Well after somberly tying an old 2003 play off final scarf around BW's feet it turned out to be a great game, really enjoyed it from the second half onwards when we go going after being outplayed for all of the first half. Iorfa man of the match with Stearman good again & a big tip of the hat to La Parra & Edwards.

McAlinden is finished & needs to move on I don't care where or for how long & we played a strange sort of narrow shape second half & this showed up our need for another quality centre midfielder imo. Someone who can tackle & move with the ball in space but I doubt we will finds one in January. Have to hope Saville can step up.

I was and harsh as it may be I'm also of the mind that even accounting for his age he needs to be showing more than he is.

He just doesn't seem to offer enough I'm afraid. As much as I'd genuinely love him to prove me wrong, I think he needs to be moved on to make way for better players to come in.

I agree with Mr Wolf, we should probably get rid of McAlinden. I really don't think he'll have a future playing high level football.

I've probably watched every game the boy wonder from Cannock has played. He was more of a disadvantage last night. Making things much harder for other players.
Him and Cassidy have had a lot of chances and yet to perform when given. A few people I know have watched him in the u21s a couple of times and have said every time that he was one of the worst player there.
Not very encouraging when he was tipped to be the next Steve Bull.
How long can we keep dragging on youngsters because they showed some sort of potential in the past.

Having looked at the highlights, that's a really poor mistake from Evans.

Fantastic run from Iorfa & Batth for Edwards goals & a great pass from McDonald for La Parra's goal. Fantastic penalty from Edwards too.

Looked as though Fulhams 2nd might have been offside but really hard to tell.

There is no way that is offside. The commentators on WP seemed sure it was. Well, it wasn't.

Also agree about the penalty decision which they though was shocking refereeing.

Maybe they should use the next few days to untint their old gold glasses just a bit.

Thought it looked offside initially, but looking again the player on the floor (not sure who) is playing him on.

. Another young player wrote off at 20 years old, so based on the short amount of time he has had on the the first team pitch in the passed to seasons you have disided that's enough to write a you acadeamy graduate off?????. I have seen him loads of times as a youth and u21s and totally disagree and as for first team as far as I am aware he had been given little time and chance and the chances he has had have been mostly at the end of a lost cause ( other than the two cup games where one of which he was very good). Cass also had been wrote off a bit to soon although he had more experience and had more chances than macca his is still very young . its mad.

What's with all the dickish celebrations from the Fulham players towards the South Bank when they scored their penalties?

We can't keep loaning these young lads out forever, either they're good enough or they're not. McAlinden doesn't look good enough to me, very lightweight and weak

McAlinden and Cassidy could both be sold, think they will be become good league 1 strikers in the future but nothing more.

Don't know about could be they should.

For me McAlinden is a better player than Cassidy but with the signing of Afobe, the return of Doyle and fact Clarke, sadly, still gets on the bench I just don't see when he will get much chance now.

    A sad farewell to Jack

What an advert for football. Two team putting out good teams and giving it a go even when the snow came down. Plenty of skill shown by both sides.

First half Fulham played the better football, tighter passing better control and deserved their lead.

Second half, the pace od Dicko and Daves running changed the game in our favour............until the final minute

Extra time, both teams going for it, great entertainment and heartbreak

    Scores

Ikeme 7 Solid handling from the big man kept us in first half

Iorfa 9 absolute gem, probably MOTM, get running and driving into their box to create a goal and solid defending

Batth 7 i gave him an extra mark for his driving run to create a goal, in defense he was hard pushed by skilful forwards keeping it on the deck

Stears 7 another given a hard time by mobile forwards but both he and Batth played their part

Doc 6 Rusty is the word that comes to mind. Made very few rampaging runs like he used to

Price 6 outmuscled in the first half, better with Dave infront of him in the second

KMac 6 another that was out thought in the first by Scotty Parker, conditions didn't help him

MacAlindon 5 Poor game, he will be as disappointed with that performance as I was

Evans 5 not a good night for him. Lost a lot of balls first half, gave the ball away in final minute that lead to the free kick. Then gave a needless penalty in the dying seconds

RVP 6 not in it first half, lost countless balls but was in the right place to take a vital goal. Better once Dicko and Dave was on.

    Subs

Dicko 8 made a difference as soon as he came on. Tempo was upped, the ball stuck and we started to control match

Edwards 9 made all the difference his movement and winning second balls undid Fulham. Great he got on the scoresheet

Jackett good solid timely substitutions. Took the Cup seriously, thank you!

    Ref.......arrrrgggghhhh he was fine

Crowd....good noise from the South Bank

I was watching the ref at the end with Batth & Batth was showing him (take your hand put it on your opposite shoulder with your elbow covering your mouth) but the ref was saying he raised it higher above his face.

