    I was thinking about the new premier league squad rules which come into force from next season. I have heard a number of different variations so thought I would take a look to see if I could clarify what it might mean to us if we stay up – and I am not saying the job is done just yet.

    My understanding of the new rules is as follows;

    • All clubs must submit a 25 man squad at the start of the season and can re-submit a revised list after the transfer window in January 2011

    • 8 of the 25 man squad must be home grown, the definition of this is registered with a club in affiliated to the English and Welsh Football Leagues for a minimum of 3 years between the ages of 16 and 21 years (with the intention of promoting ‘home grown talent)

    • Scotland and Ireland leagues don’t count as ‘Home Grown’

    • The 25 man squad can be supplemented with any number of young professionals as long as they are under the age of 21 years

    If this list is correct then we already have 7 members of the squad who are not “Home Grown”

    I have left four places for fresh talent.

    This ruling will help clubs like us, looking through that list there's not many included who won't be expected to play a fairly large role, for the teams with massive squads it will mean leaving out a lot of good players and surely the playing field will be a bit more level now?
