Be a shame if villa went down the path of renaming their stadium

some things should be left alone

What self-respecting business would want to be associated with that bunch of second-rate non-entities?

here's a radical idea: to help stop clubs going bust why not start to cap how much players (and their agents) earn?

the amount of money being thrown about is insane and surely unsustainable

Nothing to do with going bust. Their owners are wealthiest about... more to do with FFP.

Wealthy yes, wealthiest hell no... (Man City for one) but you are, of course, otherwise correct...

They cannot escape the clutches of FFP just by rebranding their stadium it doesn't work that way. They will have to pay just like other clubs have had to do.

There used to be a cap on players' wages in England until around 1960 or '61. The PFA, led by Jimmy Hill, campaigned to get rid of it.

The end of the wage cap tilted power in the game towards clubs with the largest attendances, meaning clubs like Preston, Burnley and Blackpool, which were able to thrive in the old system in the 1950s, suddenly began to really struggle. I think the end if the wage cap was also part of the reason why Wolves' golden age of the 'Fifties came to an end.

Could be sponsored by Wall's Ice Cream - Vanilla Park.

I’d be happy with the Fosun Stadium. The agreement being they become our feeder club and an outlet for us to loan our fringe players to give them more game time.

As they had Mr Potato Head as manager, and they like throwing cabbages on the pitch, they clearly have a thing for vegetables.

Therefore, the "The Allotment" would be quite apt.

So very true. Despite occasional peaks of success by a few clubs, I could name another dozen at least who now prop up the Championship/Div1, which, when dear Jimmy got his wish to remove the wage cap, were gradually sidelined until today we have the grotesque six. If we can make it seven we will be able to shove thoughts of relegation to the back of our minds. That will be for the 'B' section of the PL, an almost separate competition.

To be fair, players were paid peanuts and club owners were ripping them off blind, rarely investing anything back into the facilities or game. Just pack as many people onto concrete terraces as you can, and pocket the takings.

It's gone too far the other way now. In 1989 Michael Knighton nearly bought Man United for £20 million. That wouldn't get you Ruben Neves's left foot today.
