Collins should play ahead of Mancienne tomorrow

Discussion in 'Molineux Mix Archive' started by sheffield wolf, Dec 25, 2008.

  1. I predict that McCarthy will play Collins ahead of Mancienne against Sheff Utd tomorrow - and so he should.

Collins came into the team against Doncaster at short notice and performed brilliantly. MOTM and a the winning goal - that's certainly putting a 'shift in'.

The guy has his faults as we all know. He doesn't have much pace and his decision making when he has time on the ball can be woeful but his bravery in the tackle and sheer dominance in the air make him a vital cog in our promotion push.

Mancienne has played well during his loan period and his turn of pace and quality on the ball have been a breath of fresh air....BUT.....he struggles to deal will strong, powerfully built centre forwards (eg Bent). He leaps well for a guy who's 5ft 10inchs but I still don't think he's big enough or brave enough to cope with being a centre half. Mark my words, he will end up being a full back or a brilliant holding midfielder.

Against a well drilled, experienced and direct team - especially with players like James Beattie, Collins will be in his element. Mancienne has pulled out twice already with a cold and a headache....there is no way on this earth that Collins would have done that - he'd have played with influenza and bullet lodged in his brain.

In years gone by Collins would have been the sort of first man over the trenches, the captain's favourite, the boy who carried out orders without question. Whether this is because he has the brain the size of a mouse or a heart the size of a lion I'm not quite sure.

I'm sure that if we lose, Mick will be blasted for 'picking his favourites' but Collins deserves the shirt for tomorrow's match - he's earnt it.

I thought Manciennce pulled out last week because he turned his ankle over in the warm up?i would play collins tomorrow. He was MOM last sat and he was MOM away at sheffield united. He is the ideal person to deal with someone like Beattie

  3. Nothing in there that i havent already said i agree entirely

  4. Mancienne missed the last one with a migraine.

I agree as well to be honest, Manciennes brilliant, but Sheff Utd are built for Collins, and He's brilliant against that kind of opposition.

  5. I also believe Collins to be the better option tomorrow against a strong physical Sheffield United side.

Mancienne should play because he's the best partner for Stearman. Collins may have had a good game against Donny but there should be no room for sentiment. Harsh on Collins but you should always play your best players as often as possible.

  9. cant say i have fella, although i think i heard him mention that name earlier.
or is this just some joke that im to young and niave to know about ?

Not a joke Evo. Your dad seems to feel that central defenders have to be tall. I mention Colin Todd because he was a class act at the centre of defence and a short $$$$ too boot.

  11. Oh i will mention it later and see what his responce is. But i have to say i have the same feeling about centre half big strong and intimidating but still with a decent footballing ability

Roy McFarland was better. They did compliment each other well though.

God I feel old remembering that.

On the basis of the Doncaster game and Collins performance against the blades at their ground, then clearly he should start. However, if Beattie isn't fit and then Mancienne would be much better equiped to deal with Stokes/Sharp etc. Difficult one for Mick.

That isn't the point though. The point is about someone who isn't a collossus can be an effective central defender.

BTW Colin Todd won the PFA Player's Player of Year in the 70's (not achieved by McFarland), 20 odd England caps and went for a then British record transfer fee when he moved from Sunderland to Derby.

Bob Todd, on the other hand, was quite tall, but found success alongside the more diminutive Jackie Wright. Cannon and Ball is another example of a brilliant Tall-Short pairing. Barker and Corbett, Kingsley and Martin Amis, Toulouse Lautrec and whichever dirty slapper he was banging at the time... the list goes on. A difference in height allows for a greater range of vertical vision. Collins and Mancienne is thus the optimal pairing at the back for the Wolves. Science speaks!

MM would need to consider another factor here, the following match in 3 days time.
Most probably he would retain Collins and Edwards today, and then replace them on Monday. Although there is a good possibility that at Blackpool, Collins will move to left back, with Ward moving up to Left Wing, with Jarvis moving to the right instead of Kightly.
MM may also need to change the two upfront starting with Chris today and start with Keogh or Vokes on Monday. Having 3 days rest rather than 2 days, should suit Wolves better over this period.

mancienne should play because he is the better player. Collins has improved 100% but he still scares me and is the more likely to make mistakes!

Why would collins play left back at blackpool when there are any number of alternative combinations that mick has favoured this season?

I have to agree with Sheffield Wolf on this one.Not at all convinced by all this Mancienne hype anyway I'm afraid. What I saw of him (at Southampton) he struggled to cope with their physical strikers, gave away their goal and scarcely won a thing in the air.He has pace and skill and would make a good attacking full back perhaps rather than central defender.Besides he's not a Wolves player is he-Collins is totally committed in every respect and he's one of ours as well. He'd defintely get my vote. If and when young Mancienne ever actually signs for us I might consider him-otherwise he can keep the bench warm as far as I'm concerned."Emergency loan" supposedly-so where is the emergency??

"Emergency loans" are "emergencies" in name only.

It's just a neat way of circumventing the transfer window.

I take it you have only started supporting Wolves in the last 2 months then? As the "Emergency" was the amount of goals we were letting in before MM signed. But you wouldnt remember that would you?

Collins is a top pro but he will never be in the same class or league as MM. But Collins doesnt deserve to be dropped and todays game would suit him better than MM so i can see him starting. But over the season we are going to need MM in our side as i seriously think he will be the difference between us finishing in the top 2 or finishing in the play offs.

  25. I think Collins played pretty well yesterday.

Made a few good challenges, didn't let Beattie push him around and scored a good header.

    Well done Collins!

Mancienne wouldn't have scored that header and would maybe have allowed Beattie to dominate in the air, so definitely good work by Collins.

MM was used much more effectively nullifying the threat of Nathan Dyer which I think he did brilliantly when he came on.

-So to switch this Thread around to the Blackpool game, who should be the central defence for that one?

    Collins and Mancienne perhaps?

Like you I think Mancienne would be immense as a defensive midfielder. His pace, distribution and reading of the game make him stand out. Although Henry has done a solid job for us we need soemone like Mancienne if we go up

    Mancienne and Sterman.

Collins scored a header and played ok but as is always the case with Collins, just look at that unbelivable pass back he made towards the end of the game. Not good enough, never will be.

Totally agree with you Sale but will Mick? He's been very praising of Collins' attitude recently and I'm not sure he's likely to be dropped.

Thats one of the things that worries me about it.

Mccarthy cannot play Collins because of his attitude. Mancienne came on yesterday at left-back and was outstanding in a position he is unfamiliar with. He has to play.

Stearman is a far better defender than Collins although he also has his moments. I actually feel really sorry for Shackell because on the few games he has played, i think he's been impressive and deserves a chance playing with Mancienne. I think they would complement each other.

I can't take anything you say seriously after the 'collins is the worst defender ever to play for wolves' comment.

Why do people think Collins is better against big forwards than Mancienne ? MM is good enough in the air and hasn't really struggled against anyone bar QPR away, where he wasn't on his own.
You could have driven a bus through the gaps between Collins and Stearman yesterday.

MM back in the centre for Blackpool please.

I couldn't count the number of free headers the Sheff Utd front two had and the amount of times they were one on one with Hennessey. The defence was all over the place in the first half.

Defence were extremely poor yesterday. We were cut to ribbons and only the brilliance of Hennessey kept us in the game. The gaps between Collins and Ward were laughable and only rarely exploited by Sheffield. A better team would have killed us off before half time.
