I think they are in a bit of crap. I know there are a few here that can do the maths. My basic calculations have them in big trouble.

As far as I know, the world hasn’t ended for them, but they’ll have nothing to spend. They’ve been papering the cracks with loan signings, and they won’t have the same ability to pay John Terry.

The real financial meltdown would come at the end of next season. Their problem is, they won’t have the money they need to get out of the division by then.

So the world hasn’t ended yet, but they can see it coming and don’t have the means to get out of the way.

Their CEO was on the radio mid season and from memory he said they’d be making substantial cuts the end of this season if they didn’t go up.

I suspect this last 2 seasons was **** or bust for them financially in their attempt to get back up.

Their squad is huge and needs trimming, £30m worth of strikers on the bench today.

But they will get nowhere near £30m for them.

    Laughing my **** off.

Lots of loanees will return home, they’ll at least raise money by selling out Vile Park against Birmingham’s 3rd team on the bright side

    Mind the gap knob heads

I think a fair few of their large contracts are coming to an end (Gabby, Richards & McCormack I think) so that reduces the losses somewhat.

I don't think they'll be spending huge amounts though

They are set for a big rebuilding job - they will be forced to sell their best assets, and get the big wages off the books, or they could face a transfer embargo. It's the kind of rebuild a Premier League side usually does when they go down. The difference is, a PL side has three years to cut their cloth. Villa have one shot to get it right.

Grealish is their only real high-value player.

    As for the others:

    Johnstone: End of loan
    Elmohamady: Over 30
Terry: Won’t be able to afford his wages. Retirement?
Chester: Approaching 30. Still decent at that level.
Hutton: Over 30. Will be released
Hourihane: Decent at that level. Big wages.
Jedinak. 33. No resale value. Great beard.
    Snodgrass: End of loan. ****.
    Adomah: Approaching 30. Still decent.
    Grabban: End of loan

Kodija: Decent but never fit. May get decent money for him if he can prove his fitness.
Hogan: Won’t get back what they paid for him.
    Samba: Released
    Onomah: End of loan.

We took a big risk with FFP this year but it was a calculated one. Investing in young, talented players with guaranteed resale value if it went wrong.

Villa went all out on proven Championship experience. Big wages but short-termist with no real contingency nor eye on the future.

Interesting to see the route they go from here.

Bruce said in my paper this morning there would be "difficult times ahead" and said his five loan signings would not be coming back. So they need a new keeper and an ugly free kick taker at the very least.

Not sure he would do any better than Bruce, and if i was Mick i'd want to actually get a job where the club isnt cost cutting.

Whatever the ramifications I'll be watching with a smile on my face. I've no idea exactly how hard this will hit them but they'll surely be in a much worse position next season after losing several players. Given how much their wage bill comes down they should have some cash to spend but I can't see it being much. If they don't go up next season they should be proper ****ed as the parachute payments will have dried up completely.

Well, he does say they may need to sell their training ground. Based on their recent years losses and the average loss they are allowed as the Premier League allowance drops off the three years, they will need to massively cut their losses over the next 12 months.

The original post was sensible, the response was as smart of the other delusional posts we’ve seen from Villa fans all season.

They are in serious trouble now. Nothing a good manager/head coach can't sort, but big signings ain't coming now.

Will be interesting to see if they tread the path of Forest, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds, etc.

Would love it if they stayed down at this level for a prolonged period.

The point was made that sides who go for promotion out of the Championship have two-three years at most to get it, or they have to cut costs to comply with FFP and start again. Villa are on the cusp of that and they could be in real trouble with the age of their squad and lack of saleable assets

They needed a massive clear out anyway and this will give them the impetus to do that, too many clubs employing the same old faces making the same old mistakes. We had our epiphany when League 1 beckoned, they should have had theirs now but who knows with how stupid most football club owners appear to be?

Sack Bruce and prepare for Dean Saunders' homecoming. It's written in the stars. He'll get them out of the Championship.

Gonna be interesting, I see them as a big club, being late 20s they were a perennial Prem side, and often seemed a top 6 contender, when I was getting into football. Surely they’ll have to sell and cut their cloth accordingly next season though. To be fair they’ve been outstripped by three sides spending less with good managers (Colin is good at what he does, no matter what you say), so there’s a template to build from. We obviously spent a lot but mainly on a few players and otherwise moulded a side from rough gems.
