I'm sure this was brought up on the 'wood ' thread page 87 or something , but do not read all threads for the sake of it so please do not shoot me down.
IMHO if we fall short of the play.offs I think we ve had a fantastic season , however I think there are Lots of similarities to 2003 -I won't list them as we all are aware of them , but the main point is form at the right time.

My prediction is pace setters Bournemouth ( as did sheffield Utd 2003) 0- mid table ( at Xmas ) wolves 3 on play off final day.

There may be some similarities but there are a hell of a lot of differences too. If it ends the same way I'll be more than happy though

Afobe is more likely to do the business in the prem than Sturridge I think.

I still think it's going to be a big task even to make the play offs let alone the top two. I think we will bottle it against the top sides and finish 7th or 8th.

I just can't see us getting anything against both Bournemouth or Watford, they score far too many goals.

OK just to start an argument this is my rating of the 2003 play off team against my current first team pick,

    Murray - 10
    Irwin - 8
    Lescott - 9
    Butler - 7
    Naylor -6
    Newton -5
    Cameron - 7
    Ince - 8
    Kennedy -7
    Miller - 9
    Blake - 8

    Total 84

    Ikeme - 7
    Iorfa - 8
    Batth - 7
    Stearman - 8
    Golbourne - 7
    VLP - 6
    Price - 6
    McDonald - 7
    Sako - 8
    Dicko - 8
    Afobe - 8

    Total 80

The main difference for me being that this current squad are on their way up whereas the 2003 team were mostly past their peak.

Newton 5 is harsh, along with miller 9 , and McDonald 7 being too generous. Other than that I agree

Newton 5 is too low and VLP 6 you must be anti right wingers. How many assists does VLP have now?

Bournemouth's goal scoring has dropped off a bit of late, wouldn't rule them out though will be a tough game on Tue and if we're not on top form we won't get anything from the game, but think if we are clinical in front of goal we can win it

That's either my politics or NWW corrupting my view. :D Never really rated Newton though. VLP may well be one of those to get better but has a way to go I think.

When I look at the '03 squad I think we should have won the league!!

Throw an Ince, Irwin, Rae into this time and we make the play-offs.

They drew at home to Blackburn today, no goals. They didn't deserve to beat us at home either. Probably the best time to play them at the moment

Completely different from those years ago. Hope it results in the same conclusion, however.

So Van La Parra is underrated by that scoring and McDonald is overrated??

Mcdonald has 10 assists this season...

The 2003 team had keeper that would have gone on to have been one of the best in the world, certainly the best in this country, and a centre half that was among the best in this country.

I'd say 2007/08 is a much better reflection.

The 2003 squad is far far better than this team.

Agreed. Although this team is very much on an upwards curve whereas a number of the 2003 squads' best days were behind them.

Shows just what a good job Jackett is doing in having them challenge for promotion.

I have to say, I personally, think that 2003 team is really overated. Cameron was no better than Edwards in my view. Irwin and Ince were influential beyond their individual performances where they were often showing their age, Miller was lightweight and Blake lazy and immobile. Kennedy was not better than Sako. Butler was a poor footballer really. Naylor was erratic. I wish we could find another Alex Rae though.

That team hit form at the right time and managed to sneak into the play offs, but for half that season it was really poor stuff. There was no chance that we would stay up really.

Dj said at the time ,and you could sense this ,that the players in 2003 were committed to rectifying the 2002 disaster.

In 2015 do our players have the same hunger or will they be content with something less.

I really enjoyed the triumvirate of Kightly, Keogh and Bothroyd and I think the Van La Parra, Dicko, Afobe combination (with Sako too) and the flexibility to go one or two up top has the potential to be better than anything we've seen in the last 30 years.

Not wishing to get too ahead of myself after three very impressive victories but I too can see a lot of similarities between the 2002/03 season and this one.

If I remember rightly we were bang average until Christmas/new year time, then I think we beat Brighton away and never really looked back!

We lost 4-1 to Brighton away that year! :D

Generally I think the turnaround was the Newcastle FA Cup win. However in a kind of backwards way that would almost come back to haunt us as I think it is well known that the powers be at the club saw that as a hint that the team was well capable to compete in the PL on a game by game basis.

Ah well in that case it wasn't that! Maybe it was Burnley away I'm thinking of, I seem to remember Butler getting an important goal after being that season's scapegoat for a while.

But do agree the Newcastle match and cup run in general was a key turning point in the season, and very much contributed to our lack of spending the following summer!

Your memory is nearly as bad as mine! Butler did score at Burnley but we lost.

Ipswich away perhaps? We won 4-2 and then lost 1 of the next 15. :D
