With this being the 60th season since our last FA Cup win - a 3-0 win over Blackburn in 1960, and the first time in almost 20 years we have been properly excited about a cup run - i have pulled together our FA cup performance since we last won it.

Some things that jumped out to me..

    1. In the 9 seasons from 72/73 to 80/81, we got to 3 SFs and 2 QFs.
    2. In the 9 seasons from 83/84 to 91/92 we didn't get past the third round.
    3. We haven't had a 2nd round exit in the last 60 seasons, not that suprising as it was only in the mid-80's that we entered at the 1st round stage - but still!

Stats only show so much though, and what i love most about the Mix is people's personal stories/memories from cup runs of yesteryear (especially as i'm only 27), so hopefully below jogs some memories!

Did they find out you were on the Mix too much?

Great work by the way Shiffers, had forgotten we weren’t a bad cup team in the mid/late 90s

I remember the QF and the SF from 1998 but I have no recollection of the semi-final draw.

Was there genuine excitement that we might draw Sheffield Utd and get an easier route to the final? Drawing Arsenal was as bad as it could have been!

How was it decided who would play at Villa Park / Old Trafford also? Was there a pot of stadiums used for SF's and they picked which to use based on who got through to SF?

Newcastle Utd, 3rd Round, 2003. One of the best matches, Wolves or otherwise, that I've ever witnessed.

Lost 1-0 at Grimsby. Graham Turner was ****ed off at Keith Downing not shooting with his weaker right foot when he had a chance to score.
I was 10 and it’s stuck in my head.

Grounds generally used for semi finals were:-
    Villa Park (us 78 ,98)
    Maine Road(us 73)
    Old Trafford
    Hillsborough(us 81)
The above were the key four grounds regularly used but the next two have been used.
Highbury (Our 81 spurs replay and **** lost to Ipswich there)
White hart lane (Only used for a low attendance game - Wimbledon and Luton ?)

I think clubs tossed a coin and as far as I can recall the ground was selected based on geographical location of who got through.

Here's an obscure fact for you that rarely gets mentioned, particularly by the man himself.

Former Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan played in that game for Blackburn and broke his leg!

I know, amazing that one had slipped under the radar isn't it!

Earliest fa cup game i remember was cheltenham at home, 87. I think we was in a purple patch at the time, scoring for fun but somehow they took the lead, but we won 5 1.
Think coventry were knocked out by sutton in the same year.

Coventry knocked out by Sutton the following season, 88/89. I think Norwich then battered them 8-0 in the next round!

Brett Angell, who eventually ended up getting a big move to Everton in the 90s via Southend, scored Cheltenham's goal that day.

Any memories of 2002/2003 when we lost in the QF away to Southampton?

Did people go with high expectations or were we lucky to get that far?

Not with McGhee in charge. I swear he took folding stuff to throw that semi-final. There's no other rational explanation.

Had expectations. Remember being disappointed leaving the ground. We were on a roll by that time of the season and in good form. We’d done well in the cup, played really well against Newcastle and Leicester.

Southampton won comfortably. Chris Marsden scored.

It was a game that really should have shown Sir Jack how that squad was going to struggle in the premier league the following year without decent investment.

It was a sunday and I missed my lad being man of the match for Phoenix v Bilbrook. Something peed me off at the match, I cant remember whether it was the ref or Marsden (who played for us) or how the game was going but I left the ground before halftime and went to the nearest pub and had a session with a saints fan who had been ejected, surreal and not one of my best FA Cup memories !

I remember listening to it on the radio on the way back from a school residential trip. Struck me that it was a bit of a damp squib. We didn't really compete and were never really in the game.

Beat Bristol, and get a home tie next, avoiding Man City, Chelsea/Man U, and only then will I get really excited about it. Semi Final at least please Nuno. Saying that, Bristol will be much harder than we imagine.

Before I was a season ticket holder I wasn't fortunate enough to get a ticket for this. I was quite determined to be there though and having family who were Arsenal STH's thought I'd explore that avenue. My cousin's were hell bent on going so I wasn't having their tickets but they were friends some of the players so asked around. One cousin had chanced upon a ton of PAYG top up cards for an untraceable mobile phone lol. He said he'd called a premium rate number over a hundred times in the hope of winning tickets! But never heard anything. He went on holiday and arranged to fly back to Birmingham the day of the match and then home from there.

I ended up getting a ticket from Ian Wright and when my cousin got home there were 2 tickets in an envelope by the front door!

McGhee robbed us of any chance we had of winning that. The Arsenal fans were laughing before kickoff that we'd dropped our two best players. I was sat in the Holte End literally next to the stewards separating the two sets of fans, after the game I walked towards the line of stewards who blocked my approach, I unzipped my kangol rain jacket to reveal the white and teal Wolves away shirt. At least I was able to leave with the Wolves fans. Very weird experience having Wolves fans vitriol being directed at me.

Edit: thought you'd asked about Arsenal at Villa Park oops

It was a bit of a damp squib in the end,as others have said, and a bit of a disappointment considering how well we had started to play by that point of the season.

The first goal was an overhead kick by Marsden, that seemed a bit soft,I'm pretty sure it was thought Murray could have done a lot better with the shot,he seemed to let it go through his hands and under him.It was probably the only error I can remember him making in what was a pretty superb season for him. The second goal was an OG by Paul Butler, who I think unfortunately ran into a cross and unluckily diverted it past Murray.

We never got going really and it was a real anti-climax after the thrilling 3rd round tie against Newcastle, and the 4-1 hammering we gave Leicester in the 4th round,Leicester finished 2nd and were promoted automatically that season,so a decent result that.

Hope we make a good go of it this season!

And he even subbed Goodman (for Bully) who was our only threat, I remember the Arsenal defenders looking at each in disbelief as Goodman went off. He got subbed for trying too hard. He should have stayed on to play alongside Bully.
And then he also put on the wrong Robbie (Slater the end of season panic buy)
Loaded with unfathomable decisions from start to finish.

For my 4th birthday, my brother gave me his 60 cup final record, inc. scratches...my 1st ever record...so...

...Norman Deeley's name, repeatedly pounding out the new gramaphone, ensured the nearby attractions of Johnny Haynes of Fulham, or, Jimmy Greaves of Chelsea, meant nothing to a southerner born and wolf-cub weened from afar.
