Just wondering what everyone thinks the transfer policy should be from next week, from a business perspective ?
Without any accusations of assuming we're definitely going to get promoted (god forbid)....we're in an incredibly strong business position to bargain with the best young players who might be looking for a move.....moreso than teams at the foot of the Premier League who have got a terrific fight just to stay there and aren't attractive prospects long term.
I read that Pompey are probably going for Marvin Elliot from Bristol....well Pompey are 3 points off the drop zone with Tony Adams in charge? Who would bet on them definitely staying up now?
Are they a more attractive long term proposition than Wolves at this moment in time?

West Brom muddled around last season and wouldn't spend January money because Jeremy Peace said they were in too risky a league position for him to spend money....and he thought that some of the best players would see them as too much of a risk.
We're top of the league at Xmas by 7 points, we've done everything right so far. There's less risk for us of failure, less risk for a player to join us.

Do we press on and try to strengthen now with players who could have a long term future at a higher level with Wolves...but might cost less now than "if" we got promoted and tried to buy them in July as a Prem club?
Or do we think our squad is strong enough to see us through til May?

If we don't strengthen then we won't go up our current midfield is not good enough

CM priority, then if anything else decent is available at an OK price, go for it. But the only real necessity is the midfield.

Tend to agree. However the most likely candidates Surman, Watson and Elliott are all supposedly being chased by Prem league clubs. Even O'toole (who I think is too raw still to have an immediate impact) is supposedly interesting Newcastle. It will be tough to find better than we have got and I reckon the best hope is Davies coming back fit and firing. Another winger is also, as many agree top of the shopping list.

On today Centre midfield and a winger - but if its obvious to us then presumably it is to MM. Getting the right man isn't so easy though.

Agreed - we need 1 (maybe 2) CMs and a right winger to put pressure on MK and MJ (to a lesser extent)

I believe we need to secure Mancienne on loan for the rest of the season, similarly strive to get Carlos Edwards back on loan, and finally splash the cash on a top quality ball-playing central midfielder with vision. This would give us a squad with strength in depth-good cover in all positions.

Presumably why MM says he's interested in Scott Sinclair.

I think a left winger because Jarvis could easily switch over to the right as he is very 2 footed..

Judging on today's performance, we need a CM who can put his foot on the ball a bit more and add some muscle to the centre of the park. Something has certainly gone awry in the past few matches (at least, and regardless of results) and I think the problems stem from the CM area.

Against the top teams, the center of midfield has been shown to be pretty weak. We need 1 real quality central midfielder either on loan or permanent. Also, i`d like to see us bring in a new left winger. It may be harsh on jarvis, but he always leaves me just holding my breath waiting for his next injury. Having three good wingers would give us an enormous boost imo.

It probably goes against what we are all about now, but why not try to take thomas gravesen on loan until the end of the season and still sign another midfielder as well ? We would have nothing to lose by doing this. The only stumbling block could be his wages i suppose.

I am just worried at the pressure Blues and Reading are putting on us. I know we are still in the best position, but I would feel happier if they would start dropping points!

As for out transfer dealings, CM, left wing, and a small fast striker, and securing MM for the rest of these season. I think Sinclair on loan would cover the wing, and Mark Davies would give us something different in midfield, and I would look for smthing different up front. Sorry keogh does not do it for me, vokes will be a great player in a few years, but SEB has gone off the boil and we need something different. I am would take a punt on Jamie Ward or Simeon Jackson - both have bags of pace and could be a good foil for either vokes or big chris. It would force a different stle of play which will be usefull in the run in.

I'd see if Leeds are willing to part with Beckford, he has bags of pace.

Jamie Ward isn't a bad shout, still only a young player and has 13 goals this season already I believe. He's also from Birmingham so we may have an upper hand considering we're close to home.

I feel we need an experienced head in the midfield that can dictate the pace of the game and guide some of the youngsters when they get panicky, perhaps someone like stephen clemence. I'd rather a short term fix til the end of the season if we can't get a player that would be able to make the step up in the event of promotion.

