Mark Halsey reckons that the Championship should also have its own Select Group of (presumably fully professional) match officials to improve standards and ultimately filter talent through to the Premier League.

I think this is a good idea - referees who are new to the Football League list should have at least some experience in the lower leagues before being able to take charge of what could be a very high stakes match in the Championship. It might also root out referees who are woefully unfit such as Brendan Malone. Referees like him have no business being in charge at this level.

Mark Halsey bemoaning the standard of refereeing? Oh the irony.

Harsh - people used to pay to watch him ref every week! :D

The main issue for him seems to be using the Champ to train up Prem refs. Surely there is already a system of different levels of ref, let's face it the one we had yesterday was bad, but not as bad as Mike Jones who is a Prem ref!

As soon as the teams took to the pitch it was clear the ref looked in no state to be officiating a game of anywhere near this standard due to him appearing to be extremely overweight -as was the linesman at the south bank end

    Mark Halsey knows jack $$$$.

I still to this day have no idea how he didn't send Hutton off against Spurs for that tackle on Milijas when we drew 3-3.
