Why pick your best 10 players and then pick your number 2 goalkeeper?

Against Chelsea Rui looked calm, confident and very alert. He is our no 1 goalkeeper, euro winner and an international keeper.

Can somebody please explain it to me?

I will get fully behind the team but I want our strongest XI and we all know what that is.

    Agree with the OP.

Nuno clearly standing by his man, but if he plays Ruddy tomorrow, he will play him as far as we go...even if we get to the final.
It is now or never for Rui & Rui IS our best keeper.

I'm getting to the point where I hesitate to be critical of anything Nuno does to be honest. Do I think we should be playing our strongest side, including Rui, tomorrow? Yes. Do I trust Nuno's judgement on the matter. Equally yes.

Ruddy is our cup keeper. Tomorrow is a cup game. Ruddy plays.

Before you play someone else’s game make sure the rules are the same for both.

Romero uniteds number 2 is Argentina’s number 1 and has nearly 100 caps.

So why no vinagre, Costa, mgw, traore, cav who are all cup players?

Our squad isn’t big enough or good enough to have a cup keeper.

Why buy Rui in the first place if ruddy is good enough?

If we want to win this cup we play the strongest XI. This isn’t Shrewsbury.

Vinagre, Costa, Gibbs-White, Traore and Cav have all started league games this season, and played lots of minutes.

And they won’t start. But ruddy will?

Remember that cup run in 2018/19......we lost in the quarters due to a goalie error but nice to give him a game

Like it or not Rui is no 1 so why isn’t he starting?!

I would guess they had an agreement in place with Ruddy when they got him to agree a new contract with regards to playing in the cups. Was he not getting restless about his lack of 1st team football before he signed

If Nuno put Neves in goals I’d say bloody hell hes mad, after 90 minutes I’d probably be saying well done Nuno!

Remember all the questions of him before Cardiff?? Thank god he’s our manager not this forum

Ruddy is a senior professional who has done little wrong in a Wolves shirt. I'm glad he is getting game time, keeps him in on his toes and shows the respect Nuno and no doubt the players have for him. Has a great chance to be an FA cup hero tommorow night, no doubt he knows what that would mean to Wolves fans.

Look. I doubt there is anyone who loves Neves more than me. He is magic.
But even I am not sure he could play in both goals at once. :)

    (Totally agree about Nuno)

All of us on here are guessing on the reason for Ruddy over Rui. Wonder what the players’ think?
Oh well, in Nuno we trust.

Didn't I read on here the other day that Nuno spent much of his career as a reserve keeper?

Maybe because he felt he was good enough to step in at any given moment he's willing to back his own number 2 keeper to be good enough to do it too?

Don't question him - Nuno knows best.

One game away from Wembley should play the strongest XI IMHO, so Rui.

Despite one's superior reputation, IMO on current form there isn't that much between the two of them.

It is absolutely crazee if you ask me or my mama.

I do pray that Ruddy plays a blinder tomorrow..the situation might be a fumble away from turning toxic.

Way I see it..we are a professional club that is about to play our most important match for the last almost 16 years, and we play our second choice in goal.I find this really strange, but who knows..perhaps Ruddy is gonna do a Norris a la City league cup?

At the end of the day..in Nuno I have to trust, even if it involves trusting Ruddy tomorrow.

    Come on me......BABBIEEESSS!

    Agreed.
Ruddy seems to have less to do than Rui.... Maybe he's a better communicator.
Ruddy is also great at looking for that quick throw setting us off on attacks and also that quicker kick. .. He's immediately alert when the balls in his hands, which isn't part of Ruis game.
There are many aspects to keeping apart from making that flying save and Ruddy wins on some of them, Rui on others.
Ruddy won't let us down tomorrow

Coady has said that Ruddy communicates, and Boly was reluctant to pass back to Rui when it was the easier option on 2 occasions against Hudders. Jota is on his toes when Ruddy collects ball. I don’t know what they think but I see what they do.

Nuno is managing the team including the dressing room.
Dropping Ruddy would be detrimental to both.

Remember many posters were wondering, in real time, why Costa was first sub against Huddersfield? Because we all had an opinion which player might be the best sub, regardless of Nuno’s selection.
Same with the players. It’s possible, maybe even probable, that some might prefere Rui over Ruddy, privately of course.
But he’s the gaffer and you accept it even if you don’t agree.

He did (nearly 200 career appearances though!). In his last stint at Porto he was playing back up but played in all the cup games - including the final which they won

That says it all for me - Nuno drawing on his own experiences to make decisions. He'll know how he needs to treat his goalkeepers, he'll know the hurt of being left out and how to best deal with managing that situation.

Many posters were angry on MM at Nuno after the Huddersfield game mostly because he put Costa on as his first sub.
Just a question to your last line.....would you feel the same way if he started or subbed on Costa tomorrow?
I guess we all have different ideas on who should play......lol.....sometimes we don’t care what Nuno thinks...lol.

Totally with Jane on this as well.
Also Ruddy has helped us to get this far.
It is obvious that he was given the spot as our cup keeper at the start of the season. :)

It's a good point VW. I did raise my eyebrows at Costa but did not feel it was enough to warrant levelling any stick at Nuno.

Something I've mentioned before on here, we don't get to see what goes on in training. A player might be running rings around his team mates all week and catch the gaffers eye. He's put the effort in and deserves his chance.

So whilst I might raise my eyebrows, I'll bow to Nuno's superior knowledge because he's with these guys day in day out....whereas I can only really base an opinion on how someone fared last time they played competitively.
