I have been listening with mounting bemusement to the scores of Blouse fans calling local radio/posting on bulletin boards etc claiming they will win the league without a doubt or words to that effect.

Now putting aside the fact that all that has happened this season suggests Blues could just as (more so?) likely finish 2nd or 3rd I think it comes down to psychology.

Over the last few years they have found it easy to get out of this league and we haven't...that's all that can explain the blind faith they seem to have.

Its really important we start believing. 2001/02 was a diiferent era with different players and a different manager. This team is much younger and has individuals who are not going to be prone to nerves like the previous team - the impetuousity of youth. I know in my darkest days I think ' here we go again 50+ points at halfway and still not got it wrapped up - it could only happen to Wolves'. BUT the point is we are top of the league on merit and we have to contnue getting behind Mick and the team (including Keogh/Collins et al!) to the nth degree...that is the least they deserve.

The next time I listen to WM I want to hear Wolves fans saying WE are going to win the league.

Talking about pyschology .... surely it's better for that "Birmingham attitude" to infest their fans and, hopefully, their players with a view that it might lead to a degree of complacency? I like the fact that we are playing it low key and we (as fans) are maybe a little bit wary of counting the old chickens.

I don't want to hear anyone crowing about how we're going to win the league.

To be honest I find it quite amusing hearing their fans and some of their players (Jerome in particular) saying they're going to win the league and start hitting top gear soon. I prefer for us to do our talking on the football field.

  4. At least this time we have a manager with recent experience of getting a team promoted automatically and a squad with a fantastic team spirit.

I know where you are coming from. I just think our 'low key' is often irrational lack of confidence based on an irrelevant past that might become anxiety later on in the season and transmit itself to the players. I know we have had our fingers burnt before but if this was any other club but Wolves we would be 'crowing'.

I don't. I prefer our more understated approach, let Blues and Reading think they will do it, they might, who knows. I heard a bluenose call WM the other day and claim after their 1-0 win at Plymouth as being the result that won them the league, they then lost at Preston.

Because of our recent history, no Wolves fan will believe we are promoted unless we are. Remember the Dave Jones approach at the PO final, understated, no waving, no flying the 'We're on our way to Cardiff' flags, just get the job done then shout about it.

    Be confident, but quietly confident.

    They have Wolves disease.
Remember when little Barnsley pipped us to the Premiership...there was no way that their team of nobodies was better than ours...and everybody said so, including ourselves.
They picked up vital points when our team didn't and they beat us fairly and squarely.
We were still better paid, richer, more exciting and more famous than them....they just finished higher than we did ;)

Cheers for reminding me about that BlahBlah. As a "local" I got endless stick that season. "Remind me again who the big club is" was just one of the comments I had to endure.

Blues do have the players and manager to win the league and given the wages they pay they probably should. I enjoy hearing their arrogance because, as we all know, it has a nasty habit of biting you on the $$$$. The same goes for the idiot at Sheff Utd, who claimed they were the best team in the league. Me thinks he really could do with taking a look at the league table, 17 points ahead of the blades as it stands.

I'll happily listen to them talking the talk, while we continue to walk the walk.

Birmingham will be as big a threat as confidence and over arrogance is. No need to shout about it IMHO til we are an established Premiership club. One thing getting there completely different staying there.

  12. To be honest, I dont mind if they want to keep going on about it, we shall see come the end of the season. I think its great that alot of Wolves fans are trying to keep their feet on the ground staying quietly confident

Seems I am firmly in the minority which is fine. I just think 'keeping feet on the ground' is okay as long as it doesn't equate with a lack of confidence and the usual Molineux anxiety kicks in..we must be positive, not nervous, as there will be times when results go against us. I think our problem is not being confident enough...this isn't Mark McGhee era 'sounding off.' Finally we have a team who will not let us down and we should be loving it not worrying about 'what if Blues/Reading catch us'. We may never see a season like this again. I don't want to feel it bypassed me.

I can see your point LBM and agree to an extent. I don't want to see arrogance which has burnt us before ie - "you'll only see us on the tele" but like you say, we should be making more of enjoying this season. Its been like it at the Wolves for some time and like you, i hope it doesn't spill over into anxiety and eventually nerves that filter down from the stands which it easily could. As fans we're also reluctant to ever sing "que sera, sera" in the cup in case it jinxes us yet when did we last make a cup final? Let the players keep going about things quietly, we as fans should be making more of it.

