Now 20 points clear of "the best squad in the championship".

  3. A nice win on Boxing Day and we'll be 23 points clear of TBSITC.

I thought it would be tough, and would hope that Doncaster will do sufficient over the course of the season to stay up. We ground out a result today and that will have to do increasingly over the second half of the season as more and more teams will try to close us down/stop us from playing and indeed raise their performance against us. I have said elsewhere I thought Doncaster were a better team than there league position suggests. Delighted it was Collins who scored. The fact that he remains our first choice reserve defender suggests Mick rates the lad, even if a number of Wolves fans don't.

Being Irish, delighted Reading won today. My hope is that we go up as champions and Reading as runners up. After that I would probably like to see Sheffield Utd occupy the play off place, but not really concerned on that one.

Another ground-out win. Pity Kightly got his fifth booking of the season.

Strange how Karl Henry and Chris Iwelumo raced to their fifth and fourth bookings but have not been booked since.

    12 to go. $$$$.

What made me laugh, and what sums this team up, is that with 15 to go, there was not a doubt in my mind that we'd win.

    DangerBoy - Cheers son!

Important win today, sounded like Collins and Henry were the standouts. Boxing Day will be fun with Reading-Cardiff, Ipswich-B'ham and our game against Sheff U, cant wait!!

  9. Delighted with the 3 points and Collins yet again showing that he's one of the best aerial threats Wolves have ever had at set-pieces.
Clearly not a fluent performance but it seems that Jarvis is now primed to start at home on boxing day which is gunna help. Think it's worth mentioning that we've also kept our 3rd consecutive clean sheet, which is an important little run to get on as we have an inexperienced defence who will surely grow in confidence from this.
Sounds like the Hen made a one particuarly good save and again a confident Hen is a real asset to us.

  10. Also meant to say congrats to Henry, he's wearing the captains armband and he showed that when the going gets tough, he's ready to battle, scrap and drag three points out of scrappy games. He's certainly worth his starting place in the side even if we strengthen in midfield in Jan.

Great win and was always going to be a hard match given the statistics for Donny at home. Would think Jarvis will be on bench vs Sheff Utd, 1 being that they are very physical and 2, he'll be starting against Blackpool instead of Kights so dont think Mick will want him for 2 matches in 3 days after so long out and the weather at its coldest

We sounded poor again particularly in the first half and against a better attack we would have fallen behind. Iwelumo and Jarvis should have started imv. Nevertheless, another 3 points and a 9 point gap to third. Kightly's suspension and missing the Blackpool game is a nuisance. I hope MM makes it an absolute priority to get another decent winger into the squad in early Jan.

Henry and Collins seemed to do particularly well, the rest very average to poor based on the commentary. Against better teams this kind of form will be punished but hopefully in front of a full house we can give the bully boys of Sheff U a bloody nose on Boxing day and really raise our game with Jarvis and Kightly playing a full 90 together at last and Iwelumo up front from the beginning. Ward is not and never will be a winger and needs to be retained at LB.

Three consecutive clean sheets - incredible, nice to see us keeping them again as well!

  14. I'm just a couple of sips into my post match pint. In summary, a determined performance against the most determined defence in the league. Doncaster had no chance up front with a couple of midgets that make me look gargantuan. Collins MOTM, nicks it from Mr Consistent Foley. Absolutely top support too. Most stayed for the fan/player love in. Warms the cockles.

A team with a better attack wouldn't have played 5-3-2, allowing us more time and space in the final third. You can't just say 'a better attack and we'd have fallen behind' without considering the change on the dynamic of the whole side; unless you mean a 5-3-2 with Robinho and Torres up the top?

Agreed - he came out second half, put in a committed performance and the tackles were flying in from him. That's how a captain should perform, grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and rallying the troops when things aren't completely going your way. Him, along with Stephen Ward and Neill Collins were some of the players subject to a lot of stick last season and they're all going some way to proving us wrong!

  17. It would be a big reward for the club if after assembling a young talented squad we got promotion through perservering with them and allowing them to grow in character from the dissappointments and set-backs of last season.

Many people have said this was a game we probably wouldn't have won last season and whilst Mick has upped his game, hopefully a lot of the players are showing the benefit of a bit more experience and savvy to go with their talent.

Agreed, Ward has been fantastic as leftback probably played his best games at Wolves in that position this season and has done a real job for us there.

Henry always plays his heart out for the club, if you cut him it would be solid gold running through his veins. He plays with his heart on his sleeve and really pulled us into the game today.

Neil Collins still gives me the shivers but to be honest he has played really well when he has been given the opportunity. He makes a good sub as he is versatile and can play right across the back four.

