Well for us at least. Can't remember if the logo was red or black, and it seems in good nick for a 30 odd year old shirt but could be genuine. Thoughts?

Not sure I would pay $600 for any football top, let alone £600!

    Deffo not genuine.

It was black - and im sure it was printed onto an 'orange' cloth, then sewn onto the shirt. it was never red. The font was not Arial (as the sample) and more condensed and definitely didn't run over the pinstripes.

click here and look at March-May 1986. I did the research for this site.

My recollection is that it WAS printed in red straight on to the shirt, but it actually said Benjamin Perry Walsall Ltd. The shirt in the photo doesn't look right.

Pretty sure is was black text on a very dark orange background - i did scan a picture out of a programme from the time that showed it (albeit in black and white). Wish I could find it now....

Definitely did not have Walsall Ltd on the first incarnation, but I couldn't rule it out on later versions (in fact your reply does ring a bell about 'Walsall Ltd'). Bear in mind we only wore this sponsor for about 3 months. The photo I found was of Andy Mutch and Dean Edwards wearing the kit and it didn't have 'Walsall Ltd' on it then.

Also, as we only had that sponsor for 3 months, at a time we were about to drop into the fourth division, Wolves would never had made a replica of the shirt to sell. Hence the version the players actually wore had it patched over the top of the sponsorless shirt we had worn since August 1985 at Brentford.

The full name of the sponsor was Benjamin Perry Walsall Ltd as can be seen on the front of a programme from the same time. Would be great to see some genuine pics of the real shirt.

Anyone else think we should have a look at going back to striped socks?

My gut feel is fake. Can't imagine any of the originals surviving 3 seasons being used as training gear. If you see any pics from those days they trained in ten year old rags.

You are right - the full name of the company had Walsall Ltd on it. Just don't think the Walsall Ltd bit appeared on the shirts.

    yes please!

I saw that shirt too as I am keeping an eye out on ebay for a couple of wolves shirts myself.

My immediate reaction was that it was a fake and I have seen nothing since to change that view.

It is a genuine replica from that era, as it is the exact same as the 1985 replica I have , but just with the advert added to it at a later date.

my replica has the same stuck on club badge where as I am pretty sure the ones worn by the first team were embroidered

here is a copy of the email I sent that football shirts website: have a read and see if you agree with what I say as it would be good to get things as historically correct as possible:

"...for majority of the 1985-86 season wolves had the un-sponsored Umbro kit. However in the match programme for the game v Bury in March a new shirt sponsor was announced: Benjamin Perry as already noted. From the bury game onwards these sponsored umbro shirts were worn,However at the end of the 85-86 season the shirt sponsorship came to an end.

For the start of 1986-87 Wolves began the season again without a shirt sponsor.

this can be seen in the following youtube video of wolves first game of the 86-87 season in fact:

    http://youtu.be/HiBMwTlYfYA

In the October 1986 programme for the home game against Orient, a new shirt sponsor was announced: Staw.

In my email from yesterday I suggested that the Oct game against Orient was in fact the first game for the new Spall shirt, with the Staw sponsor logo on it, instead of in November as I had stated in an email to you a while back.

I stand corrected: yes the new strip was announced in that programme for the Orient game, but yesterday I got my hands on a programme showing pics taken during the Orient game and wolves were still wearing the unsponsored umbro kit!

So yes, the new Spall/Staw kit did in fact start to be worn in November after all as I first thought, so no need to change that after all. Possibly for the home game v Rochdale on Nov 4th, but definitely was being worn by the time wolves played Chorley in the FA Cup 1st round, 15 Nov 1986 as seen here:

    http://youtu.be/u5brRV7HRjE

So you may want to amend the 85-86 strip worn with the Benjamin Perry logo as it was only worn from March until the end of the season in may and then the umbro shirts went back to having no sponsor again at the start of 86-87 season until November when the Spall/Staw kit came out. "

Striped socks are bad luck for us. They were worn during the dark days. Never to be resurrected for me

Also worn when we won most of our trophies in the glory years! Perhaps it was the pin-striped shirts that were bad luck?

I still think you've both got it slightly wrong but I am willing to be proved wrong myself! ;)

For what it's worth, the graphic for the Staw shirt on that website is definitely wrong, it should be Staw Distribution and I am 100% certain on that.

You are correct about the Distribution. Just checked and seen the team photo taken after the 1988 Sherpa Van Fina win, and when you zoom in the word Distribution is there very small.... But definitely there!

which part are we both slightly wrong on you think?

Just the "distribution part"? or do you mean something else?

I hadn't focused on the Staw shirt tbh I was more looking at the umbro pinstripe era

is there anything from the umbro era we need to tweak?

Or then again maybe it was just that we had crap players :D

At last I have found the image of us playing in this kit (thanks Historical Kits!). Hope it proves it was black text (although the photo is black/white), and 'Walsall Ltd' was not on the shirt!

Excellent find! I still think the Benjamin Perry lettering was in red although it doesn't look like it on the photo.

actually was looking through old programmes and the B.P. sponsored shirts were first worn for home game against Rotherham United at Molineux back in march 8th 1986.

The sponsorship was announced in the programme v Bury later in March accompanied by a photo of the team wearing the shirts

and yep it looks like it is lettering on a patch put on top of the shirts.

Didn't like the SPALL kit at the time, because having Umbro was like us still being a First Division club in the wrong division. Changing to SPALL was like re-aligning ourselves with our new surroundings and accepting our fate.

I guess though we were more like a Sunday morning team at the time and weren't getting paid by Umbro and just used the kit until we couldn't find 12 decent shirts anymore before we went out and bought a full SPALL kit.

Having said that I have a SPALL Sherpa Van Trophy Final edition shirt signed by Mutch and Dennision that I think looks very classy compared to some of teh trash we've had in the interim.

The Spall kit was like a fresh start. The Umbro/pinstripe was a good kit - but at that time had 'failures' written all over it - despite the promotion success in 1982. The Spall kit looked a bit cheaper and had 'fourth division' written all over it (not literally) - but yes, it was as if we had accepted our fate - fresh new start, cheap looking kit - then sign fresh-face raw looking striker from Albion, rest is history :)

    yeah very true

the pinstripe shirt hardly saw many victories, certainly was witness to many humiliations, for me the worst being the record FA Cup loss to Rotherham United in the first round, 1985. I was gobsmacked after hearing that result.

All the same, for me it is my favourite wolves shirt and I daresay always will be: just because of the memories associated with those times will always be special to me.

I never got one of the Spall shirts but I did get the scoreline one that came out after the spall ones and that was a classy shirt too.

Going back to the umbro shirt: pretty sure the ones the team wore had an embroidered wolves head on it: correct? Replica doesnt.

I'm sure there's another 'Holy Grail' shirt out there from the very late '80s, early '90s?

I think it was when we were with Scoreline, and they went out of business pre-season and couldn't fulfill the contract. I'm a bit hazy on what exactly happened.

That saw us team up with Bukta.

I recall it well because as a nipper at the time, I won (and I never won anything!) a competition in Roy of the Rovers. The prize was the full kit of your choice of team, and year's supply of washing powder for it!

And given there was such a delay with the kits, I ended up waiting an absolute age for the prize!

However, with a big crate of washing powder turning up and being stored in the garage for months, I don't think my Mom has ever been prouder in me!!
