From what I can gather, Burnley's total of 75 points from the 2001/02 season is the most any team has got without finishing in the top 6.

That will almost certainly be beaten this season. To think Stoke went up automatically in 2008 with 78 points is quite staggering.

I can't recall a championship race so close and as tight as this current one and with Wolves on 68 points in 8th then reaching 75 points and losing out is highly likely.

Have a look at statto.com for the tables over the last 20 odd years but as per the 2ppg thread, you only usually need an average of 72, and I think the highest has been 76 since the play offs started

In Mick's second season when we were the highest spenders in the division (Eastwood, Elliott and SEB etc), we missed out on GD with 70 points.

Puts into perspective what a good job Jackett has done this year.

Agree and the same next year if we don't go up, will probably be enough
This has been a great first season back, no matter how it ends

Sunderland came 3rd with 90 points in 1998. That must be some sort of record as well?

Points are only relevant to the season in question, comparing to other seasons is pointless as it doesn't take the relative strength of the rest of the league in any given season into account Someone will finish 7th with 80 odd points, they won't be unlucky, they will finish where they deserve to, in the same way as Peterborough going down on 53 points wasn't unlucky.

Reminds me of when people claimed we did better in our second Prem season because we got more points than the first even though we finished lower in the table.