Lets hope they all continue to rub our noses in it and keep on playing great football

Come on the Wolves and thanks for making me very happy at Christmas... Now can I have a happy Boxing Day too?

It was clear from the start that we would be playing a very defensive team, which although at the bottom had the second best home record for goals against in the league. Surely that is enough to make you understand that they are very defensive, and even their Wolverhampton born manager stated that he wished to get a draw from this match. Which all burns down to their defensive strategy. So the collection of 3 points with a 1-0 result was satisfactory enough.

I think that from the picture their ground is not very wide and this creates difficulty for our wide players who find the opponent on them all the time.

So let us enjoy Christmas. Hope that our players would remain very disciplined over the Christmas period so that they will be able to get another 3 points on boxing day. If that happens, a draw at Blackpool would enable us to finish the year in top spot with at least 60points from 26 matches, which would be a huge feat towards automatic promotion.

    Come on you Wolves.

That's exactly it - a fair amount of this squad is assembled from those who suffered play-off heart break last season and the season before, added with a bit of quality at centre-half which we were lacking for those two seasons and a target man up front who must of us identified would be a good compliment to our style of play. If we can sort out midfield (though that could already be sorted if Mark Davies gets back to his best), bring in some wing cover and maybe some stiff competition for SEB - we will be laughing.

Let's not underestimate this result, or get carried away with the fact we sound (or did) play quite poorly. Doncaster have conceded ONE goal in the last 5 home games. They defend well, stoicly, and are very difficult to break down as we discovered. It was never going to be a tonking, despite the points difference between the two sides. This is a good, hard earned three points.

Well said, the fact they played 5-3-2 overrunning the midfield and playing three centre-halves to stop our strikers getting too many chances didn't help either.

  27. Indeed, pretty much as it was. Doncaster put their nads and other body parts where they shouldn't if they want to have a family.

True but they were without their first choice CB. If Iwelumo and Jarvis had started we would have been a much more effective attacking force imv. Nevertheless a win is a win and glad to have ground out another.

They have scored 11 times this season and we almost went behind at least twice in the first half plus they had a couple of penalty shouts turned down. Despite the results our form has not been great and if even their powder puff attack could cause problems its a little worrying imv. But hey we are top of the league so I'm certainly not complaining and in the second half we had a much better balanced team.

You can't rush Jarvis back too quickly. He seems to be a boy prone to niggles and when the weather is like it is he will be susceptible to a niggle or pull.

    Great result.

  33. Also thought it was good win, as Blouse and Royals had an early kick-off and the players would have known that they were expected to capitalise on whoever dropped points by beating the bottom placed side. Bodes well to win under that kind of pressure if we're going to get promoted by leading from the front.

    :D OK mate!

Whoever you play, you're not going to go 90 minutes away from home without conceding chances, at any level. Particularly when our back 5 is without 3 would-be first teamers through injury. The fact that we're coping, and a starting to rack clean sheets up despite pressure, is encouraging to say the least.

On their chances etc, I'll wait until I read the reports, as radio commentary is about as accurate as Ismael Miller.

I'd be very surprised if you look at the`stats for most matches if both sides don't have at least 5 chances each. A good goalkeeper is as important as a good striker and Hennessey and the back 4 did their job today. Their powder puff attack scored nil.

I don't think it's a coinsidence we keep putting in good second halves, it's down to fit young players wearing down the opposition and suspect it would have been the same if we'd started with the ending 11 and finished with the starting 11.

EVERY side that has won promotion from this division has won games in which they not played well or in which the opposition deserved more.

The alternative is to win those games you dominate and lose/draw the rest. That leads to less points.

Today was a massive and crucial win and as somebody else has said one that we'd have lost in previous seasons.

Resilience is just as important as ability and it appears that ,this season,we have both.

Back from the match, parents living in Yorkshire has some benefits sometimes seemingly. I think MM was right to start with Keogh and Hill, if you want players to show you and the club loyalty and respect then you need to do the same with them. So winning two games, scoring five goals and not conceding then i think you deserve to keep your place. Though we were much improved when big chris and jarvo came on, so i would start them both next game.

Personally for me Kightly was most disappointing, he needs someone to challenge him for his place, the game he misses i would make him come along and watch the team. He was coming inside far to many times his tempo was low. He needs resting and challenging for his place.

must say ward was great especially when he moved to left back, he now is first choice left back and big George will have a job in getting his shirt back. Other good mentions obviously go to Collins who not only scored but also did not put a foot wrong defensively. Particularly considering he was called into the team last minute. Big Chris was his usual self, bring everyone into the game and makes us tick. Was very impressed with Vokes when he came on, personally next time either SEB or Big Chris can not start it should be Vokey who gets the nod.

