says we are after him according to reports in the sun.
No thank you.
agreed, not what we are after imo
Not for me
Just seen this on BBC Gossip.
He seems to have been around forever but is only 24!
Not the greatest scoring record for an attacking midfielder, yet one who brings something a little different to the table. There's no doubt potential there and i always thought he looked a little classy, whenever i've seen him, which probably isn't enough for a 'proper' opinion... yet for the right price, get him in - it all adds to the competition.
For the record - here are his 'wikipedia' stats -
Ipswich - App 30 - Goals 8
Newcastle - App 37 - Goals 5
Charlton - App 102 - Goals 13
Ipswich (loan) - App 9 - Goals 0
... by the way, it also says this on BBC Gossip -
"Reading and Wolves look set to miss out on midfielder Andrew Surman, who says he is happy to stay at Southampton. (The Sun) "
I thought Jez & Mick stated they'd only bring in people throughout this window if they improve the team? I don't think Ambrose does.
That said, I was humongously wrong about Iwelumo.
So'ton might not want to keep him though, if the right offer comes along...
A taller version of Corica
When I saw him play for Newcastle, Ipswich and Charlton in the prem I really was impressed.
If he could re-capture that form, Yes please.
However he has had a poor 18 months, so the question has to be can he re-capture that form.
Shouldnt we just trust MM?
If he believes he will improve the squad and he can get the best out of him, I.E. big Chris...then we should let him.
THe guy was a major talent. Moves too big clubs and he just seems to have lost his way...
The last sentence could have been a description of Bothroyd when he joined us!
That said, I trust Big Mick to get the best out of more honest, hard-working players.
We're in a completely different situation.
Bothroyd was here because he was available and we were in need. IMO
Don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily against the signing. Bothroyd came with a reputation and I've personally never heard any rumblings about Ambrose. He looked tidy enough early on in his career. Any ideas on why he's never fulfilled his potential though?
When He was at Newcastle He looked a real good prospect. He had something, At the age of 24 that form could still be captured. Would be competition for the wide places.
Ambrose could be available for as little as 250k from Charlton. Ipswich had agreed that fee for him but decided against it. He is currently on good wages though. I'd be interested at that price for the quality he "could" offer and he can play anywhere across midfield I think.
For 250k worth a gamble I suppose. Certainly seemed to have something a couple of years ago but has gone downhill since. Not sure where he would fit in if we have Gow, Jones and Davies already fighting it out as attacking midfielders unless he can play effectively on the wing too. But it is only the Sun after all.
I agree. Whilst at Newcaslte he looked like kid with class. His career hasn't quite panned out that way, but he's young enough to get it back on track, for the right money.
Would be an excellent signing who can out-perform most players at this level and would be ready for any potential step-up to the Premiership.
I would still like to see an old experienced head in the middle, someone with a touch of class like Tuguy from Blackburn. My big fear is our inexperienced team not being able to see it out, basically bottling it.
Going forward were the strongest team in the division when Kightly and Jarvis are playing but we are really poor on the ball and need that Gary McCallister type player imo.
Ambrose is one of these players, who at an early age get a move to a big prem team, and think they have made it and would probably only come here looking for a payday. Best to steer clear IMV.
A payday...at the age of 24?
If it doesn't work out for him at his present club, he'll be a league 1 player next, a move to us would certainly be lucrative, plus a 2 or 3 year contract gives him a very comfy lifestyle.
I disagree with what you think his motives are.
Mind up in saying that...He'll probably go to leeds if not us? lol
At the age of 24 he should still want to prove himself. If i saw him in the line-up playing against us, id be worried about what he could do...
Agree completely. The reason we often resort to playing long balls is down to nerves and inexperience. Someone to settle them down would really complete what is the makings of an outstanding team.
I know it's all subjective, but if I saw him in the line-up against us I'd be feeling rather relieved.
He did look ok at times for Newcastle, but then again, some on here are saying Darron Gibson's looking good for Utd. And I wouldn't want him back.
And therein lies the basis of this thread! Probably just an unfounded rumour.
He'd be worth the gamble at £250k but I wouldn't take him for much more. I wonder why Ipswich didn't follow up their interest?
I thought he was about 28-30, not 24!
Because he wasnt good enough during his loan for them to spend £250k on him.
That said, I'd say the Sun & NOTW are more often right than the other red tops*
*highly important face-saving disclaimer - not that I'm sticking up for them due to personal preference; just from what I read via the Beeb's gossip column and the perceived % of stories that seem to come true. The Mirror in particular is always wrong.
You Really are Statto
Thanks Del. Those stats are quite interesting.
Interesting that the Sun is quite 'credible' in the list, yet its sister paper is near the bottom in accuracy. And shame on the Mirror - being beaten by the Star...
He could be the wide cover we need, he's not a central midfielder. Nor will Gow be used in central midfield.
I'd rather have Wes Hoolahan, who for some strange reason can't get in the Norwich team and would be available on the cheap because their yet another team who are skint.
We've wanted him before and Mick has pulled out.
After being so negative about the proposed Gow move I'm loathed to be seen as just slagging off anyone we're linked to. But whilst I'm desperate for us to sign an out and out winger Ambrose has just looked worse and worse whenever I've seen him over the past few years.
Mick and Co have done an excellent job in my view (there exceptions of course) of cherry picking players who stock appears to be on the rise and who have shown good form. That doesn't seem to be the case with Ambrose to me so I'm not very keen. Karl Henry is perhaps the best example I can think of as a current first choice player who wasn't signed when he was playing particuarly well for his previous club but with his connections he clearly had an overwhelming desire to play for us.
I'm not saying we should only sign players who are in red hot form, but as a Jan signing signing a player from a club who've been pummelled all season could mean bringing in really low confidence. I'd have thought he'd want decent money from us and whilst at 24 he can certainly improve I'd prefer us to look elsewhere. However, it wouldn't be the worst move we could make and if we couldn't get anyone else I'd rather Ambrose than no wing cover at all.
