38 years ago today Gary played the game of his life.Oh the memories.
Gary Pierce 61? Crap, I'm old.
What a hero . . probably the best day of my Wolves supporting life. They were such a great team and it had looked unlikely that they would ever get their just rewards by winning a major trophy. . . . When i now think about that day apart from Gary's amazing display , i think in particular of Mike Bailey. If ever there was a man who was a born leader, a natural Captain, who led by example, it was Mike. Mike Bailey was born to lift trophies at Wembley. . . and it was so 'right' to see him in the Royal Box that day . . . lifting that trophy and in his own lovely description . . . "turning around and seeing 'The Old Gold' and showing it to them!"
I was there. What a game he played!
A great character and he was great company.
Saves from Colin Bell, Francis Lee, Rodney Marsh were all top drawer.
Happy birthday Gary.
A day I'll never forget.
I remember it well I was 13 great day ! He used to see the landladys daughter of the silver birch pub in parkfields !
Remember going to a London Wolves do a few years back with leedswolf & meeting GP. Spent quite a while with him chatting about the good days, thoroughly decent chap although he was a little (how shall I put it?) well oiled
I recall the dour, unsmiling Bill McGarry suddenly getting out of character and running onto the pitch at the end of the match to hug Gary who had been a rock in our defence.
I also remember my all-time favourite player, the geat Kenny Hibbitt, bringing the cup to show off to the disabled wheel-chair Wolves fans ....what a gent !!!
I still have the original recorded LP of the match somewhere in my attic !!!
Same age as me! Great win that against a team full of so called superstars!
Happy Birthday, Gary.
Your wonder saves against City will never be forgotton - and 38 years down the line proves it!
Super team under Bill McGarry
Happy Birthday Gary
I wonder if Rodney Marsh sent him a birthday card
Very fond memories of 74.
Happy Birthday Gary
(and Bill McGarry would send another hug too, if he could)
Cant believe he was only 23 on that wonderful day,
I had a drink with Gary in the 70s very nice guy. Happy 61st Gary
'Then we walk out through the tunnel and right facing us was the black and gold of the Wolves supporters... and the noise that they generated- the confidence they gave you, you couldn't wait to get the game started' Kenny Hibbitt on the 74 final.
Great display from Pierce on a great day and time to be following the club.
Happy days and Happy Birthday Gary
I can remember a report a few years ago saying how Gary had fallen on very hard times. Does anyone know how he is these days?
Happy Birthday Gary it is a day I will never forget as a 14 year old going to Wembley to watch us lift the cup. I can still see the match in my mind as if I was still there.
Still the happiest day I've ever had following the Wolves. Wept like a babby when Richards scored.
I used to run Wolves Social FC in the Sunday League and Gary used to help with training the lads.
I remember him watching one day and the ball went over a metal railing fence, the type with spikes on top. Quick as a flash he climbed over, got the ball back and climbed back over again. I gave him a roasting about the chance he'd just taken and he just laughed.
A few weeks later he played for the first team in the league.
A smashing bloke. Very down-to-earth, and liked a pint.
Happy 61st Gary.
A great day, remember as one of the best days watching Wolves.
Gary was superb as was all the team and the fans.
Happy birthday Gary ( my 61st this year ) old but still proud to be a Wolves fan.
