Burnley away train - worth it?

Discussion in 'Molineux Mix Archive' started by Veins Of Old Gold, Mar 2, 2010.

  1. Hi, currently considering getting the train to Burnley but my mate reckons it's not worth the extra money compared to going on wolvestravelaway.

The reason for this is he thinks Burnley is a hole, the type of place that has few decent pubs a place you can't wait to leave.

I must say last season, when I drove through I thought it was a dump.

What is it like in terms of a day out for drinking etc?

It's not Covent Garden, but there's plenty of pubs, ground is in walking distance and it's cheap.

You've got some good real ale boozers and chain pubs like Wetherspoons and Aussie Bar.

It's not the sort of place you go and take the $$$$ mind and I'd advise against wearing colours.

Ten of us will be getting the train and have done so for the last three years without any bother.

Best thing is four pints came to just over £5 last year.

How much is the train? Whenever I've looked over the last couple of days the pricing has come up fairly expensive....There are also about 10 of us that want to jump on the train.

    Anyone got any ideas?

  4. Ahh right tempted to train it then. I explained it must be reasonable as it is a town haha.

Cheapest I can find is £26 return, £20 up there and £6.50 back.

Same as me. I've tried to do trips to Preston and then book singles, but it works out pretty much the same.

You could try Group Travel if there's ten of you, but never had any joy on that myself.

  6. I guess it would be the same price from Manchester too? I have tried Wolves, New Street and Stafford - all the same price.

wolvestravelaway is only £12. Does anyone know how long their beer stop is?

The place is horrible i think, one of them places where everybody knows each other so if your from out of town your noticed straight away. About 15 of us went by train a couple of years ago and the police put us in this hell hole of a boozer right next to the station and wouldn't let us leave until half two.

I think a lot of it depends what time you get in and what you're wearing (no suggestions made there mate). We tend to get in before 11am wherever we go, dress like we're going to the local and tend to get the free roam of where we want to go.

Even Forest last year, there were 30 of us on the train over for my birthday and when we got to the station ther police surrounded the exits thinking we were Wolves hooligans. They took one look at us and let us go past (not sure whether that's a good thing).

We've had good laughs in Burnley to be fair.

Neither do we. You must look harder than us lot, which is surprising seeing many of us come from Gornal.

the pubs should be empty, everyone in Burnley spends their giros on other things. Avoid any residential areas as you are likely to encounter smackheads shooting up on street corners.

  13. I intend on landing there at just after 12. Don't want too get too ratted as I had a banging head during the Hull game haha.

    We never wear colours.

Cricket club next door is where we always head for, always wear my colours only got any "stick" on the way back there after the game last season from chavs saying "you're $$$$ aren't you mate?" & "Brummie $$$$$$$ :withstupid:" even though I've got DEWSBURY WOLF (pretty local to Burnley) on the back of my shirt.

Only ever been to Burnley twice and drank both times in the cricket club, nice place. Last time we went we arrived in Burnley at 9 in the morning. I think it was the year them lot down the road pipped us and we won 3.2. Not a nice place though Burnley, we had people coming out their houses giving us abuse and we bumped into 10 plus on the way back to the station who was ready to give us a kicking, there was only 2 of us. Thank god the old bill came round in there vans a couple of seconds later.

If you come down from the Manchester Road train station, walk down into town and there's a decent boozer on your left for starters. Carry on down and you've got the Wetherspoons, a pool/sportsbar opposite and then the Aussie bar on the corner.

From memory, there's a bar called Pharoh's opposite and another night club/wine bar on the corner. There's also three or four more as you walk through the town centre, but the closer you get to the ground gets more dodgy.

The cricket club is popular, but I've never been in to be honest.

Also vouch for the Cricket Club. Ok to wear colours in there and doesn't attract idiots.

  25. Nice one Jack, looking forward to this one now!
