With the World Cup Squad Announcement tomorrow, who would everyone be taking on the plane to Russia?

    I’d personally go with:

    Butland
    Trippier, Walker, Stones, Jones, Shaw
    Lingard, Henderson, Alli
    Sterling, Kane

Hart, Pickford, Maguire, Dier, Smalling, Rose, Delph, Wilshere, Loftus-Cheek, Lallana, Rashford, Vardy

I’d consider Jadon Sancho as a wildcard selection too.

Pretty sure that Southgate will take Ashley Young ahead of Luke Shaw as he provides cover in both wing-back positions.

Agree with most but don’t think he will take Smalling or Delph got a feeling welbeck would be in

Carnt stand the bloke but think Shelvey based on form deserved a call up

Jon Joe Shelvey has to be in the squad. I dont like him but he has undoubted quality on the ball.

All about choice but for me I wouldn’t pick Jones or Smalling.
Jones always seems to be blowing through his rear end on 70 minutes and Smalling has had a very average season .
That said we are limited with our choices.

Shelvey is good, be he is just so lazy off the ball it's unreal, just don't see where he fits in

Shelvey would get sent off in the first half of his first match so no chance of him going

Isn't it one of rules of the competition to have three keepers? I think it is.

    Pope (Pickford/Butland)
    Trippier-Dier-Maguire-Stones-Young (Walker/Jones/Tarkowski/Cresswell)
    Wilshere-Alli (Henderson/Cork)
    Sterling-Lingard (Rashford/Lallana)
    Kane (Vardy/Deeney)

    That's depressed me.

It is quite a depressingly average side.

Well, it is and it isn’t. If there was an English Neves, it would suddenly become a dangerous side.
Shelvey just isn’t as good on the ball, and not even comparable in every other aspect.

Not that we're good enough to get any further than the 2nd phase (we'll maybe scrape quarters at best), but if GS plays 343 because it's the "In thing"... we will get slaughtered. Our midfield is nowhere NEAR good enough to execute it properly.

We all know he will play the ones with 'experience'. Cahill, young, welbeck, hart.

Id like to see the 343 formation.

    Pickford
    Maguire stones tarkowski
    Walker shelvey henderson trippier
    Sterling kane vardy.

I think that would trouble many defences with the pace up front

Shelvey would be in my starting 11. The best passer we've got, whos got the balls to pass it forwards and be brave in possession. Not even taking him sums up Southgate for me - safe boring and predictable.

That’s what I was alluding to.
I think England could genuinely scare teams in a 3-4-3 with likes of Alli, Lingard, Rashford running the winger/inside forward roles like our costa-Cav, and Walker is of course the Doc on crack.

But they don’t have that magic man that the wolves do, popping it around and pinging the 50 yarders around, while still having the nous and work rate to keep it tight.
You could combine the best bits of Dier, Shelvey, Henderson, and they still wouldn’t amount to a Neves.

Plus England are lacking ball playing centre halves that can actually defend as well.

We should make it past the second round given the quality of teams in the group next to us (Poland and Japan anyone?)

If we don't make QFs I think it will be a failure and I have seriously low expectations of this team, although they have played well against Holland and Italy recently. Even though neither of them qualified, they are still better than 50% of the teams who have qualified.

Gonna be disappointed if we make an early exit. Southgate is a good coach whose approach seems well suited to international football. Quietly confident.

Regardless of any squad limitation rules I think it'd be a risky move to only take two keepers. Granted nine times out of ten the third keeper won't ever play, but it's not impossible to think that your number 1 could get injured in the first game and then you're left playing the rest of the tournament with only one keeper. Imagine if the keeper gets sent off in the next game, or worse in the semi final. Imagine going into a World Cup final (not that I think we will!) and having to play one of your midfielders in goal!

I would imagine that is why FIFA have the rule in place. Some countries might be tempted to take two goalies and the rule takes the temptation away.

Makes sense, if he's not first choice there's little point in taking him. He's clearly not first choice any more (and nor should he be).

I think Lallana will be in if fit. Actually think a squad without the superstars playing as a team to a system that suits them might do better than they look on paper. You can at least see what Southgate is trying to do, and he's trying to move in the right direction with a relatively weak squad of players to choose from.

Does Nick Pope start the tournament as first choice keeper for England or does he have to wait for others to drop *******s before he gets the opportunity.

Gotta be honest... not all that excited by England any longer. Still hoping that I get he World Cup bug fairly soon.

Obviously won’t happen but I’d obviously love to see Coady get a call up and dare I say it wouldn’t be too against grealish and sessegnon getting the nod... young hungry players who would give a ****

If I was Southgate I’d knock the stuffing out of everyone and just go wild

I’d have Sancho, Alexander-Arnold, Maddison, Coady, Foden and out of nowhere Bailey.

    Pickford

    Walker
    Alexander-Arnold
    Stones
    Coady
    McGuire
    Mawson

    Dier
    Wilshere
    Shelvey
    Lingard

    Foden
    Sancho
    Sterling
    Maddison

    Kane
    Ali
    Vardy
    Bailey

    ——

    Pickford

    Alexander-Arnold
    Walker
    Coady
    McGuire
    Shaw
