home Team Only Town" visiting supporters are generally not welcome in town.

The Notorious SA left its mark with its organised thuggery, but that was happening at every club from 78 onwards.

My preffered option is Away games, No Colours, Smart Casual Clothing , always happy to mix and chat and spin a few tails, hate the opposition for 90 minutes then handshakes and a few beers afterwards.

WMP have a long history of RIGOUROUS Policing methods and Wolverhamton remains a TOUGH City to visit on any matchday.

The screens at the Amex were put to good use

    Introduced the players
    Team list
    Time played
    How many minutes added on
Replays of key moments from various angles
Picking out supporters for supporter participation

The screens were clear, big enough and well managed

Jez, please take note, it is not all about money it is about providing the fans what they want.....

I want two large video screens.....NOW

Exactly mate I'm sure some want a cinema like experience, I get to the ground roughly 3-4 minutes before the game. Half time ill have a fag and chat to me mates. Full time I don't want to watch any highlights as I've just watched the whole game.
Alot seem to be moaning about police and there attitude, wolves can't do much about that you'd have to speak to west midlands police about that and why there a bunch of miserable $$$$$$$s with a chip on there shoulder.

What a welcome we got on arrival
Coach pulls up, we got off to be welcomed by a policeman who was a genuine Wolves fan, he had a wolves badge on display on his jacket, just brilliant..
He said he was preying for 3 points.
Al in all made to feel very welcome in and outside the ground, the little touches of the wolves signage etc in the concourse and toilets was good
Agree with Edgo the video screens were used to good effect and not bias by only showing Brighton good moments
Good point but only if we get 6 from the next two home games

Well you seem to be in the minority on here then mate. Football's about an all-round three-dimensional experience that doesn't begin and end with what happens during the 90-odd minutes on the pitch. Perhaps that's how it used to be and you're happy with that. The whole match-day experience thing at Wolves has looked and felt very tired for some time now. The Amex showed yesterday how it could and should be done.

We won't put on free travel nor council they want us to use council car parks, buses, trains anywhere decent with two miles being slammed with parking permits or yellows in recent years

    Stewards outside don't need any

Inside remember well from last time, wolves different feel maybe more intimidating if you was a nicey nice club... Don't make them feel welcome! Do you feel welcome at millwall? - but I do take your point

Food and drink always done max profit for wolves never for value for money

Our new "state of the art" (it isn't) stand is embarrassing in comparison. It's totally dull inside for the home fans, so there's no chance it's going to get any better for the away fans. In fact the ground in general is looking very tired now. If the match day stuff was better it wouldn't matter as much.

I go to watch the football and nothing else. Big clear video screens would help no end for replays, IMHO, support Edg fully on this.

If prices and quality of the food and drink was better I may partake, until then pub and Asda will do.

Its all just a bit fake for my liking. I really don't believe anybody buys a ticket for the "all round experience" if you can't remember the score or tell the time, i suggest you might lack the mental capacity to get there in in the first place. If you want "razzmatazz" watch the crap American sports. If you want football, watch football.

Maybe we could replace the plastic seats we have with sofas that would add to the experience to. Then because most of us are that sad and pathetic we can't at half time have a chat and a laugh with the people we go with to amuse ourselves we could for example on Tuesday night games show that nights highlights of emmerdale. After the game then we could all walk home with a big smile on our faces knowing the away fans club colours and badge have been decked out all over the away end we could even supply a bouncy castle for them to enjoy themselves even more.

    Brilliant

One thing I do agree with from the OP is video screens, I'd like to see replays of the goals just after they go in/half time scores

Apart from that, don't see much of a problem
