I see McCarthy has signed Freddie Sears from Colchester. He could be an excellent buy as he was very highly rated at West Ham as a youngster and has been scoring for fun for Colchester who have hardly been setting the world on fire. Maybe one that got away?

Hope it works out better for him than the last striker he signed called Freddie

He was highly regarded at West Ham, at the age of 18. Didn't really develop, but has scored goals at lower levels for a couple of seasons now (bit like Leon!). A gamble worth taking, I would have thought, as he may come good again.

He will do well there, in my opinion.
    Good signing for them.

He can play out wide cant he? I think he would be a good option off the bench with his pace.

At one stage he was the next big thing but hasn't achieved that potential, still scoring quite a few goals at Colchester though.

I don't. Love Mick but obviously want to finish in the play offs (or higher) and Ipswich will be a rival for that.

I don't mean to sound rude, but why even make this thread after he's signed for Mick? We were never in for him.

Its because some people live in the past and cant get over the fact Mick isn't our manager, so they need to monitor everything he does and remark on it.

He's a player signed by a rival. That makes it relevant.

A typical 'short term thinking' McCarthy/Connor type signing.

    Much happier with Afobe.

Was bigged up quite a bit when he first came through but never lived up to it but has had a few decent (nothing amazing though) seasons at Colchester. At 25 I suppose this is probably his last shot at living up to the earlier hype.

Mick and his scouts have a good record at signing lower league players for a small price, so it's probably a decent gamble for them.

Despite his England youth pedigree. Despite him only being 25 and in great form.

    Definitely short term. ;)

Probably a decent signing by Mick and what NWW says about him being signed by a rival is relevant. No evidence however that we were ever interested in him and while I wish Mick, Ipswich and Sears well, we are Wolves supporters and it is our signings which are most relevant and deserve our support. UTW.

Maybe we should have a separate thread for the latest transfer news from our rivals where we can mention any signings like this

Sometimes a rival will sign a player and a big jealous/angry light bulb will flash above my head. This signing makes me happy I'm sitting in the dark. I know Mick hasn't got a lot in the way of finances at Ipswich but Sears is quite underwhelming.

Enjoy the darkness, Timberwolf. He can hardly be described as one that got away when we were not interested in the first place.

For some reason the Ipswich match was broadcast on TV here in Bulgaria on Saturday. Sears seemed quite good after he came on and laid on the third goal. Could be a reasonable signing.

Surely the best thing would be a sub-forum entitled 'We love Mick' which the people who simply cannot let go would be able to post on everyday.

Instead of having the regular McCarthy 'love in' threads they could all be put on special sub-forum so his many fans could pay regular homage to him.

An intelligent punt by Mick. Sears is clearly a talent but something has been holding him back until now, whether it is fragile confidence or physical strength or a bit of both I'm not sure but his work rate and desire makes him a typical Mick player.

Taking him to East Anglia which is close enough to Essex to get back around friends and family is a good move. He didn't succeed in the midlands last time around and I couldn't see him working out if we had been interested, whereas at Ipswich he is well worth a punt.

Just for once, why can't there just be a discussion of the subject i.e. the merits of a rival's signing (ideally on the existing thread for for that very purpose) instead of descending into the usual bickering and point scoring because it involves Mick?

As it goes, given Ipswich's budget, he looks worth a punt. They obviously don't have the funds for a big name signing and you're unlikely to get many potentially decent Championship strikers on the cheap. It certainly can't hurt their prospects to add to their squad at this stage to try and cover for injuries/loss of form.

Sears was a promising youngster who apparently had talent but appeared to have lost his way a little - for a good while he had more career clubs than goals. Now he's hit a bit of scoring form at a league 1 level, it's a question of whether he's grown up and developed and is living up to his early promise or if he's just hit a hot streak.

Having said that, I'm more than happy that we got Afobe instead!
