Watched a rerun of the game yesterday when I noticed the guy who was “playing” the trumpet wasn’t playing at all! Why go to all that trouble to put a microphone and stand in front of you when you were blowsyncing?

I’ve only watched the replay once, but that was my impression too.

I watched it back too. If he was playing, then he was doing it without moving his fingers!

I did hear he sounded awful in rehearsal but surely he played it?

You don’t necessarily need to to make different sounds on a trumpet, one can do it by adjusting one’s ombouchure.

My OCD has determined that I watch it again.... poster above said he didn't move his fingers which is correct, he doesn't look like he is playing to me , but they would have had to put a microphone there to make it look realistic

Wasn't he playing a bugle?! In which case the fingers aren't involved! It's all controlled by the mouth!
I'd have to rewatch but I'm sure he was playing a bugle.

Edit: just seen a picture, it was a trumpet. Still don't think they'd have got him to mime, what a cop out. Should of got the bandies in!

Yes, it's a trumpet, and at one stage it looks like he breathes in while the notes are still playing #trumpetgate

To be honest I really don’t think it matters whether he was actually playing or not. It sounded perfect on the night, and as regards to how it sounded in the rehearsal my lips are sealed. So I guess on the night so were the buglers. ;);)

Its not x factor. It was all part of a tribute to our fallen.

Does it really matter if he was or wasnt playing live?

I was able to reflect in those moments and pay my respects. Isnt that the important part?

I thought it sounded note perfect!

It must have been a rehearsal for his Top of the Pops performance.

Does it really matter if he got a few notes wrong? Its having the balls to stand there and do it, and shown the respect. Should have let the guy play unless it was his choice and he had a bad throat or was too emotional or something.

Not something else to moan about, sounded great on the night, which is all that count IMHO.

Some people live to moan and criticise, is it not tiresome always looking for faults?

It sounded great and the general tribute with the lights off and the spotlight on the centre circle looked great. It really added to the emotion of the tribute.

    Well done to wolves.

If you play bugle tunes on a trumpet, you don't move your fingers. The trumpet can play far more notes than a bugle by virtue of its valves, but these extra notes aren't required for bugle tunes, such as Last Post.

I thought it sounded superb and have to admit it sounded too good to be played live. Not bothered though as it was a great atmosphere.

It brought a tear to my eye as my brother was in the Royal Marines and the Last Post was played at his funeral.

None of the notes in the last post require fingering, also pretty hard to reach the high notes in cold, a guy used to come into my work every year to play it and would **** it up, pretty hard to stay serious.

Just to be clear. I wasn't moaning - makes no odds if he was playing or not, just stated what I noticed watching it again on Sky. I thought it was a fantastic tribute and the lighting made it even more poignant than usual.

My dad had been in the Navy and a couple of men from the RNA attended his funeral. They were incredibly smartly turned out and, despite their advanced years carried their standards with great dignity. When my dad's coffin was lowered into the grave, they slowly lowered their flags. My dad would have been really chuffed at their part in the proceedings.

You can get the same five notes from a trumpet without using the valves as you can get from a bugle which doesn't have valves.

As a retired member of the RAF I have taken part in many, many remembrance parades and it was often difficult to find enough people competent enough to play the last post. It is, for me, the most touching part of any remembrance service and if all you can get is some young RAF cadet who mucks up it is pretty upsetting for all in attendance. If, for whatever reason, the guy had to mime the last post so be it: it sounded bloody marvellous in the Upper Steve Bull!

I think the dimming of the lights and just a light on bugler then the single firework was stunning

Some people can. I could manage 4 1/2 on a good day, which is why I now "play" guitar (it's easier to sound competent on guitar).

It really does not matter whether it was live or not admittedly but those of us who are in the music industry know that it was a recording that was played and not the guy on view. Just saying it would have been more authentic if it was someone actually playing or just play the recording! Overall, the tribute was awesome, probably the best out of all the Premiership grounds..
