Alleged is the key word here. They should not name anyone before they are convicted especially that $$$$e newspaper.

He's played for England before. Wouldn't take their title too seriously.

Why does it need to be a rumour when Sunderland have said they have suspended Adam Johnson following his arrest today :D

Because they need to sensationalise everything, quite how they have this level of detail for me is the most important thing.

Also would add in my line of work, something incredible tragic happened with a family I work with. This made the media and quite how the level of detail that was gained (before made public by the appropriate bodies) I do not know but ultimately it was a breach of confidentiality, data protection law and more importantly all common decency.

Away from this case of Adam Johnson, I think a greater consideration to the right of a private life, and appropriateness of reporting needs further investigation.

Why oh why has he been named? Has he been proven guilty in a court of law? No. So why has he been named? I detest this culture of guilty until proven innocent that we seem to have in this country. Even if he is proven innocent, his career will probably be irreparably ruined.

I think people need to wait until the trial before making judgements. Did he know her age? Under what circumstances did they meet?
Clearly a horrible scenario for his partner at this time.

I think it is a disgrace too he has been named without an actual conviction at this stage. Either tell all or nothing at all.

It was reported as being a LOADED gun -- how $$$$ing stupid to leave a loaded gun " lying" around legal or otherwise--perhaps that's why they found the need to report the fact ?

Agreed, and if she's reading this a needs a shoulder to cry on...

But in all serious, you have to feel for her as the press will no doubt invade her life now too.

Sounds like it we have quite strict rules on how secure it must be, although I haven't read all of it (it's quite long) I'm assuming you can legally keep it loaded as i didn't see anything suggesting otherwise.

It's a shame, I'll assume a similar scenario would be met in a club etc went onto bed somewhere as happens then all this kicks off & his/families/partners/childs lives will be ruined for a fair while.

I think any assumption or speculation is very misguided. Let justice run its course and comment once a verdict has been reached.

Exactly. The rumours are that he met her in a club.

As club staff are supposed to ensure that people in clubs are over 18, it's not unreasonable for him to expect / assume that she would be of legal age.

Some teenagers these days can look much older than they actually are when they wear make up and dress up.

It's a scary world out there. There's a huge difference between going out and knowingly sleeping with a girl knowing she's underage - and being caught up in the crossfire of innocently going out to a club, chatting someone up thinking they're 19/20, only to find out that they've lied about their age after you've slept with them.

If he's deliberately done it knowing her age, then throw the book at him - but if it's an innocent mistake that probably happens up and down the country most weekends, then the trial by media is going to be terrible.

I still believe that the law needs changing so that people are not named until they're found guilty (unless there are exceptional circumstances). The media will absolutely hound him now - and if he is eventually found not guilty, he'll still get taunted from the terraces for the rest of his career because mud sticks.

I don't know the specifics of this case but it epitomises what an absurd society we live where anyone off the street can walk into a police station, make an accusation no matter how spurious and that persons life is ruined forever. The argument defending this crazy legislation is that other victims "may come forward" but I would suggest their views may change if a drunk clutching a bottle of white lightening strode into a police station and claimed they had been molested. By the law of the land the stringent feminist brigade continually defend, they could be hauled to court themselves simply on the word of anyone and have their name splashed over papers/media destroying their lives irreparably.

The most important principle in any sane society is to defend the innocent whilst upholding the law ...destroying someones life simply on the basis of an accusation doesn't fall into this remit of a justice system that should be practiced in a developed country. If the case isn't strong enough to stand on its own merits without corroborative evidence to substantiate a claim or accusation from people "coming forward", it has no business making its way to court in the first place.
