everton going out tonight no english teams left in any euro competitions are we falling behind ..
Everton have put in a laughable performance in Kyiv tonight.
Kiev have played very very well though. Great goal
well thats the first one in on my acca tonight
English teams continually $$$$ing away the Europa League will cost England having 4 champions league places at this rate. Will make the PL very interesting if it gets to the point where we only have 3 CL teams... Though I doubt this will happen seeing as the new TV deal kicks in soon and the big clubs are about to get as rich as Madrid/Barca revenue wise.
Everton pull one back.
You know it's bad when Everton were our last team in Europe. They've been $$$$ all season.
There are no easy games in the PL, unlike all the other leagues in Europe, so that the English sides are knackered come the New Year. It's great to watch the PL but if we want success in Europe there needs to be some big decisions made, for example a winter break for one?
And the reason English clubs did so well in Europe up to about 2011 was what exactly? The Premier League was ***** back then?
As lame excuses go, yours needs putting out of its misery. And you ought to try watching a bit of foreign league football before you start commenting on it.
I'm sure you've advocated a winter break on here many a time. Mind you it hasn't helped Germany this year. They've also been poor in Europe
Winter break would be a complete waste of time for the PL teams in Europe they'd go play friendly games all over the world. We didn't have a winter break when we were dominating the CL.
Just the teams in the PL need a reality check and a wake up call, they aren't as good as they think they are and have been found out the last couple of seasons.
Money has been thrown about but very little to show for it
They need to spend money on youth and for the mean time invest in foreign talent. When the new TV deal kicks in I expect a big upturn in quality player wise in the top teams. Even the lower teams, as all 20 teams in the PL will be inside the top 30 richest in Europe. Currently the 20 teams are all in the top 40. Crazy really
A mid-season/winter/coffee break is another red herring, the breaks come along anyway. The top players in the Spanish sides for example usually play more games in a season than those in Premier League sides. Their winter break consists of one week off between Christmas and New Year. Admittedly English teams probably play three or four matches in that time, but that gets recovered elsewhere.
Man United and Fergie......that's what's missing
I don't share your optimism. All that will happen is that agents will know that clubs have even more money to spend. The difference in salary between England and other countries is already cavernous and it's led to the current situation. No top class player is going to leave Sevilla or Valencia to join Sunderland or Hull.
It's not the optimism. It's the opposite. Tbf the league is turning to be financially much more lucrative than the CL. Such a shame as I used to love watching English teams playing football in the English way between 07-10 battering European teams.
The PL is so commercially led it's sickening. England can produce players who are as good, but it's simple - supply and demand. There is none, because PL clubs want their quick fix. Why invest in more coaching and better facilities quickly - what's the point? The big boys will just keep going foreign for the best talent.
It's time fans turned their back on the latest Sky deal. Switch off their Sky Sports package and let the broadcaster dig into their pits of money to cover the shortfall.
Because players in this league are happy picking up there massive cheques & not working for it as they have 'made it' unlike abroad where they only get money/success big moves if they do well in these competitions.
I wouldn't draw too many dramatic conclusions: teams fortunes always wax and wane
With the huge money Premier League is getting and even bigger it is going to get the European competitions will be less and less important for English clubs. 20 years ago it was something to win the Cup Winners Cup or the UEFA Cup. Today I suppose Everton fans are happy their team is out so they can concentrate on staying in the Premier League.
That is maybe not right, but not only the Premier League money is to blame for it. Also the way the Champions League is run. The same teams every year, it is so boring. It also means that the 2nd competition, the Europa League is treated like a Champions League B, with lesser teams from bigger leagues not treating it seriously in most cases, and bigger teams for lesser leagues treating it like their own Champions League.
Football has gone the wrong way.
To which English clubs are you referring?
What like the Milan team wiping the floor with Liverpool in the 2007 final, Barca doing likewise in 2009 with Utd and 2010 without a single English club in the semi finals?
Admittedly we had both finalists in 2008 and dominated that year but hardly a period of dominance eh?
The period of dominance was between 2005 and 2009 really following Liverpool's shock win over Milan. For the next four seasons England had at least two semi finalists and 2010 was the only season between 2005 and 2012 when an English team wasn't in the final.
For the last 6 seasons though the overall performance of English sides has been poor (only three semi final appearances between them (2 for Chelsea, 1 for Man United).
I still maintain Arsene Wenger is a $$$$ manager, well not $$$$ overall but he's not the best by far at that standard. 13/15 times Arsenal haven't been past the quarter finals which is a joke for that club.
Interesting draw, not ideal for the PL with Juve now having a great chance of getting through to the semis.
Paris St-Germain v Barcelona
Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid
Porto v Bayern Munich
Juventus v Monaco
Decent draws for Bayern and Juve. The other 2 games will be great im sure, i've loved watching the Madrid derby over the last couple of seasons
Kyev are a superb force. They would $$$$ on the vast majority of English teams.
You only have to look at the lamentable standard of the squad Woy Hodgson has just picked to understand its the foreigners that are propping up the Premier League standards !
The period of dominance was the late 70's and early 80's, before proper football was invented
I ay missing them or him one single bit Edge
I really don't know how you can interrupt this thread with such lax statistical thinking. In all those supposedly golden years the English League only managed to provide one team that reached the quarter finals!
You are being ironic aren't you?
The greedy premiership league, has ruined, first the English National team, and now all the English Clubs with so many imported players.
Just thought I'd raise a few points on the 'lack' of competition in la liga.
Barcelona are now 13 points clear of 5th, exactly the same as Chelsea are away from 5th place Liverpool now and are 9 points clear of 4th just one point more than the difference in the PL.
Oh and Chelsea have a game in hand on all those around them v Leicester City...
But yeah it's a two club league...
Pretty random as I've just reread this whole thread and nothing of the sort was previously mentioned
Seems to be pining for an argument, completely pointless post. And on that bombshell
There were comments on numerous threads and the myth that the premier league is far more competitive/difficult than the other foreign leagues is something that's been doing the rounds all week and something you will find has been hinted at in a post on this thread.
