Once again an inept refereeing performance costs us...if that was a red card then what about numerous Liverpool infractions which were much much worse, Gerrard leading with studs up twice, Torres' dive and not to mention the stamp on Ward in first half...sick to death of abysmal, one sided, corrupt refereeing - yet another example today!

Yes he cocked up giving it to Berra first of all, but it was a sending off, two definite bookings and both stupid and could easily have been avoided, especially the one where he tried to pull out a back heel, Ward cost us this game not Marriner

You do sometimes wonder how some clubs get so heavily in debt... lining someones pocket seems the most obvous answer at times.. That diving $$$$ Gerrard, I really cant stand the man... Even against Andorra he tries to dive to win a penalty... against amateurs... sad, sad man.

One definitely wasn't a booking, watch it and see...but even if it was a legitimate sending off then surely Liverpool should have had at least a couple of bookings - it'd be nice to see just a little bit of consistency, but once again so one-sided its untrue

I think if he hadn't already been known to the ref with the first booking, he would never have been booked for the second one.

how can a pull back and slight Push be a red, when late tackles that are late and dangerous are not even a yellow

I'm more fed up with Stephen Ward for that stupid backheel he attempted, which got him into that situation in the first place.

Just got back from my mate's house who has ESPN. Referee was $$$$ing awful. Liverpool made countless bad challenges; Torres lashed out numerous times and during the whole confusion with Ward and Berra during the sending off, pretty much every Liverpool player, including sodding Reina, pleaded for a card and waves their hands manically in the referees face. Technically speaking, the entire Liverpool team should have received a yellow card, but of course, a referee couldn't possibly penalize Gerrard or Torres; after all, they're Scouse icons.

Aye, the back heel was pretty stupid, but in all fairness, I don't think the second challenge was yellow card worthy, unless it was a technicality. Torres' acting was pretty obvious, and Ward barely touched him. A foul; quite obvious, but in my opinion at least, not a yellow.

No consistency from the ref. Lucas and gerrard both kicked lumps out of us in the first half, ward made two needless errors- admittedly he shouldn't have been so reckless on a yellow- but if the ref had shown any consistency he wouldn't have been on a card in the first place. I know ward will be inconsolable tonight, but he made a mistake and must bounce back.

I don't think it was a foul but he should not have been in that position

Commentators on ESPN seemed happy enough with the ref, oddly. I think it's in debate whether it was a foul. To me it looked like a quarter inch of shirt and a clip on the heels.

The more I see that 2nd yellow the less it looks like a bookable foul. Any contact was minimal. I can only assume the card was because Torres(?) was past him though well away from a shooting position.
Oh and because Liverpool were struggling at Anfield against a non top 4 team!!!

Both Kevin Keegan and Steve Coppell were very critical of the ref's decisions regarding Gerrard not receiving bookings and they felt that Ward should not have received the second yellow, they also said that if the ref had picked the right man in the first place he probably would not have booked Ward, feeling it may have been a little harsh but as he had already shown the card to Berra he had no choice.

Gerrard didn't get booked because he smiled at the ref and said "sorry, it was stupid". "Big Club" favouritism from the referee.

Without the sending off, Liverpool looked toothless and we would have got a point.

Seems likely to me. 2 very marginal yellow cards leading to a ridiculous red. Agreed that Torres took to the floor a bit easily, but no change their. Not sure why he played as long as he did as he didn't really look interested and he is supposedly not fully fit...

Just had a peek at that RAWK site and the arrogance of many of their fans following a fortunate win, reminds me why the rest fans of every other club (as opposed to the media) detest them.
Two faced, 1 eyed glory hunting $$$$$$s who don't like it when fans of clubs like ours go to Anfield and outsing them even in defeat.

Ref's only have one go at getting it right, in this instance the first thing I thought when I saw it was fould, second yellow.

seeing replay after replay I still think it was a foul, so probably deserved.

However that doesn't excuse Gerrard's 2 fouls that he should've got booked for, also doesn't excuse why Torres wasn't booked for the 'glasses' sign he made to the ref and why Reina wasn't booked for running 80 yds to argue with the linesman!

Poor refereeing overall, and very very biased.

I was shocked when they said he came from Birmingham... I thought there was a rules against that?

I know Brummies are thick $$$$s but I am not sure that is enough reason to stop him from being a ref. It stopd him from being a decent Ref.

He was a joke, add him to the long list of prem refs who are not good enough. Stevie G gets away with all sorts of fouls and hounding of the referee....no cards shown, torres throughs himself around like a big girl.....no cards, Reina runs nearly the whole length of the pitch to get a fellow pro sent off....no cards, another example of the referees not having the balls to make decisions against the 'big' clubs......pathetic

I was VERY annoyed that Benitez ranted like a hysterical toddler until the referee gave Ward the second yellow. What a despicable man - can't win fairly, so he tries to get opponents sent off. I am now avidly looking forward to his firing: we don't need his sort in English football.

As i said on the commentary thread, not giving a toss about england i really hope gerrard gets injured right before the world cup and ends up watching his country once again perform better without him, and hopefully get something nasty like blood poisoning to go with his smashed metatarsal. The smug scouse $$$$ wheeled away after his forearm smash on milijas like he'd scored the winning goal in the world cup final; quite pitiful that his and liverpools demise has seen them needing to cheat their way to fortunate victories against the likes of the ten men of a newly promoted team they struggled past today. It was a real eye opener seeing world stars like gerrard, agger and torres throwing themselves on the floor looking for free kicks throughout the first half- either the ultimate sign of respect that they felt they couldn't play through us or the statistical evidence that we can't defend set pieces or crosses, either way i don't think i've yet seen a team diving around as much as liverpool did today. Appalling that the ref let every lucas and gerrard foul go yet nitpicked with wardy, effectively ending the game as a contest. Not impressed with liverpool and don't think the gap is quite as vast as i thought it was prior to todays game.

TBH constantly blaming the ref last night makes us sound like Albion fans but every crucial decision went against us in a game that we looked likely to get something from. Apart from a verysoft sending off I think of a couple of late Gerrard tackles (surely both worse than Wardys pulls) and his blatant pushing down on Milijas for the first goal.
Oh well happened before this season and sort of evened out so what odds Bellamy sent off tomorrw.

This is probably the last time I shall speak about it. I think the game is over and we should move on and look forward to tomorrow's. I just want to make a point though.

It is OK to have a fourth official assisting. However, his assistance should be based on what he sees not what others tell him they saw.

He also threw the ball away a few minutes before ...nothing like a leve; playing field eh ?

  40. I thought Liverpool were very poor and we held them well. We even looked like snatching a win at times, thought Jarvis and Berra were superb. Mustn't really grumble about the sending off and i'm glad common sense prevailed but yes he was very lenient at times towards them. If that's what it took for a supposedly top four team to beat us then it shows the strides the Wolves are taking. Same performance tomorrow and you never know.