This season has seen a marked change in the attitude of supporters at Wolves and the sort of things being posted on here act as a benchmark. Comments made by players and supporters at other clubs are the sorts of things that we were guilty of in the past and I think it created a real hatred towards us. There doesn't seem to have been anywhere near that level of hostility.

I hope that we maintain this attitude as long as possible because I feel that its translated onto the pitch. The players are currently keeping their feet on the ground and will need to do so for quite some time to come. Lets keep the Mexican Waves firmly under wraps until we clinch the "P" word!

I`m trying to enjoy this season, but i`m not letting my hopes get built up. Seen us crack so many times its not funny. Maybe the fans not getting carried away is actually helping the team.

  17. We need the team to keep their feet firmly on the ground - and that's Mick's job and he appears to be very good at it - while we fans enjoy ourselves by being confident and noisy at the games, although of course that doesn't mean Mexican waves, just noisy support.

Then the team enjoys the atmosphere during games while continuing to work hard and to understand that they have achieved nothing - yet :)

I agree completely. Yes we need to believe that we can achieve what we want to achieve, but we of all people should know the dangers of shouting from the rooftops and telling everyone how we are the best team around etc - it backfires spectacularly - remember McGhee and his comments about Barnsley (I think it was Barnsley)?

Killgallon and Jerome have both recently appeared like arrogant petulant children in the way they have been talking themselves up while McCarthy and a young hungry wolves side have quietly and effectively gone about their business playing some of the best attacking football the club has seen for many years, scoring more goals than most other side in any league in this country. I think the entire club has shown a fantastic discipline and a great understanding that the job is nowhere near done despite an immensely promising start. I see no reason to change anything at the moment.

Let the likes of Reading, Blues, Sheff Utd and their respective fans talk as much to the press and call the radio phone-ins as much as they want - all I want is to see our club promoted to the premier league and I am uninterested in seeing us winning or engaging in a war of words which gives us neither a trophy or promotion and instead sets us up for an embarrassing fall.

In short, let's continue to let our football do the talking.

Mugwump and Chiswick I agree entirely with your comments. Let the other clubs do all the talking for the time being.

One of the most pleasing things about Wolves at the moment is the air of dignity about the club: something I think we share with Reading under Coppell. We don't need to mouth off in the press to believe in ourselves and get fans to believe. Blues and Sheff Utd sound increasingly desperate: you can understand why with the latter but if I was a fan of the former I'd be worried. They're second: they should be content with that.

Judging from past experience, an overly-confident crowd has led to a massively negative atmosphere when we haven't ripped teams apart at the Molineux.

Surely a quietly confident yet patient approach from the fans is a good thing? At least then the players won't feel under intense pressure to perform at home.

The time to do the talking is at the end of the season and I for one will then ram it down the throat of every Bluenose and Reading saddo that I know!

Some at Brum and Sheff U reckon they are the best and that's fine by me. Come the end of the season some $$$$$ is going to have to eat his words.
    They won't taste very nice.

Whilst I have some time for Reading and Coppell in this matter, they have kept their mouths shut and beaten us fair and square, Sheff U and Blues can burn in hell as far as I'm concerned.
Funny how the teams mouthing off are the ones least qualified to do so, IMO.

They sound desperate, as if to say 'if we say it enough times, it will happen'

Unfortunately, I expect a lot more of this type of talk as they try to wind us up and put more pressure on us as the season continues.

the fact is B'ham had established themselves as a mediocre prem club, hence the attitude. The rest is our own psychobaggage.

I can understand your concerns LBM, but who's to say the team aren't massively confident behind the scenes? I'm sure they've been on a high since their first win. In my view they can brag all they like as long as it's not in the media, and that they don't get complacent!

We've set the standards both on and off the pitch so far this season. I'd hate to think that we'd allow ourselves to be dragged down the level of B'ham and Sheff Utd. I think the players and fans do believe, we're all just choosing not give other clubs any ammunition.

Both Blues and Sheff Utd are trying to psych us out, but so far, our manager and players have kept their counsel and let the results do the talking.

We're still getting some of the "Reading are the best team in the division" and "Blues will win the league" guff but the table doesn't lie.