Although I would rather he let it smash him in the face (easy for me to say), and in the circumstances he didn't cover himself in glory, he clearly didn't raise his arm above his face and it hit his elbow in front of his head.

You are right and in a better position than anyone else here to judge him. He desperately needs a run of games with a decent outfit in Div 1 and then I think he will begin to bloom. I think it is a pity he was recalled when he was getting into his stride earlier in the season. Very poor that we had so few forward options and it has worked to McAlinden's disadvantage. Once he has had a full season with a team like MK Dons then judge him and take a decision. At 20 he still has enormous potential and the impatience and stupidity of supporters should be ignored. If it doesn't work out then so be it but let's give him a year in Div 1 before we come to final conclusions. Akobe had done very little in terms of goalscoring before this season and he is 22 in February.

Definite penalty for me. He raised his arm to it to be honest.

Ref got it right after watching it on the highlights.

Looking at the highlights, he didn't even hit that free kick hard. I know it was cold and all, but it was a disappointing penalty to give away. I still think it is harsh to write him off as finished after that though. He's a young lad and young lads make mistakes. Be it on the football pitch or with women and money. Or all three.

I think McAlinden is the one being written off (harsh and I'll always give the kids the benefit of the doubt, but clearly needs a good loan spell at least).

Evans is the one who stopped the ball for the penalty, I think many of us still have high hopes for him after a very promising run earlier in the season. I would happily have him straight in whenever McDonald is not available.

I think I am getting my threads mixed up, in the Fulham Comms thread there is a lot of anger directed at him. He was written off in that one by quite a few people.

    Hi Edgo

Agree with most of your comments but disagree with the comment regarding "good timely substitutions made by Jackett". With just 2 minutes left he took off Dicko who was not happy by the look of his body language when leaving the pitch but who would'nt be as he only came on as a sub at half time, much more importantly only a few seconds after Ckarke came on and the ball was played forward towards the corner flag in between the south bank and Steve bull stand which the defender got to before Clarke and Fulham broke and eventually got the free kick and penalty, I remember saying to myself at the time had Dicko been on the pitch would he have got to the ball before the defender, kept possession and us seeing the game out, that know of us will ever know, but we do know what happened and maybe as a result of making a needless change with just two minutes left

Oh I see, well without wishing to upset anyone on here who write him off I think sitting at home reading a comms thread may not be the best way to judge a player's potential. He did well last night after the shambolic first half efforts where we were very poor as a team.

It's hard to write a full verdict a whole day on, I'll do my best though. I thought it was a very entertaining game, perhaps made so entertaining by both sides being at times a little sloppy, and at other times far too open. Of course, the atmosphere was sombre and tinged with great sadness, particularly before the game. I'm sure Sir Jack would have been watching on, and would have been proud of the team, who aside from a pretty rotten first 45 minutes gave it a right good go, and but for a couple of key mistakes could have been looking forward to a trip to Sunderland in a couple of weeks time.

The first half was really poor from Wolves. We lacked urgency, tempo, and width. There was flickers of creativity, but nothing to really carve open the Fulham defence. The midfield area was very crowded at times, and that wasn't condusive to the counter attacking, pacey play which served us so well at Blackburn just 48 hours earlier. Too often a pass was played into Fulham foot or head, or aimlessly hoping for a run which never came. Fulham scored a good goal and carved out some decent openings, but still to me look like a collection of individuals, rather than a cohesive team unit. They have some very good players, but I get the feeling that there are plenty of sides in this division more likely to challenge for the Play-Offs.

Second half was a complete turnaround. The introduction of Dicko and Edwards for the ineffectual McAlinden and the tired Henry seemed to give the team a real boost. Suddenly there was purpose to our play, and we could move the ball forward with confidence. We hit the woodwork twice, before turning the scoreline on its head with two quick, well taken goals from Edwards and Van La Parra. We surrendered the lead quite soon after though, a scrappy ball across the box was turned in by Woodrow for his second goal. Haven't seen any replays but looked a good yard offside from the North Bank, even Woodrow seemed surprised to turn around and not see a flag. So, to extra time we went.

I think the snow reduced the quality of the football, but multiplied the entertainment factor no end. Suddenly it had the school playground feel to it, with people chasing balls which would have been lost causes, knowing the ball may well stick in the pitch. I felt we coped far better with the conditions than Fulham, I don't recall them having an effort from open play in the extra time, whereas we forced a couple of good saves from the keeper, as well as taking the lead. By this point the snow was terrible, so I genuinely can't describe our third goal, I'm told it was Edwards who scored from a Batth cross. The roar from the South Bank was the only way I knew we'd scored.

