Sad to leave, pull the other one

So another joins Kightly by trotting out this waffling BS.

Drives me wild when players some out with this guff.

If he was really that sad to leave then why not stay and help the club try and get back up.

All that childish tweeting mallarky about "headsgone" etc.

Bloke wanted out and good luck to him but don't try and make out you are sad to leave when you put in a transfer request.

He'll get a richly deserved "one greedy $$$$$$$" when we next visit the Stadium of Light.

On the other side of the coin, he's paid for our new bargain signings.

You can still be sad to leave even if you want to go somewhere else (as stupid as it sounds).

Loyalty is a rare commodity these days. End of the day, the selling of Fletcher & Jarvis could do us a world of good in the long run.

    I hope it does.

Just wish with such eagerness to get away Fletcher would realise these empty words mean nothing.

I get that but I don't think footballers think when they're asked questions like that anymore.

It's just become the basic, simple answer.

I do think he enjoyed his time here and hopefully, in time, fans will remember all he did for us (albeit in two seasons).

fletcher didn't go the right way about getting his move agreed,

but he didnt move for the money he moved to play premier football, sooner fans get that in their head the better

he deserves premier football, 20 in 40 games roughly starting is superior to what we were in the premier, even if we stayed up he would deserved a move to the next level

I thought Fletcher was an excellent signing and I enjoyed watching him play but being a bit of an old tradionalist I was saddened and disappointed to see just how quick he wanted out when no longer playing for a non PL club and showed a total lack of class and/or loyalty. Yup I should know by now that loyalty means naff all, for many if not all, these days in the world of football and maybe in the days of Bully we were spolit but I'd have more time and respect for the man if he'd have just said " I don't want to play in the championship and need to be playing at the highest level"

Still wouldn't be happy he was leaving but at least he will have said it as it really is.

Had Wolves stayed up doubt quite so many would suddenly want away?

It's all down to money. If they were on the same wages as in the PL I doubt they would have left so easily and quickly.

The big signing on fee will help soften Fletcher's sadness at leaving Wolves.

I agree it's all nonsense. Frankly one of the positives coming out of Kightly's departure is the disappearence of the guff he used to come out with endlessly in the press. No doubt he is still doing the same to a different audience who will lap it up for a bit and then realise that all he comes out with is the banal, steroetypical claptrap he thinks people want hear. In my opinion anyway.

I guess no one on here's ever left a company to further their own careers, but at the same time been sad to leave behind the friends that they made there.

"Former Wolves striker Steven Fletcher today admitted his disappointment at leaving Molineux after signing for Sunderland."

Why is he disappointed? He got what he wanted!!!

Token gesture. 'I was sad to leave' blah blah blah but he got what he wanted in the end and is now playing for his next 'stepping stone' club. I have no doubts that when another 'bigger' club comes sniffing around he'll get his agent to fire up the transfer request template again.

That said, let's move on from the Kightly, Fletcher, Jarvis debacle and support the new boys. Like someone else said it might be the making of us.

Gone are the days now when a player would spend at leat 5 years at a club and develop a bond with the area and the fans.

They are solely in it for themselves and the money.

    Disappointed? With what?

I think what Fletcher said is fair enough, and I don't see it as BS. Up until the transfer request, he seemed pretty happy at wolves, was popular with the fans and never created any stink despite being left out of the side for long periods in his first season.

Sad truth is he belongs in the Prem. He's far too good for the Championship and, with a short career, he was keen to play at the highest level. I know we all want players to show the same loyalty to Wolves that we do, but I think that's unrealistic.

He gave us good service, some great goals, a handsome profit to re-invest in new players and I wish him well.

Very good point. Just in that situation myself. Glad to move on but very sad to say good bye to some really important people. Both perspectives are compatible.

Thank God somebody has retained a bit of perspective. He didn't have to say anything but despite plenty of abuse and much mirth at his headgone comment he has chosen to publicly make it clear he enjoyed his time at Wolves. At least he left for a decent side and not West Ham or the Clayheads!

