Obviously in modern times Collina although I have read he wasn`t rated domestically in Italy..

Tieing in with the worst, our old friend Rennie who when he first appeared on the scene was brilliant.

From the past but we never had him (AFAIK) for obvious reasons, Jack Taylor..

Lastly, that little round fat man wasn`t bad. I think he was from Leicester.

I suspect it is harder to have a bestest ref as the old adage of `you don`t notice a good ref` is certainly true, IMO..

I always thought Markus Merk from Germany was a good ref then had 2 awful games (think World Cup and Champions League) which showed he wasn;t and haven't heard him since

Is he the one who got the death threats after a particularly bad/contentious game?

Ref in the City match definitely doesn't fit the criteria. Just denied Robinho a cast iron, stonewall penalty. If it's not a pen then you book Robinho for simulation, he did neither.

Collina for me, superb ref never took any nonsence and he was bald so the hair never got in the way..

Bennett for me, purely because he ref'd the final down in Cardiff!

the top 3 referees in this county at present and who are miles above any of the others..

    Howard Webb
    Alan Wiley
    Andre Marriner

all 3 of them referee with a common sense approach, and dont want to be the centre of attention.

they havent got the arrogance of bennett, dean and riley, and that little $$$$ phil dowd! the way dowd speaks to players and looks at the is disgrace..

Collina was superb.I always rated Roger Milford(Bubble perm). He was so down to earth, refereed with a smile on his face, acted with common sense, treated the players with respect and conveyed the image he was really enjoying himself.I officiated with him a couple of times and really enjoyed the experience. For those with long memories he refereed the Sherpa Van Final against Burnley.A damn fine referee.

    Atwell for me.

    Webb a close second.

George Courtney was a good ref.

Last week I did my bit for charity and reffed a Fairtrade game at Loughborough Uni. I tell you what i don't envy anyone who has to that full time or voluntarily on a Sunday afternoon.

It's good, but tough . . . it's like everyone wants you to please them and to be honest you can only call it as you see it and how you see it is ALWAYS differetn to EVERYONE else!
