RIP Gordon Banks. He made my favourite save at my favourite World Cup. Condolences to your friends and family.
Mortality. The artist's only true enemy. But his legend lives on wherever he is still remembered and revered. Noone outlasts the final act, but the script remains forever.
In his time he was nothing less than the greatest goal keeper in the world. Few will ever be that great again. R.I.P.
A name that will be forever associated with being an unbelievable goalkeeper...growing up playing footy with mates, turning up with my first goalkeeper gloves from Siviter Sports only for them to say "who do you think you are, bloody Gordon Banks??!!" RIP
While I, like all of us marvel at his incredible save v Brazil for me it was his remarkable positional sense that made him the great keeper he was. Also Gordon was just under 5ft 11 which in the modern era of " basketball players " between the posts seems tiny which makes his goalkeeping skills all the more outstanding. When I was youngster back in the seventies in the days of " jumpers for goalposts " park games my best Mate Andy idolised Gordon Banks so much so that he had a replica blue jersey and white shorts that Gordon wore in the Mexico World Cup. We spent hours trying to replicate the save from Pele. Also the penalty save from Geoff Hurst in the League Cup Semi Final for Stoke was another we tried to do ! Over used word in the modern world but today we truly have lost a " LEGEND "
'His gravity-defying denial of the Brazil great Pelé’s lunging header at Mexico 1970 became known as the save of the century... “As I got to my feet,” Banks later recalled, “Pelé came up to me and patted me on the back. ‘I thought that was a goal,’ he said. ‘You and me both,’ I replied. The TV footage of the game shows me laughing as I turn to take up my position for the corner. I was laughing at what Bobby Moore had just said to me. ‘You’re getting too old Banksy, you used to hold on to them.’ Like hell I did.” from The Guardian. RIP, another great of the game departed
This says it all for me, for that is what he was!! Many may not have heard that Derek Dougan suggested to Bill McGarry that the Wolves sign Gordon back then and with the greatest of respect to Lofty, what a difference Banksy and perhaps Colin Todd would have made to that very good side, surely a title winning line up!! RIP Gordon... we’ll always have Wembley 66 and Mexico 70!!
Yes I was lucky enough to see him play for Stoke and Leicester against the Wolves and that save against Pele ! RIP Gordon.
RIP - One of the games most legendary players. Fantastic keeper & a great guy off the field. Thoughts & prayers are with his family.
Remember seeing him at Molineux in his first season after being transferred from Chesterfield to Leicester, 1959-60. We played them just before Christmas and they whopped us 3-0. You could see he was a good 'un even at that early stage.
I was privileged to see this legend play for Stoke and Leicester what a great goalkeeper he was when England was blessed with some very good goalkeepers but he was the best of the lot by a mile, he always came across as a true gentleman, RIP Banksy
