I'm devestated to see Mick go, even though I do grudgingly agree with the decision.

For me, the new man has to be Curbishley.

Fantastic pedigree, experience of keeping teams up in positions such as ours and of taking them up if they go down.

Not only that, but one gets the sense that he'll get the same work ethic from the players as Mick has, perhaps with a little more quality.

He's been out of football for a while now after he walked out on West Ham but I feel he'd offer us the best route forward.

On an aside, PLEASE NOT STEVE BRUCE!

I tend to agree, though Curbishley may have had enough of football. Definitely not Bruce -- just another version of Mick in terms of how his teams play.

  3. I'd be devastated if Curbishley or Bruce or someone like Phil Brown took over.

Not Curbishley, Warnock or Bruce please.

I know I keep repeating it, but for all the complaints of favourites and square pegs/round holes, Curbishley couldn't find space in his team for Mascherano who now plays for Barca ffs.

He built his career on stability at Charlton, we've not got the opportunity to give him that right now.

And me. I like both Curbishley and Bruce as people, but they are not up to it, for different reasons. Curbishley, out of the game too long, Bruce, an ordinary record. Brown............

This would be my choice (especially because I think we have no chance of getting Rafa).

I really don't know if it's going to make any difference though...I really hope some of those players are taking a good hard look at themselves because some of their performances (along with MM's odd tactics and all) have been nothing short of disgraceful. Everyone at that club must take blame for where we are.

I just hope the new man can come in & save our season.

  8. I would rather they announce Mick as the new manager and say they just sacked him to re-appoint him in order to give the place a boost.

All three of the above would be a big backwards step!

Hah - that would be my preference too actually.

This next appointment is HUGE, we need to get it right. Now is not the time for a manager who's plying his trade (however well) either abroad or in the lower leagues. We need somebody with experience, who can rescue a season with just 13 games left.

Definitely not Warnock please. Bruce is a better manager than Mick (didn't do badly at Wigan) but doesn't exactly set the pulse racing.

Bruce is no better than Mick. Curbishley is though.

The thing I always think of with Curbishley is that his club kidnapped two fantastic Argentines who couldn't get games in his struggling side. He left, they played and West Ham stopped up.

I think (not 100% sure) that it was Pardew who kidnapped the Argies before being sacked...and Curbs who kept them up.

  15. Yeah that's right.

Two world class players JUST kept West Ham up (one in particular) and a "goal" against Blackburn. Nothing to do with the management.

Surely he is the logical choice. He did well at Charlton and at West Ham. Taken from wiki:

"After looking certain for relegation, Curbishley led West Ham to seven wins out of their last nine games, beating Blackburn Rovers, Everton, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, Arsenal, Middlesbrough and a 1–0 win at Manchester United on the last day of the season, to keep West Ham in the Premier League."

OK, so he did have Tevez back then (!), but i don't see another option.

Would love to see Curbishley take over. Failing that, Chris Hughton.

I think he resigned in protest as to how WHU were being run as they were signing players above his head.

We can offer any new manager stability at board room level.

The only doubt is the length of time he's been out of the game, but I recall Coppell going to Reading after a long time out and doing a great job. Just some better technical football would be nice.

Personally I don't rate Curbishley, not for where we want to go, and whoever comes in is going to find it difficult getting the likes of Jarvis, Henry, Foley and Ward playing for him. This was Mick McCarthy's team, and they won't just simply play for the next man as easy as that.
It'll take time for a new man to come in a sort it out, and time is something we don't have.

If this had happened in November and O'Neil was still available I'd say correct decision, but it's February, he's not and we have the usually tosh of Curbs, Warnock and Bruce to debate, If we were Blackburn fans talking about just sacking Kean and we had a choice of McCarthy, Curbs, Warnock or Bruce I know who I'd go for..

In my opinion (and God help me I hope I'm wrong) this may have just doomed us to relegation.

Curbs resigned because the board were selling players without consulting him. Wouldn't be disappointed with him as he has been in the same situation before and been a success.

    Curbs would be my choice.

Plays football the right way. A good coach and would bring his own staff.

Apparently he's interested in the job. Morgan please pick him over Bruce or Warnock!!

Bruce's record at premier league level would probably suggest otherwise i would think. Mick being a good bloke blinds people to his failings.

    Well that wouldn't happen here.

So after mixing up my Alans I'm more in favour of Curbishley than an hour ago but he's been out the game a good while.

    Stole this from another forum:

    His record at West Ham...

Took over in 2006-07 when they were odds-on for relegation. Won seven out of last nine games and kept them up.

Led them to top-10 finish the next season.

Won six points from three games at the start of the following season before being sacked because of a dispute over Board interference.

    And at Charlton...

Got them into Premier League against the odds in late nineties, and kept them there for several years (apart from one season) despite having one of the smallest wage bills. Nearly secured Champions League place in 2003-04.

Curbishley was interviewed for England job in 2006. (It went to Steve McClaren).

Being out of the game isnt always a bad thing. Some managers reflect on their methods and become better managers. I remember Holloway saying that after he was sacked by Leicester he completlely re evaluated his tactics and came back with Blackpools 4-3-3 that got them up and nearly kept them up.

Your argument seals it for me. No one should come close. I have a horrible feeling about Bruce though.
