Anyone see Ronaldo's hand-ball in the Manchester Derby? At first he said he thought there'd been a whistle blown and then Ferdinand said Ronaldo been pushed before he hand balled it.

Any opinions either way to offer?

It was neither a push or a whistle blown nefore the handball. Ronaldo was a bit petulant - and fair play to the ref - he didn't have a choice but to send him off.

He's an idiot. No whistle, no push. Just head the ball anyway.

I don't think he can have any complaints.

He was shown a second yellow wasn't he? What is the rule regarding a straight red? Could it have been justified in the circumstances, or are reds only shown when the handball denies a goalscoring opportunity (eg, defender on the line)?

No, it'd never be a straight red offence. Deliberate handball is only a red card when preventing a goalscoring opportunity, like a defender on the line or a keeper outside of the box.

Because it's two yellows, United can't appeal it either.

    Ferguson said in his interview:

    1. The boy was protecting his face
    2. There might have been a push
    3. He heard a whistle.

    Make your mind up...

If he was protecting his face he could have just ducked. Classic case of making stupid excuses to deflect from doing something stupid.

  11. I think in one replay with the full sound there was a sound of a whistle as he went to jump for the ball, so he thought the ref had blown.
Interestingly if he had been clear through on goal and thought he heard a whistle he wouldve slotted it then pretented he hadnt heard the ref, so why block it with your hands when he couldve easiy nodded it in and then pretened he didnt hear the whistle?
Glad he got sent off any way i think he is a complete $$$$$$$*r

It wasn't a whistle you could hear it was a horn/claxon not quite the same.

I think everyone is being a bit too harsh on Ronaldo. What would you do if u had just spent the morning styling ur hair just so that it can look good when rolling around on the ground...would u head that ball...i think not. Safety first!

Rooney was sent off for doing that (albeit in Europe) wasn't he? Ronaldo's clapping reminded me of our game against Norwich few years back where one of their players did a yellow card-able challenge, then kicked the ball against Mickey Gray in frustration, there wasn't even an interval between the cards, two yellows and a red!

I thought Shackell was sent off for a confrontation with Karl Henry? He even mentioned having to seek out Karl to apologise when he signed didn't he?

ronaldo got what he deserved - what was he playing at - he mis-timed header, wanted to grab the ball and take it home "its my ball and I am going home"

he was lucky not to go for the foul on wright-phillips, especially when he clapped Howard Webb. He seems to think he should be immune to yellow and red cards cause he is 'ronaldo'.
