I didn't know where to post this especially as the original thread was closed but the Guardian has this evening issued an official apology for calling Sir Jack a racist and comparing him to Hitler. Those comments have now been removed from the podcast and they have apologised for any hurt they have caused.
I don't know how to cut and paste it but I am sure someone will.
I apologise if this has been highlighted elsewhere.

Good. One of the plus points about the guardian is they tend to let their journalists have a bit more freedom in what they write and say (rather than being forced to fit their stories to a sub-editor's agenda).

Unfortunately this means that occasionally when their journalists say something $$$$ing stupid it isn't picked up and stopped immediately. (This particular one is notorious for being disrespectful - last week he said Bournemouth would be the worst, least fashionable club to play in the top flight if they get promoted because... he's never watched them).

Having said that, disappointed that the journo wasn't challenged by the others at the time and also that the section wasn't removed from the original podcast - most ppl will have listened to it already now and won't see the apology (as proven above). Hopefully the next podcast will apologise for their remarks, even if it will mean Wolves being talked about 3 times in a row!

There are no plus points about the Guardian. Its just a rag written by champagne socialists and trendy lefties for teachers and those working in the public sector. I shall boycott it. Oh, I already do!

Please tell me what newspaper covers football better in terms of full match reports and in-depth features.

I'm sure Mr Glendenning will be apologising/explaining his comments on tomorrow's Football Weekly.

If you have a shred of respect for Sir Jack and his memory then boycott it.

Don't buy it or read it online.

The club should ban their journalists for the rest of the season.

Absolutely. The original post is just the usual set of ignorant cliches. Though he did omit 'tree-hugging'.

I noticed it disappeared also. I didn't think it was in bad taste though people were arguing there political viewpoints and many were expressing in particularly strong terms how reprehensible they found the piece. I would have thought they had every right to.
On the apology and I am one of those that defended the paper the other day, it is right and proper that they should apologise to his immediate family. The piece though was incredibly insensitive and they insulted an awful lot more people by ever allowing it to be broadcast.
In truth it seems to be the very least they could do but then journalists by and large - are they any better than used car salesmen? Sorry I didn't mean to insult used car salesmen, let me re-phrase our common perception of used car salesmen.

He's only apologised because he's been made to look stupid. Doesn't mean he's changed his opinion of the great man.

I had a bit of a conversation with the guy on Twitter and to be fair he seemed a decent guy. He was right to apologise and I'm glad he has.

Some of the abuse he got on Twitter was unacceptable. Not sure why people think they can abuse on social media.

Makes no difference that they've been forced into backing down, they wouldn't have dreamed of apologising if they hadn't had to.

    Still a **** paper.

Because like on here at times, they are keyboard warriors who wouldn't dare say most of what they type in a face to face situation.

The fact he (Guardian) has apologised doesn't make the original article disappear though, it was still published & besmirched Sir Jack's name. No amount of apologies can change that

It's not just social media, you get it at work too. Someone drops you an e-mail full of aggression, you pick the phone up and speak to them and their attitude is completely different.

I think we are all guilty of it to an extent, it's just take it further than others.

Definition of keyboard warrior: someone who regularly posts well-argued stuff that challenges other people's preconceptions.

I actually like the Guardian and many more papers, I feel mature enough to read between the lines. All newspapers can and will for a variety of reasons print stories that are scurrilous, inflammatory or simply untrue from all sides of the political divide. We have relative freedom of press and it is good when a paper prints an apology and the Guardian was right to do so in this case.

this exactly he feared might be losing his cushy number if he didn't start back pedalling quickly

seemed like a $$$$$$$$ to me, even when back pedalling on the Sir Jack stuff he couldn't help mocking the Wolverhampton/Black Country accent.

I've never bought the Guardian anyway but wouldn't now.
