I posted this in another thread earlier but thought it could be relevant as a new topic of discussion.
My point was I'm not sure we want promotion this year!!

I've come to the conclusion the handbrake has been on all season and KJ, KT & Jez have decided not to target promotion this season, although they'd never say that in the media or to the fans! It's just my opinion but when you look at this season I believe it's been about playing a lot of younger players, giving them experience and seeing who can do the job at this level ready for a strong push next season when we'll have all of the top earners off the books.

I'm not hammering the club either for this decision, I think if we went up we'd be nowhere near ready and although you can't definitely choose when you go up, we've played it safe this year and only paid money for young players who KJ really wanted. I think this summer we'll see a lot more ambition but I suppose funnier things have happened and the way this league is this year we could easily make the playoffs anyway, especially with Sako deciding to stay and see out his contract!
There's already been players supposedly looked at and deals being discussed for next season which bodes well, but having viewed this season now I'm pretty certain we are happy to attack next year a lot more than we are this.

    Anybody have any similar thoughts?

I hate hate hate people who say we are not ready to go up. If a team manages to gain promotion from the championship then they are ready to go up.

If this is what Morgan is like now, just imagine what it will be like when the parachute payments run out.

Thinking long term is fine, but we've got 1 more chance left next season and then you can forget it.

Sacrificing a good opportunity this season is criminal.

Agreed also fail to understand how anyone can believe we'll suddenly start investing in the summer, truly unbelievable based on the evidence of the past

    This :)

The whole club is being far too 'safe' at the moment from the board all the way to ten football side of things. In a way who can blame them for how traumatic in football terms the last few years have been. If anything this transfer window was always going to be quiet as the aim is and rightly so to consolidate this season. We all agreed that we would be happy with that last summer did we not??? The next window is the one that's will show the ambition or lack of it if I'm honest. Finding sako'so replacement, getting some steel into the midfield, teaching VLP to look up etc etc. Out of the 3 promoted teams I honestly think only we will finish in a higher position next season than we finish this.

    There's always the next window!

Should have that written above the club badge.

If they start now looking now they might be able to bring Sako's replacement in time for next season.

That was mainly my point, we'll have freed up a lot of the wage budget too and KJ will be a lot clearer on many of the young players and what signings need to be made and where.

It's a no brainer financially, Morgan is not going to put millions in so the only way to invest in the team is gain promotion now. £100 million next season then parachute money IF we come down.

Not interested in next season at all!!!!!!!!!
We have a chance of promotion THIS SEASON, we need to take full advantage of where we are now, if we don't sign anyone tonight and it very much looks that way, then a massive lack of ambition from Morgan
**** next season, do it now

I just don't believe we wouldn't want promotion. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Yes, I'm disappointed we haven't signed a couple more players but I genuinely believe it's more a case of not being able to get the targets in (which is a different failing) or perhaps us overstating the actual quality of our squad than some deliberate strategy to concentrate more on next season.

I hope the early bird prices reflect the lack of ambition of Morgan (if we don't sign anyone tonight) if that was the case the price of season tickets would be next to nothing

Wake up Morgan we have a chance, take it.

If someone offered him a few acres of land he wouldn't hesitate in buying it with or without planning permission in order to make profit, buying players in this window and maybe getting promotion would have meant big money for us for many seasons, beginning to get bitter now about the lack of activity, would love to be eating a big serving of humble pie at 11pm tonight

Anyone who believes Morgan doesn't want the PL asap is out of touch with the realities of owning a football club.

Of course promotion is the aim. It's whether he is badly mistaken on those he has placed in advisory capacities and their abilities to hack the big league.

He is relying on KJ carrying on grinding out performances and points with the bare minimum and if luck holds he might just do it.

Promotion has to be, and is, the aim this season. If it comes it will be what happens next regarding getting a squad big enough and good enough to stay there.

Even another relegation season in the PL would bring in enough to help the owner relax on spending.

But I doubt they are good enough at the top to establish properly in the PL. The only place fresh approaches have been ignored is in the boardroom.

QPR are also part-owned by the Mittals who are worth billions.

I think it's a fair point around the Early Bird though. If season ticket holders are that upset about a perceived lack of ambition then there's a very simple message they can send.

For me, Morgan providing funds is not the issue. We've spent nearly a million on Saville and £2m on Afobe because they were young players KJ wanted.
My main point was that we seemed in no hurry to upgrade the team and instead decided to see how we go with a lot of the players stepping upto this level for the first time. I feel this has been a decision made by the club as a whole not to go mad for it this season and just see how a lot of the untried players get on, and we as a club do on the whole.
I may be wrong but that's my take on this season.

I dont doubt that he would want to be in the premiership. What I do doubt is that he is not prepared to do what it takes to be in the premiership some of which you have highlighted above.

Targets not being available is no defence - especially as it happens window after window.Maybe the targets aren't right?!

I would've thought the embarrassing situation surrounding a forward in the Summer - remember that? - would have meant that any credible club would hit the ground running this month.

We've got people running this club that disappoint year in,year out.

Too many obvious opportunities have been missed, and they're not so stupid to have done it accidentally.

I don't think it's a question of trust, just basing it on the evidence of this year. Significant bids for Maguire, Wood and Delort. Bringing in Sagbo and Graham on loan (who were on decent wages). Not selling Sako. Paying £2m for Afobe.

I think there do need to be questions asked about why our recruitment hasn't been as successful as it could have been. I just don't see it as being part of some Masterplan to wait until next season.

    If it is, it's ridiculous!

His net worth is approximately $350m. Morgan is worth far in excess of that, even if he is "asset rich".

It means nothing, nada, nowt, zilch.

Gone are the days of bankrolling clubs via the owners wealth, Financial Fair Play has seen to that. This well intended ruling will do nothing but stagnate the game and ensure the big clubs stay big and the small clubs stay small.

It seems that either the OP is correct and we are taking a monumental chance on next season or we are excessively particular on both our player targets and the financial packages.

Thelwelll has a hell of a job though it seems, prepare dossiers of players we are interested in, but then we don't do much about it. I imagine he has a lot of time twiddling his thumbs.

I’ve long suspected that is at least in their thinking. I don’t agree because history has shown it is impossible to predict accurately who will and who won’t cope with the step up (Jacobs springs immediately to mind). Carpe diem!!!!

I think the problem is finding players in January who will make a difference is not easy and I think the hierarchy would rather gamble with low stakes at the moment. I have no idea how much cash is available but I think the plan is to hope we make the POs with what we’ve got and keep the powder dry until the summer when KJ will have a better idea of what he needs to add to get a squad competitive from the start.

Whilst not ideal I think it is a better option than the Bolton approach of buying mediocrity which won’t get better and they won’t be able to shift when they are found to be not good enough. Don’t know about the chap they’ve signed today but most of their other singings don’t leave me wishing we’d bought them!

I guess it all comes down to money and none of us know whether splashing another £2m now would leave us with nothing to spend in the summer. The other factor I haven’t seen discussed is we have few very saleable assets that could fund another roll of the dice, which probably says a fair bit about the real quality of the squad.