It all looked very rosy, when Fulham got a free kick on the edge of the box. I'm sure when highlights are posted, it will show McCormack's free kick, but I hope they also show the "foul" in the build up. It was a dive. There was no snow by this point so I had a perfect view. He dived, and the referee bought it. McCormack hit the free kick, it hit the wall and bounced away. Everybody carried on, except McCormack who appealed, and the referee decided to give a penalty. Very strange decision. Obviously in the North Bank we were behind the wall, but I didn't seen anybody move their hands towards the ball, or extend their body. It may have hit the hand, but it was still a very harsh decision. I thought the referee was pretty lousy all game though to be honest. He was very rarely up with play, used the advantage clause poorly and gave some pretty poor decisions. On one occasions, the Fulham left back Staflidis was being hassled by Iorfa, who was looking to nip in and cross the ball. Staflidis dropped himself on top of the ball and was given a free kick. Ridiculous.

You can't argue with Fulham's penalties, scoring 5 out of 5 is decent going, and unfortunately Doherty's shuffling, shunty run up was only going to end up one way.

So, we bow out, to "concentrate on the League", perhaps. In the end it may well be a good thing, who knows. There was probably only one thing on everybody's minds coming out of the game though. RIP Sir Jack.

    Ratings:

Ikeme- 7. Beaten three times, but made one good early save and his handling was excellent on a very tricky evening.

Iorfa- 8. Continued to build on his burgeoning reputation. Seemed to be getting the bird from the Fulham fans all evening, no idea why. Didn't affect him though. Great work for the first goal, and was unlucky right at the start of extra time when a chance created by his own industry just didn't go in.

Batth- 7. Solid as ever, did struggle with some of Fulham's movement first half, but as we gained control he played well, and even brought the ball out of defence at times.

Stearman- 7. As with Batth, grew into the game, and made one 60 yard run and cross which was begging to be turned in at the far post.

Doherty- 5. Didn't have a bad game necessarily, but I think any notions of him being a regular left back should be left as that, just notions. He's a good right back, potentially a very good right back, but he doesn't really have a left foot, and at times his desire to come onto his stronger foot slowed things down, or stopped them completely. Loses a mark for an awful penalty too.

Price- 8. Thought aside from a couple of dodgy touches, he did really well. Seemed to be a little swamped first half, but recovered well enough to help dictate things from then onwards.

McDonald- 7. Lost quite a few 50-50s, which is unlike him, got forward well at times and as the game went on, became a more prominent figure.

Henry- 6. Looked knackered, quite simply. He put in a monumental effort on Sunday though, so you can forgive him.

Evans- 5. Played more advanced, but it didn't really work. It reduced his capacity to play those super 40 yard crossfield passes, and he doesn't really have the trickery to beat players on the edge of the box. Also gave the ball away right at the end trying to be clever, which led to the free kick, penalty, etc.

Van La Parra- 8. Another one who I thought did pretty well, took his goal well and as the game opened up, seemed to relish the extra space.

McAlinden- 5. On this showing alone he's not ready for a first team place. Dare I say it, he might not be good enough. Put one decent cross in, but for most of the time he was on the pitch, was too slow to anticipate any passes, and when he did have the ball, he was knocked off it far too easily.

    Subs:

Dicko- 8. A real livewire when he came on, buzzed around the edge of the Fulham box, and hit the bar for the second game running. His introduction helped change the game.

Edwards- 8- MotM. Two goals, plus one in the shoot out. Offered us everything we lacked in the first half, namely creativity, movement, and energy.

Clarke- Came on, gave the ball away, then scored in the shootout.

For the benefit of those who were not at the game, I can catagorically say that Iorfa was absolutely NOT man of the match.

As much as I see he has potential, he is still very raw, and probably more suited to playing at centre back.

He did well for the goal but could have got forward so much more if he was more switched on.

It was harsh, but the Fulham fans in the John Ireland were laughing at him most of the game, just waiting for him to trip over the ball or his own feet. I'm sure there is someone who can back me up?

There were times when he'd sprint forward with intent, only to then do a u-turn with noone near him. Reminded me a bit of Mo Camara!

Sorry to be harsh, but I just want people who weren't there to get an acurate, unblinded review.

I'm sure he'll prove to be a great player over time.

You might find someone to back you up Robert, but not me. He does get the ball stuck under his feet at times, and he can be a bit raw, but no way would I move him to CB, his pace is his greatest asset and that is best used at FB.

Yeah, like I say he did give the ball away a couple of times, but I thought his energy and work rate were fantastic, I just wish when the ball gets to him at the edge of the box, he'd try a shot one of these days!