Thought it was a decent result today. Was glad Collins got a start as it will do wonders for his confidence as will the crowd singing his name (even if they were singing he used to be $$$$e!). Not sure if there's a ratings thread but..

Hennessey - Didnt have anything to do aside from one good save tipped onto the crossbar in the first half. One dodgy moment when, instead of catching the ball decided to do a star jump! At least Tony Daley seems to be getting them fit I suppose. 6/10

Foley - Mr Reliable as always. Calm on the ball, turns, volleys, everything a top player needs really. Wasn't helped by Kights lack of support. 7/10

Collins - My MOM. Came into the team last minute (Mancienne injured in the warmup) and did a cracking job. So different to the collins of last season, seemed comfortable on the ball, didn't panic and capped it off with a goal. Best aerial threat on our team. 8/10

Stearman - Good game. Couple of decisions that maybe went a bit wrong for him, but did some good tackling back and was unlucky not to score in a manic 10 second bit of play. Couple of mazy Stearman runs and showed qualitys of a defensive midfielder at times! 7/10

Hill - First time I've seen him play and I was impressed although I think Ward is the better option. Seemed rusty at times pushing too far forwards. Not the tallest defender but in fairness he didn't let anything in the air past him. 6/10

Kightly - Appaling display. Literally the worst of the season from him. I don't know what it was but nothing came off for him. He had maybe 2 decent touches all game. Might be being a bit harsh but he passed the ball to their players, just stood by as Foley was hounded by 2 men, out of form maybe? Seems to have been for a while.. Picked up a booking aswell which I think rules him out of Blackpool. Hopefully he'll come back raring to go. 4/10

Henry - Gritty performance, the kind you expect from a captain. Tackling back and covering was excellent. Passing was same as always and heading was good. Showed good leadership calming the players down at times. One moment of madness. Don't know what happened but seemed like one of their players was holding him down and he lashed out perhaps? May be on the Championship tomorow. 7/10

Edwards - Ran around, did his best, couple of nice passes and headers. Got a knock to the face early on but got up and carried on. 6/10

Ward - I think he struggled with the less attacking Hill behind him. Tried to go round the man a few times but I think gave up when he realised he didn't have any support. Penalty shout that I didnt really see. Much better in the second half linking up well with Jarvo at times. 6/10

Keogh - Felt sorry for him today. Every ball seemed to be hoofed to him and he was expected to do what exactly? He's not the same sort of player as Iwelumo, he needs balls to his feet where he can do something with them. Some nice balls and ideas but teammates didn't see them coming. 5.5/10

Ebanks-Blake - Quiet game, which is normally good for us as he pops up and scores! Got stuck in at times and ran a bit more than normal. Didn't play to well first half but brightened up when Big Chris came on at half time. 6/10

    Subs:

Jarvis - Gave balance to the side and an injection of pace. Few nice balls in but with Kights having a shocker they were allowed to double up on him. Nice to see him coming back for the new year. 7/10

Iwelumo - Wins everything in the air and todays ref seemed (most of the time) to see that he wasn't fouling the defenders. At one point I remember him running half the pitch length to stop them having a goal kick and conceding a throw in, I think showing how much he wants to be in the starting lineup. 7/10

Vokes - Not too much to say, chased players did the normal. Almost got in on goal but the cross was too near the keeper. Bit surprised Ebanks came off aswell. 6/10

Crowd: Really good atmosphere. Bit quiet at times but came alive when we scored. Doncaster support was shocking and was loudest when we narrowly missed! Seemed like a party to them! Some complete tits on the left hand side of our support he got a lot of stick especially after we scored and soon left. Lots of mickey taking to the bloke who got arrested for hugging Collins. Hope it was worth it!

    Just back.

First half was terrible. Worse than QPR.

The right subsitutions were made to spark us into life, but Keogh can feel a little hard done by, because he wasn't one of the several players who went missing.

The Centre Midfield was non-existence, could not get their foot on the ball, and this affected our whole play.

Obviously second half was an improvement, if still way off our best. I'm not a huge fan of MM taking off SEB when we are in the hunt for a goal, yes we got one, and Vokes is a useful player, but I would like to see him stay on in such situations.

The biggest negative for me was Kightly, had his worst game I have witnessed. Didn't help Foley at all, seemed almost to be hiding at times. And when he did get the ball, was ineffective.

I am a believer in the best team starting, and by not doing that today, we could've sacrificed 2 points. Jarvis and Iwelumo to start on Friday.

Support was fantastic, the cheapo corner especially. Another 3 points is the main thing though. The fact that we are grinding out these wins despite somewhat lacklustre performances recently is a good sign. I would be happy if it continued all the way til the end of the season, but from a sheer entertainment point of view, hope we can re-reach the levels of August-October.