I think the short term fix is the way to go thats why i suggested somebody like gravesen, although the problem with the older players is how much petrol they still have left in the tank. Saying that, if we could get in a real quality player who would be good for us in the prem then that would be a good idea too.

  16. 7 points clear in effectively a 3 horse race, Wolves must strengthen to kick on for promotion. As mentioned above, we must be a fairly good proposition for prospective players in our position.
I have faith in MM, this season he seems to have made all the right calls - even down to bringing on Mancienne when Wardy was getting roasted yesterday.

Hang on, it's going to be a bumpy ride!!

From Times vis BBC - anybody here worth looking at.............

Robert Green and Craig Bellamy could also leave West Ham in January, while squad players Luis Boa Morte, Calum Davenport, Nigel Quashie, Julien Faubert and Danny Gabbidon are also expendable. (The Times)

Carlos Edwards back on loan would be nice. I've never been convinced about Scott Sinclair.
Fryatt to me aint Premiership standard so don't see any point in buying someone of a similar standard to what we already have.
Gravesen is a great shout - one thin we do lack is real experience in the middle of the park. Henry is good, but against Quashie and Carsley he was 2nd best.

No to Matty Fryatt as he would cost at least £3m.

Lambert from Bristol Rovers would cost a fraction of what Fryatt would cost.

We have enough cover upfront, Unless the right player became available ie. Beckford, Mclean, Chopra, Nugent (Loan) i wouldnt waste money on another striker unless MM chooses to loan out Keogh to get his confidence back.

We could always stick Kightly upfront or get in a loan player if we get hit by injuries or suspensions.

Right now we need to buy to strengthen the team/squad. As teams struggle for promotion/play off places or against relegation, a lot of the players who are available or become available in the current transfer window will be over priced. Is our present squad good enough? I would say that with the addition of Mark Davis and Mark Little (I know he is out injured at the moment), yes. Obviously the final call is with Mick and he will make that call over the coming month.

I know results have still been ok recently but what is noticeable is the goals have started to dry up a tad lately. We have scored 8 goals in the last 6 games and what is significant is that goals from the front 2(Any two from SEB,CI,AK,SV) have virtually dried up from open play. Is this as a result of loss of form or the lack of creativity, strenghth or tactical awareness? I have maintained for a while that we definitely need another striker in January.Keogh will not score enough and whilst Vokes is definitely one for the future,it is wrong to expect him to be the lynchpin of the attack at this stage. In midfield Edwards has the legs but lacks ingenuity and that decisive pass, whereas with Jones it is vice versa. This January window is the most vital transfer period this club has had in years. I am sure Mick is aware of our shortcomings, and whilst not wanting to rock the boat and damage team morale,he needs to recruit those players which hopefully will guarantee promotion.

we don't need a centre midfielder, a winger (either sinclair or edwards) is all that i believe we need, alongside securing mancienne for the season

I agree totally with that, we do need to strengthen and I still maintain that we do need a bit more goal power - we need some real pace to give us something different to the power and ariel threat we have from SEB and big chris.

I don't care if we have to spend £1-2m of relatively dead money if we have to. Lets face it if you were Morgan and and had to spend a bit just to increase our chances you would do it because the rewards are potentially huge, event if its dead money or a gamble.

What is the issue with gambling £500-750k on Jamie Ward fore example - still only 22 and on 15 goals. If he fails you would get your money back more or less, it would just give you that something extra from the bench and his confidence is high.

I am convinced we will start to struggle for goals at some point, I can't beleive how blues and reading keep winning. I have this nightmare that we finish on 90 points and finish 3rd :(

We now need belt and braces,AK and SV will not score the requisite amount of goals if the front 2 get injured/suspended. We need another striker.

A decent CM if Mick has lost faith in Jones, a replacement for Keogh being as our brilliant fans have decided they don't like him, someone better than Jarvis and keep Mancienne for the season. That'll do me.
