Watching Englands game tonight is Delph Englands Karl Henry, not overly quick, does a nice turning circle when he gets the ball, and rarely passes the ball forward. I honestly cannot see what he brings to the England team, if he is the best we have the heaven help us.

Plays quite well obviously for villa to earn the call up but tonight he hd looked very very ordinary ( occasion perhaps got the better of him. )

Now Phil Jones......... What a pile of turd!

Long term we've got Ward-prowse, Jack Price and Wilshere if he can sort his injury problems out.

Very harsh on Delph imo. A few stray balls but he did ok. The fresh legs that came on changed the game though.
Karl Henry would have a nose bleed if he went as far forward as Delph! They play in different positions but they do look alike!

Delph played well in an unfamiliar left midfield role, he took the ball forward plenty & a few poor passes aside played well when on the ball.

Why when we had 3 CM's on the bench Jones played I don't know but Jones & Smalling are good enough centre backs. Kyle Walker on the other hand....

Delph is a slightly better version of David Davis, Smalling needs to detach the caravan he's towing and Phil Jones simply isn't good enough. These young cloggers are the future of English football apparently.

I don't want to see Jones in midfield again, i feel sorry for him having to play there he obviously isn't comfortable or anywhere near good enough to play that role.
Carrick i can't believe he hasn't played more for England, best passer we have by a mile.
I appreciate it was a friendly and maybe we wanted to test it but i don't want to see Walcott in the number 10 role either, no need for it, either play him wide or not at all.

That's the point though mate. Why play him in an unfamiliar role at International level when he doesn't play there for his club?We have other options for that position in my view.

Because Hodgson doesn't have a clue, Jones & Smalling get ushered in all over the place because they do have ability. At Premiership level against poorer teams you can get away with it but at that level it's not good enough to do. It's like us using Iorfa as a DM then slagging him off when he's not Pirlo.

Leave them at centre half Roy you have the whole of England to pick midfielders & full backs from.

Woy said it was an experiment with Jones that he wanted to try for when we need to shore up things in a game against better opposition. He also said he wouldn't play him there again unless such a time happened. He also said we were crap first half and we didn't play as well as his higher standards required.

To be fair to Hodgson I thought he gave a good frank and honest interview. Much prefer him to Schteve and Fabio as well.

If we're going to go with three central midfielders (which a lot of international teams are heading towards atm) it does make sense for at least one of them to be left footed and can you think of one that is better than Delph who's English and fit?

Him and Henderson were much the same - if the left and right central midfielders are players whose biggest strength is their stamina then the one in between needs to be an expert at short/long forward passing which Jones definitely isn't and Carrick probably is.

A good player for a lower end Premiership side.
An average at best England International who's place should be on the bench.

Carrick is a good defensive midfielder.

He has however become overrated in England because of his lack of use.

Playing Jones ahead of him is laughable, but for me Barkley was the turning point in the game.

Delph is getting a lot of $$$$ when Henderson is twice as bad, how is he even a professional footballer. Play Oxlade-Chamberlain centre mid over him all day long.

Barkley can't be trusted to start. Gives the ball away in very stupid areas which can put us chasing the ball and firmly on the back foot. Very much an impact player for me, for when we need to gamble against a team looking to shut up shop.

Yes but players like the Ox, Walcott, Sturridge and Wilshire, good as they might be, are never going to be constantly fit enough for any manager to build a team around.

I think Barkley has all the attributes to be top-class so I'd have him starting sooner rather than later to gain international experience. I'd play a 4-3-3 with one holding midfielder (Wilshere if fit given his age, Carrick if not) and the same front three that played so well against Scotland away (AOC, Rooney and Welbeck). For the same reason, I would probably choose Shaw over Baines.

The big problem position is centre-half. I'd probably just go for Smalling at the moment (not an April Fool honestly!) although I think Eric Dier at Spurs could be really good if they consistently play him at centre-half and not right-back.

Sterling, Sturridge and Kane as options off the bench.

    Hart
    Clyne, Cahill, Smalling, Shaw
    Milner, Wilshere/Carrick, Barkley
    AOC, Rooney, Welbeck

Barkley is potentially a very good player but his end product, for both Everton and England has always been absolutely woeful. He has the speed and strength to terrify defenders when he runs at them but almost always ends up giving the ball away. Personally I wouldn't have him near the England team until he is a more rounded player at club level.

I have never really been a fan, but I know what you mean, although having said that, he doesn't have the pace to play any further forward.

I know it's not easy making a proper assessment of players if only watching the match on TV, but I did think during the game that if Delph had been a Wolves player I would have been quite proud of his performance.

That is an awful team, no way you could trust Barkley to do a job on the left hand side.

    ..........Henderson........Carrick

    Sterling..............................Walcott (Welbeck)

    ......................Rooney

    .....................Sturridge

    Disagree on excellent.

Good or even very good, but I used to cringe when a year or two ago people would say he is better or as good as Busquets.

He has been under-used in recent years, no doubt, I could understand Sven picking Gerrard-Lampard because at the time they were genuinely top class but since it was clear that didn't work, Carrick should have been in the squad at the very minimum!

And back to Barkley, I agree there are times when he gives the ball away in stupid areas but I would like us to be braver and even if he loses the ball, just to give him that freedom.

If we pay conservatively and 'tactically' we aren't gonna win the Euro's.
If we go all out attacking, we aren't gonna win the Euro's.

So given that I would much rather we go for it and play like we did in the second half, but fear with Hodgson, he is naturally inclined to play it safe until his hand is forced.

Was more him and Milner playing in front of Carrick/Wilshere as part of a central three with AOC and Welbeck providing the width as they did against Scotland.
