I appreciate it's a slightly difficult subject, but does he have a point or not in regards to his comments about his managerial career being held back because of his race?

When I was on soccer am Craig burley was one if the guests, he said john Barnes was the most clueless manager he had ever played under, and in sure it was said without prejudice

Putting myself up for what may be but I think it is a convenient excuse. He is not the first to use it either.

I hope not. But the is a increasing amount of Black Mangers. I'm more annoyed with how some players think they have the right to be a manager without proving them-self.

Has Barnes been working his $$$$$$$$ off with some kids in the youth teams?

I'd rather give a managers job to the former semi pro that has worked his way up the structure then a Ex star thinking he can walk into a job and has proved nothing off the field.

There is a fundamental and difficult question about why there are so few black managers.

There is a very easy question to answer in the specific case of John Barnes not being one of them.

You can't tell me intelligent players & leaders like Desailly, Seedorf to name a few haven't had the same opportunities as somebody like Solskjaer or Monk.

    It's rubbish.

The problem is that those black managers that have been given opportunities generally haven't taken them, Hughton's probably the notable exception in recent years and guess what he's been a manager every year since!

The number of black managers will increase as more of them succeed when given the opportunity.

I've always thought that if a manager, whatever colour or race he is, has a good record, he will get his chances. Playing the race card is a little ridiculous in this case.

Ray Wilkins said this morning'Sorry John we all want to work it isn't just you'
There maybe the odd dinosaur chairman out there but it is nothing like it used to be.He has to accept that the longer you are out the game you get forgotten-Black or White. If you want to work get off your rear end and do something else and don't expect a job to drop in your lap and then use the Race card when it doesn't .

The best one is where people pull out the stat that their is x% of black players yet only x% of black managers.

Yet again this is rubbish, what you actually find is that in terms of the population, it is black players are severely over represented as footballers not that they are under represented as managers.

Then of course you have the fact that there are only 92 managers, a minuscule population compared to that of players so drawing anything from that is fundamentally flawed, yet despite this it is a pretty accurate reflection of the country's population.

Statistically looking at it we have it all wrong.

If you also look at the % of black players that was playing 20/30 years its a lot lower.

if he feels there has been racist predjudice against him then he should name names and show what the problems are so problems can be dealt with, if he can't won't do that then you have to take his views with a pinch of salt

Shocking record where ever he's been, can't stand playing the race card i think it's pathetic, of course he's not the first or the last.
A number of black managers have had jobs over last season or 2 such as Hughton, Ince, Kiymona. Curle, Powell, Ramsey. So it's not like they aren't getting jobs

I thought this 'I didn't get the job/promotion etc etc because I'm black' bit had been consigned to history; obviously not. We live in a meritocracy - if you're good enough you'll get on.

Given the vast majority of managers are ex-players your point is a little simplistic. Many of the managers of today played at a time when the percentage of black players was much lower so that might partly explain the low number of managers. Over time the percentage will rise but twaddle like this from John Barnes won’t help.

He gave the greatest performance I've ever seen from a youth player against us - absolutely stupendous.
His goal against Brazil was one of the greatest England goals
    A wonderful player.

He is an appalling coach/manager. As much as I hate Tranmere, he started the rot there with his idiot friend Jason McAteer. He has nearly killed the club. Playing the race card is well out of order after what he did there.

Weren't they referred to as dumber and dumberer??

This actually really annoys me because unfortunately some people still do experience racial discrimination and every time someone (especially a well known figure) falsely plays the race card it undermines the complaints of those who have a genuine grievance.

Apparently his 'evidence' is 40 percent of black managers who do get a job dont get a second. However, this is actually a slightly better re-employment rate than the average.

He may not have a good managerial record but he's far from dumb (or stupid). He's a pundit on one of the Malaysian channels out here in SE Asia and speaks and presents articulately and intelligently.

This is an important and always completely overlooked. Most British fans look at the English and Scottish Leagues without any context to the rest of the world - the truth is there are few black head coaches in professional football worldwide.

Of the 16 participants in the recent Afrcian Cup of Nations, only 4 of them had a black manager. As these national associations have the greatest incentive to employ a coach from their own country - more so than any club side which just requires the most suitable applicant regardless of their background, then if they're more confident in white Europeans it's saying something about the overall level of quality. We can confidently disregard the spectre of racism from the list of reasons why Congo, Algeria, Mali, Gabon, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, Cape Verde, Tunisia and Burkina Faso amongst others, don't have a black coach.

Although mentioning Burkina Faso is an opportunity to mention their wonderfully (though potentially frighteningly) named Belgian coach - Paul Put.

If he was good enough he'd get a job. Same as Ince. You don't see Hughton moaning or Chris Powell for that matter, both decent managers in the championship.
It's a copy out playing the race card in 2015.

Disappointing from Barnes as the reason was purely the fact he was useless as a manager.

Admittedly there is a shortage of black managers in the game today but I believe there is a statistical reason for this; there are not that many black footballers that are old enough and that have all the required credentials.
If you look at a typical lower league manager of today, he is probably an ex player in at least his fifties and was therefore was a player in the 1970s or 1980s. This was still in the days when there were not that many black players in the game. Thankfully times have changed since and the number of black players in the game has dramatically soared; it is inevitable the number of black managers in the leagues will also soar in the very near future.
The next crop of managers will come from the retired players of the nineties and noughties. So long as they have acquired their relevant coaching badges and gained some experience they will be getting their opportunity regardless of colour.
Those that are qualified and talented enough will climb all the way to the top of the ladder.
John Barnes made it to the very top as a player; he would have done the same as a manager, if he was good enough.

They managed another 4 years in league one including two top half finishes after Barnes was there, bit extreme to claim he nearly killed the club after managing them for 12 games.

If anyone is to blame for their current plight surely it is Ronny Moore.
