some news on a former wanderer:

"New Zealand Football announced on Tuesday the appointment of Neil Emblen as assistant coach of the Men’s U-20 side.Emblen – former All Whites assistant and interim head coach – joins the management staff led by coach Darren Bazeley as the team continue preparations for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand later this year"

Saw Neil this weekend actually: he was in town with his team Wanderers SC for a national league game against Canterbury United.

Neil is well liked in New Zealand and we are all looking forward to NZ hosting the U-20s World Cup later this year

Option 1 “Of all the candidates who applied for the role, Neil’s skill set and his experience were the best fit for the position,â€

Option 2, his mate Bazeley got him the job.

    I'll go for 2

Osborn is probably Wolves' biggest ever Marmite player, personally in the hate camp

There was no finer sight than seeing Neil Emblen at centre forward.

I liked Osborne but I think he was let down by tactics in his first season and then got complacent there after. He needed a ball winner next to him, Corica. He never really had the protection he needed imo.
Emblen was a tryer but he was at the right level with us.

The most underrated player to ever pull on a Wolves shirt. 5 seconds ahead of every single player in the midfield he played with.

Shall we turn this into what player from the 90's would you like in the team for Saturday thread?

Looking back apart from the obvious Robbie Keane in the hole there's not many I can think of, god we had some awful players.

I'd love Corica back in the side today, just what we're missing, a bit of Australian flair...

They didn't really play in midfield which was what I was looking at & they are only 2 players out of about 150.

I have to disagree. I think he was one paced at best with his movement and lacked the ability to do much than pick the ball of the goalkeeper and shovel it down the channels or play a sideways or backwards ball. His career after leaving us was hardly glittering. In my opinion he was a key contributor to the wasted years of the 90's. The less said about Corica the better.

I think that you will find Keane's 250 goals in about 600 games suggest he was striker. We did have Cowans, Paul Cook, Thomas, Marsden in midfield. We also excellent defenders who would have today's team i.e. Pollett, De Wolf, Dean Richards, Thommo, Curle. We also had Don Goodman up front.

But the question was what player would you put in Saturdays team? Apart from Keane in the hole I can't see many massive improvements. I don't think Richards or Lescott for Batth would make much difference to our 2 shot per game ratio.

One player does not make team, if he did then answer has to be Bully imho. Further discussion is futile.

A fully fit Geoff Thomas. Put him in our side and we'd be close to automatic.

I was like a big child leading up to his signing, I exploded when he eventually did. Cant remember last being so excited over a signing in recent years than Thomas. Pre Wolves he probably never suffered any major injuries. Ironic thing is after Wolves he went on to play a decent amount of games too, albeit the injuries had took its toll. I was always gutted he never saw out his potential at Wolves - probably just about sums up the disappointment and underachievement of that era, particularly under Taylor.

I'm with you, when the going got tough, Osborn went hiding. The way someone is playing in midfield this year, he might already be playing, wearing a curly wig

Osborn was class for Reading and very good for us. He would make price and macca look dreadful one paced, limited players........ Oh wait :)

I remember on more than one occasion the crowd were getting on his back and urging him to get stuck in and his response was to kick out at an opponent and pick up a yellow card. His inability to differentiate between putting real effort in and playing the Muscat card was frankly pathetic.

Osborn was $$$$. He was decent at free kicks - but that was it.

I hated the whole McGhee era. Him and Colin Lee signed some absolute $$$$e.

    Mixu Paatelainen. Oh dear!

I agree re the McGhee era, but to say Osborn was $$$$ is laughable in my opinion. He was the best out of a bad bunch. I'm not saying he's was one of our greats, but he was a step ahead of every central midfielder he played with, in terms of his thinking. When he got the ball at his feet he'd turn sharply, and always heave his head up looking for a pass - our shocking off the ball movement (a common theme in my life as a Wolves fan) reduced his options. When he saw the right run, he could pick a great pass, a couple of beauties to Bully stand out in my mind but there were others. There was a lot more than a good free kick to his game. He scored some cracking goals and not a bad return at times for a midfielder.
Does anyone remember the left footed volley he scored against Fulham away, it may have been a cup game? It won world goal of the week on a tv program back then but I can't think for the life of me what the show was, it may just have been Soccer AM!

He was, Reading fans weren't happy to let him go. He played a blinder against us for Reading early in one season. He was also a very important in Palace's promotion side.

Can't believe nobody has suggested Paul Cook to play in our midfield. Like the player I was hoping MacDonald would be.

Or seeing him at centre midfield
    or centre half
    or left back
    or right back
    or left midlfield
    or right midfield
    or in goal

Which is exactly why I hated the McGhee era. Osborn was $$$$ - but as you say, the best of a bad bunch. McGhee's signings were horrific.

Even I could have played alongside the likes of Michael Gilkes, Steve Corica and Robbie Slater and looked half decent.

    I'm awful.

Mark Burke was another midfielder from the early 90s who seemed a bit ahead of his time. Would have been perfect in our Number 10 role
