The article is also on the official site and I thought exactly the same. Seems a strange comment to make.

I picked up on that one too! I'm surprised that Friend hasn't been loaned out for a month or so, with Gray and Edwards doing a decent job on the wing and Hill back to full fitness.

Friend has been impressing on the left wing in training.
On the Matt Hill...........the question asked could have just been about who would you play George or Ward. Matt Hill has also played his reserve games at centre half.

Sounds like we have the depth to fight for places.
Infact Shackell,Craddock and Collins are all up ther in the lists.

Interesting - I've heard the same thing.

I wonder if he may become Mick's next "secret weapon"?

If this secret weapon impresses me like our other secret weapon then we have nothing to worry about for the LW!

After Gray's performance against Birmingham last week (which wasn't great) perhaps Friend might get more of a chance in the coming games. I'd like to see him given a shot at it as Ward and him could be a very good left side pairing. Friend has obvious defensive skills that would mean that the two could overlap each other and fill in for the other very easily.

Plus you'd put your money on Friend's legs lasting longer than Gray's over the course of a game...

The biggest challenge here is risk as Friend doesn't have Championship experience and it could be argued we're in too good a position to take such a risk.

I think Hill will struggle to ever get a start for us, providing Ward stays fit. If we were to be promoted we might want more experience there but have Ward and Elokobi already, so he would be surplus to requirements. Friend has more time on his side.

Looking at the thread title I though oh dear what's he been getting up to, then it clicked :)

You haver to give youth its chance some time. If you don't you end up with a team of thirtysomethings. Let go of your fear. You don't need it, and it will only hold you back.

Without Jarvis, the left midfield position remains a problem. I don't rate Gray at all; he was the most ineffective player on the pitch during the Birmingham game. I would rather see Friend given an opportunity.

Spot on mate, I don't rate Grey at all, his legs have gone. And keogh just goes backwards, without Jarvis the weakness of our left side reduces our attacking options. Friend has taken some time to settle but I would give him a go.

  16. Despite Ward being brilliant at left back (never seriously thought i'd be saying that!) IF we were to go up, i can't imagine him marking the likes of Ronaldo, Wright Phillips et al out of the game for 90 minutes! Question is, would Elokobi? He's a great left back, very strong, quick and physical, but from what i've seen, his positional sense is sometimes erratic.

Although i'm all for moving players around and giving them a chance in other positions, if the requirement is there to do so, i'm not convinced with Hill and Friend - both whom were left backs when we signed them, and now they're looking at 5th choice centre back and 3rd choice left wing respectively. It's great to have strength and depth of course, but Hills confidence must be low having signed as a LB, got injured, been replaced with a centre forward, said centre forward converts well and Hill finds himself playing reserve football at centre back...

While I see your point, consolidation for us won’t be won against Manchester United et al. The bottom ten is what we need to get 10 wins out of, and then scrape points elsewhere. So, from what we’ve seen of Ward at full back, could he ‘do a job’ against the likes of Valero, Emerton, Simon Davies, Aliadiere, Diouf, Behrami etc? I think he could.

MM picked Friend v Sheff Utd over Hill. At present can't see where this guy will get a game.
Question for the stattos - have any other players come to Wolves and moved on without playing?

I'm sure Roberts didn't play in the league before he was shipped out?

Edit: and I totally agree - it's hard to see how Hill's going to get a game without further injuries to playing staff.

I'm sure we've had a few. Did Serge Romanov or Garcia St Juan ever actually play? (I'm dealving into the deepest recesses of my mind for some of these). Did we have someone called Kurcic too?

The goalkeeper Zalko Kalac - the one we allegedly signed from Leicester before he moved on to AC Milan!! Never even came to the ground apparently

Both Romanov and Jesus Sanjuan played - not often, certainly not much more than Mark Lazerous (one for the oldies!)

Romano played four league games, Sanjuan played seven (and scored at Fulham in the League Cup).

Steeve Epesse-Titi was one we signed who never played.

    Apology accepted!

Hassan Kachloul never started a game for us, Sami Al-Jaber never started a league game, Jacob Laursen never played at all. They were all loans though.

We've had loads of loan keepers who've never played; Mautone, Harrison, Nielsen, Bywater, Petterson, Feuer, Beresford, etc etc.

Cavan chapman only played once but it was more than enough to realise how terrible he was. Did david felgate make a first team appearance?

Certainly never played in the league. Chuck him on the pile of unused keepers.

Mark Turner played one game, now that was even more nepotistic than the Chapmans, at least then we were properly desperate for players.

Bloody hell, the knowledge out there is amazing! So as it stands apart from loans and gks it may be that if Hill never starts he may be the 1st British outfield player to gain this distinction?!

Just thought of another one who definitely never played - Richard Flash.

Jason Roberts is British really, even though he's played internationally for Grenada.

Also Matt and Chris Clarke, the twins we signed as trainees, never played for us.

Well, other than Jason Roberts for a start.

There's loads of former trainees that we signed on professional terms who never played for the first team.

If we exclude trainees, loans and keepers on non-contract terms, I think we've got Epesse-Titi, Flash and Roberts so far. Don't think there are many more.

I reckon Hill will get some football with us, there's still a way to go this season.

Exactly, assuming Ward is injured for at least two games this year who would most ppl start at left back if both fit? I myself would start Hill.

I suspect that Hill would start as LB over Friend. In the midfield role it seems MM prefers Friends (assumed) better technique and pace. At LB Friends lack of experience would be shown up far more than in midfield.
