Obviously agree with Wolves! Some of the others are well ropey. (QPR? Palace? Ipswich? even Blues?) It is interesting to note that since the advent of the PL some very 'small' clubs have had their best era e.g. Hull, Charlton, Portsmouth, Fulham, Wigan,

It is also interesting to note that there has been a shift in PL membership from North to South. I think www.statto.com with its all time top flight league table gives about the best approximation of what the PL league should look like if the biggest clubs were all in there.

Do not under any circumstances include me in that!

  4. Didn't know Peter Knowles played in the 50's, he must have lied about his age.
B'ham City??!! Don't make me laugh.
+ the phrase sleeping giants should be banned.

Aside from that, bloody good idea.

It would be interesting to know how old he is, it seems like he is listing top flight clubs from when he was a kid. Your first season as a football fan is probably the most influential and so using his logic, Oldham, Leicester, Swindon (? probably), Wimbledon, Norwich and Ipswich are sleeping giants while Hull, Fulham and Wigan are upstarts playing above there station.

We on the other hand are in the right place with a fall away due after Christmas*

(*Not what I predict will happen in real life, just following the articles logic)

To me QPR, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City are the epitome of second division football.

Also, what is his obsession with kits? "Ipswich's snug shirts", "we like (QPR's) kit, Sheffield United's "eyecatching" red and white stripes (yeah, 'cos no-one else plays in those colours, do they?).

It's a pretty crappy little article, actually, just cashing in on Wolves' current profile.

I was thinking that, too. I always consider Bristol City to be a big club. But I'm sure even at that tender age you realized that Swindon weren't exactly a householf name!

Can't argue with Wolves (obviously), Leeds, Forest, Derby and Sheff Wed. They would all improve the PL over the smaller clubs such as Fulham, Bolton, Blackburn & WBA

Sheff Utd, QPR, Ipswich are the second rank set and wouldn't necessarily add very much.

I would have thought Leicester have more right to be in there than Birmingham.

As for Watford/C Palace - no way.

OK here goes; this would be my Premier League based on my own biased perception of success, history, tradition and size. (in no particular order)

    Wolves
    Manchester United
    Arsenal
    Liverpool
    Everton
    Tottenham Hotspur
    Nottingham Forest
    Newcastle United
    Leeds United
    West Bromwich Albion
    Aston Villa
    West Ham United
    Chelsea
    Sheffield Wednesday
    Derby County
    Manchester City
    Sheffield United
    Crystal Palace
    Southampton
    Ipswich Town

You cannot be in the premiership for your name, you have to earn the right to be there.

I felt quite sorry for them, I liked their away kit, the fact Mutchy was playing for them (he later said he left Wolves and went to Swindon becaues he wasn't as good as he used to be!) and the fact fact they just seemed nice (if crap)

I think Birmingham just squeaking the mighty Grimsby for 22nd place about sums up their stature - but Chelsea in 27th surprised me.

I think that the Mail may have been sarcastic in their reporting although I agree it can be difficult to tell in that rag.

Much as I hate them (and I really, really hate them) Stoke have more right to be there than Crystal Palace.

Just thinking a bit on this but shouldn't Fulham & Blackpool be in there? More from the days of Stanley Matthews/Mortenson & Tom Finney days. If folks think of Wolves in wimabigclub stylee these two were alongside us in the same era.

Totally agree, but all the sides listed would make the Premiership better, just because they'd attract more fans. It's sad to see more people in Molineux for a game against Blackpool or Doncaster than in the JJB for a game against Man Utd or Chelsea... and that kinda thing usually happens.

Couldn't agree more but in the case of us being referred to as a Sleeping Giant we've been doing it longer than Sleeping Beauty and Rumplestiltskin combined.

    Chelsea does not surpise me.

    They were $$$$
    They were small.

Once Abramovic takes his money, they will return to there normal status

They've been in the top flight since 1988 and made Europe many times before Abramovich took over. They went from a top four club to title challengers when they were taken over, that's all.

Deutsch, many times is an exageration.

They moved up a level, within the last 10 years.
When Abramovic Sells they will return to mid table premiership

Well they won the Cup Winners Cup in 1998 for a start.

When was the last season that they DIDN'T get into Europe?

Leeds in 40-odd surprised me, living in Leeds and listening to their fans you'd think they were the best team on Earth and always had been. Preston 5th was a bigger surprise though, I genuinely didn't know they'd ever been any good! Bit worried now that other spanners will think the same of Wolves!

Chelsea were generally rubbish before 1992 - with a short spell of being thoroughly average in the early 1970s. The biggest club in West London was QPR for quite some time.

As for Blouse - big club? Don't be daft. A club in a big city perhaps, but then so's Brentford...

Preston were one of the original members of the league and were the first winners I believe, in fact they were dominant in the early days and although not a big club crowdwise nowadays they should definitely be classed as a big club in terms of their history.
