Sacked according to sun reporter.
Guardian now confirm too.
He was taking Sunderland down. Not before time.
Shock / horror.
On SSN now
They should never have sacked O'Neill.
Terry Connor to take over....
Sherwood or Pulis to take over.
No surprise, be interesting to see who they go for with so little time left.
Can see them going down now, although it looked that way with Poyet too.
I think Sunderland are in a very similar state to how we were. Stale over paid players. They need to clear the decks. When they do that, then a manager has a chance there.
Step up Roy Keane for 9 games then appoint Allardyce in the summer.
in fairness it's a horrible job. Similar to Newcastle. Their fans think they have a god-given right to be top 6 every year, and when they don't they turn nasty. They need a reality check - cuz whoever comes in will be sacked this time next year - with no guarantee he will save them from relegation.
Keane would take them down such that Allardyce wouldn't take the job in the Champ.
Gus Poyet was the messiah to Sunderland fans this time last year, now he's a joke.
On balance, probably an average manager who will do a decent job somewhere.
Advocat, possibly McLaren should Derby fail to go up.
Ricky Sbragia to make a comeback
Not shocked one bit. They are a shambles.
For some reason Sunderland never seem to get it right. Always seem to appoint managers of decent calibre (though obviously Poyet is a bit of a nutter), back their managers strongly with transfer budgets & have a massive following.Yet despite all this they're always struggling to avoid relegation.
They have got more right than us in recent times to be fair!
They have appointed two slightly mad, sort of latin types who really haven't done themselves any favours. Di Canio is barking and soon alienated himself from players and fans. Poyet did better, initially, but he also seemed to have great skill in getting himself on the wrong side of fans. I think they need a safe pair of probably British hands to get themselves out of the mess they are currently in. No doubt I shall be excused of being a racist now!
Going by recent results the only surprise is his sacking wasn't sooner.
Let's hope Fletcher continues the good work
Same sort of thing crossed my mind OG.
Nothing against Sunderland but it would be interesting to see the reaction of Fletcher should they go down.
No surprise really, seems to have an excuse for everything.
Already in discussions with M-Boro, just to edge his bets
What's Peter Reid doing these days?
Dick Advocaat flying in for talks apparently. Another short term appointment by the looks of it. Has Sunderland's chairman borrowed Steve Morgan's business plan of hoping three teams are worse than you? Sunderland have just ambled this season, dreadful to watch. They might just stay up, but eventually their luck will run out.
If Advocaat gets the job, you just watch events snowball
I would take him back in a heartbeat if he would come.
He has been appointed
I wonder if it was following a recommendation...
Just hope he behaves himself and & doesn't end up getting several warninks from the FA
I agree re the last two appointments, but Martin O'Neill struggled to get them away from the relegation battle too & pretty recently he'd managed to get Villa challenging for the top 4 at times.
True enough-every time I see their team line up with those two ageing central defenders, O'Shea and Brown in it, I always expect the other team to win.
4 goals in 31 games.NO THANKYOU.
They have a terrible midfield also, I don't think the Adam Johnson situation has helped them.
One of my favourite moments of recent times was against Sunderland. Larsson diving for that penalty, taking it, missing it and us breaking up the other end to score and win the game. Cheating $$$$.
I think they'll be ok this season, it's going to be the 3 promoted teams straight back down I reckon.
if he came back here,i'd cut my season ticket up.
Yes indeed, I think the Johnson thing may have had a real bad impact, not only because he is a decent player, but for all sorts of other reasons. Throw in carthorse ageing centre backs and you can see why they are where they are.
