Standard Liege fans unveil a banner to welcome back former player Steven Defour.
We've given the likes of O'Hara and even Danny Mills a hard time before, but this takes it to a new level and IMHO is in really poor taste. Belgium FA were not impressed, can see them giving the club a heavy fine / points deduction

Don't see a problem with it ,artistic impression of what they think of him . Brutal yes but so what. Freedom of speech.

when what the flag depicts is happening to people now, the most recent on probably the same day ?
would you like to explain to the victims family that it's free speech ?

    Same, I think it's brilliant.

As you say it's artistic impression, they aren't really going to behead him but they are saying that he is dead to them.

Disgusting IMO and I bet a lot of Standard Liege fans are equally disgusted. It is just glorifying what is happening Syria, outside the barracks in London and recently in Paris plus the recent problems in Belgium itself.

Freedom of speech is one thing but that banner given the size of it has probably been orchestrated by the club or a small group of ultras and most of the the fans underneath it probably would have had no idea of the message until afterwards,

    The artist should be ashamed...

...that looks nothing like Steven Defour.

Bit extreme and over-the-top for my liking, especially given recent events. Not sure I'd want my little boy seeing something like that at a game of football.

Superb . Why don't they make a banner instead saying thanks for moving, hope you do well at your new club!!!? Would be a much better welcome!!!?

I think it's awful and incredibly bad taste. Do people read the news in Syria and how we are fighting an awful threat of terrorism (on home shores too). I would not want my kids seeing this at a football game, and imagine what the player and his family must think?

Can you imagine the reactions of the following at the sight of our version of the Ajax one in the South Bank:

    a) The senior citizens in the Steve Bull and Billy Wight.
    b) West Brom fans.
    c) The Health and Safety Officer

Personally, I would be rolling in the aisles laughing.

It's got nothing to do with Syria, or Paris, or any other terrorist activity. It's a very simple, very clear message. If you leave our beloved club, you're dead to us.

I really love it but its going to get an inevitable PC reaction.

I just don't get how people can get THAT worked up about a footballer. So much so that they were throwing seats at him. Just bizarre...

...although to be fair, I'm working on a similar design for Lescott (and potentially Sako) but with a crowbar and damaged knee...and on a bedsheet...

Yup it's Jason not a terrorist.

As the BBC link someone's posted says the banner took 6 weeks to make and planning started as soon as he signed for Anderlecht, long before the recent terrorist attacks across Europe.

Regardless of whether you agree with the banner or not, I think this is ridiculous. Complete over reaction.

  33. All for freedom of speech when it means critical thinking but incitement to hatred is another matter all together. Lack of brain cells somewhere along the line. It's nothing more than a game. People take it far too seriously.

I am more interested in how the heck do they produce such huge banners: how is it done? Like in small pieces then joined together?

Must have been quite an effort

as for the the content of the banner, its football, what more can I say!?

Are you sure that's all they're saying? Clearly Walloon doesn't translate too well into English.I think there are less inflammatory-but still effective-ways of representing this graphically.

Still Defour did lose his head- & got sent off, & the crowd ripped up the seats, so perhaps the intended gentle idiomatic satire was lost on their fellow Belgians.

+1. They got it all wrong.

They should have gone with a depiction of a fan booting a ball into his face from close-up.......would have been much more apt and done justice to the slogan...

Defour was their captain and essentially one of their own, to go to their bitter rivals when he could have returned to Standard was always going to go down extremely bad.

It was Figo going to Madrid territory.