If we had stopped up, he'd have stayed. As would Jarvis and Kightly.

    It was that simple.

Gone are those days? Read Matt Jarvis' comments just posted on E&S:
    http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2012/08/29/dignified-jarvis-is-thankful-for-wolves-support/

I think that sometimes we have to appreciate that players have short careers and want to stay in the Premier League, if you read the "Secret Footballer" articles on the Guardian site they are quite enlightening as to how desperate players are to stay at the top level.

I think if Fletcher had not put #headsgone maybe fans would have respected his honesty rather than thinking he was such a muppet

Btw once you read the Secret Footballer you'll become obsessed trying to work out who it is, I'm 90% certain it's Dave Kitson

For the amount we received for both him and Jarvis, we'd have been mad not to sell, even if they wanted to stay. Fletcher went about it the wrong way though.

  23. if we could find 1 player a season who doubles in value, scores goals and is a good servant then we should be happy, fletch did well for us when he played, im sure hes dissappointed we couldnt attract players of similar quality whilst still in the premier league to enable him to stay and prosper and then have a bigger team than sunderland come in for him. as it is, weve got a decent price and are rebuilding using that money, if we could think differently and say that we've used him to get a better side then im sure we'd all be happier.

A lot of people seem to have lost sight of this.

Should we go back up, do the same people advocate we don't attempt to cherry pick from the relegated sides? We did it with Fletcher. We did it with Johnson. It's the way football works.

Fletch could have handled it better, but that's Twitter for you.

We failed as a club last season and you can't expect your best players these days to 'waste' a year or two or more trying to get back to the Premiership. It is a short career and at 25 Fletcher is at his peak in terms of getting a lucrative deal to guarantee his future.

The 'headsgone' comment was truly pathetic and yes perhaps he could have at least stayed with us for one season to see if we could get back. But the modern footballer knows nothing about loyalty and I guess if his salary was being halved the gap between what he would be getting at Sunderland and what he was getting from us was enormous.

I'm sure he enjoyed his time with us and that if we had stayed up he would have been happy to remain. But when he left things were loooking pretty shambolic and he might have thought that Wolves's return would be a long term project and time was not something he was prepared to gamble on. Plus his agent wanted his fee......

There are 89 selling clubs in this country and 3 buying ones.

IOn this context every player has his price and very little loyalty.

    Sad times.

The reason why he signed for us is the reason why he's now signed for Sunderland.

It's the nature of professional football these days. I'm surprised that so many are surprised.

As far as his comments are concerned - he's no longer a Wolves player, so I don't really care tbh.

When footballer's are asked questions by the media, I wonder what responses people are expecting sometimes. Who gives a $$$$? He's left one workplace for another and as said previously in this thread, left some friends behind.

I don't condemn him at all, as others have mentioned it's a short career and why should he stay in the championship when he can better himself by playing in the PL? And it isn't all about money as some say, yes he'll improve his pay packet but why would he want to play against the likes of Barnsley when there's Man.U, City, Chelsea, Arsenal etc to play against? I would do exactly the same as him were I lucky enough to have the option. OK, the #headsgone thing turned out not to be so clever but we all make mistakes and he may well regret posting that now. Good luck to him, Jarvo and Kightly, they all did their bit for us.

and meanwhile we use the transfer money to buy players who are moving to our club for more money.

The best we can hope for now is that our new bunch of mercenaries are better than the last lot.

Would he even have stayed if we'd stayed up?

I think people need to realise exactly where we are in the food chain & realise that players like Fletcher & Jarvis (maybe even Kightly) had outgrown us. Midtable to lower top 10 players whereas as we (currently) are lower end Premier League/top end Championship at best/ Yes these players should've been the ones to help us get to "the next level" but probably through no fault of their own we didn't make that progression so they've moved on to teams that are at that level (maybe not West Ham but time will tell)
