this team proved first half on saturday for 20-25 mins they can play good attacking exciting football.
after villa took the lead it was as though the shackles came off,the players seemed to forget the constant worrying about getting back to defend if we lose posession.
they started playing without fear, playing as a free spirit, the tempo was up every player wanted the ball the movement was great, crisp accurate passing, players taking players on and not thinking,i had better not take him on incase i lose it.
we were carving villa open time and time again, everytime villa got the ball we pressed them and got it back almost instantly.
i bet mick was nearly having a heart attack watching them throw caution to the wind forgeting their well rehearsed defend at all times attitude and really going for it!!
thank god for half time i bet they got a right $$$$$$$ing because they came out second half and you would not know it was the same team.
just made me think these players can do it, they proved that, alas it was only for 20-25 mins but it was great to watch, then the halftime teamtalk came and they were reminded of what is expected of them.
message to mick....take the defensive shackles off let them play without fear and constantly looking over to you(which a lot of them do) as your yelling for them to get back.
sure we might still get beat but that 20-25 mins is what watching wolves should be about.

You might be right. Mick may have said, forget that first half nonsense lads, I'm not happy at all let's change it.

On the other hand...Maybe just maybe....

Villa changed things at half time.

    Frimpong got injured

    Henry had a crazy moment

& Keane scored a couple of worldys

mick had no tactical response to villas change and we were on the backfoot well before frimpong and henry went off

I don't know about backfoot mate considering their equaliser came from Jarvo clearing the ball straight to one of their boys instead of clearing to safety.

I mean we weren't exactly cut open until we went 3-2 down (and 10men) and we're chasing the game and Villa probably should have scored one or two more.

But I agree that once Villa changed formation/tactics; MM didn't seem to do anything to give us back the initiative (before KH madness).

In between being behind and being ahead we had chance after chance after chance, as soon as we went ahead we stepped off the gas. Our problems started way before Frimpong's injury and Henry's stupidity. You have to give credit to Keane for his strikes but our free flowing, attack minded football stopped before the obvious setbacks.

That was a good period for sure. Sometimes though a break can screw up the momentum....

Even Man Utd fail to maintain dominating play like that for a full game.

I sit in the Quiet, more or less behind the dugout and I see players on this side of the field constantly looking over to Mad Mick.
He waves, shouts and points at them. I get the feeling that they can't make a move without Mick's approval.
Poor Hammill, in his rare appearances, looks to the side of the pitch more than he looks forward and it doesn't make him play better.

Frimpong went off on 56 minutes.

We dominated from the 11th minute to the 45th minute.

dont think we were under any particular pressure until jarvos cockup and then henry blows the game completely, that was unforgiveable from a seasoned pro. karl, you owe us one and so does jarvo while berra should also take is share of the responsibility too.

Mick doesn't allow the players to play with freedom, against Liverpool I would send the players out with the instructions of attack and enjoy. Let them go out and express themselves for a change.

Its one of Mc'carthy's greatest faults, the need to try and micromanage games. It instils anxiety and lack of independence in the players, hence the trend to repeat the same kind of mistakes. It particularly effects independent spirits like Milijas, Doyle and Guediora over time. All 3 have gradually lost the initiative-taking ability that they once had, and are now caught between trying to follow instructions and playing their own game. Jarvis and Hammill are also over-affected by McCarthy's ranting and raving. For some reason, Fletcher and Kightly can handle it better, basically ignoring him and doing their own thing.

Its very noticeable that the top coaches generally avoid giving instructions from the touchline, let alone shouting for most of the 90 minutes. They seem to trust teh players more and save any comments for the most important issues.

Mick micro manages. When bosses do that, you can't work with any expression or instinct. These are things that make the game we love. Mick should become a drill instructor in the forces.

You're dead right. That's 50% of the problem. The other 50% is that the instructions he gives mainly consist of "hoof it".
