Im proud to be wolves on that second half performance.
We could of won easily but im so chuffed with the fight we showed.
Credit to mick for the subs..and well done guys im so proud, just goes to show you fear nobody and play our game and will win this league.
Much better second half performance!! Delighted with the 4 points this week!
A very good point, I'm really happy with that.
MM - won that 3 points his 3 subs changed the game
A win would've been dreamland, a draw is good, keeps the cushion. Both teams edged away from Reading so hopefully they're gonna start feeling the pressure.
Yep extremely good point - Stearman was easily MOM though Foley his normal reliable self. We really need to chip in for Mancienne if its even a possibility cos we would have lost without him. Kites awful first half came alive the second, same can be said for SEB, maybe Kites needs to be a little less selfish at times?.
I wasn't so sure about the subs Vokes should have scored 2 and Keogh well...gave the ball away so many times as always and I tried so hard to like him ;-)
Henners still makes my nerves jangle.
But theres no way we would have battled like that last season so the display way more important than the point though thats a great result for me. On paper, which of course means $$$$ all, we really can now kick on !!
Down the pub ....
From the TV. Stearman was a rock and MOTM. Manciennce class. Hennessey seems to have no confidence in the box and had me on the edge of my seat a couple of times.
2nd half was great to watch - some great build up play and a battling, never give up attitude, and it's that spirit that will help get us promoted this season.
Chuffed to bits. Just need Reading to lose on Monday evening and that will make it a brilliant week.
I think we were playing for the draw to begin with, at least that's how it appeared to me. Once they scored we went up two or three notches and they couldn't live with it - the substitutions made such a difference. Vokes won everything in the air because he didn't have 3-4 Birmingham players on him like Iwelumo did and could have (maybe should have) scored, Edwards didn't give them a minutes peace in midfield and Keogh could easily have got on the scoresheet himself.
Apart from the lob over Hennessey's head and the obvious goal, I didn't think Birmingham caused us much difficulty at all. I wasn't anywhere near as impressed with them as I was with Reading earlier on in the season and I reckon we could have gone on to win that when you consider the chances we had in the second half that just lacked the finishing touch.
They remind me a lot of ourselves last season - they play defensively but their defence is not good at all, Jaidi and Ridgewell don't have any composure on the ball which resulted in a lot of hoofing. Once Hunt went off they were completely clueless down that side.
Happy with the point in the end said od a thead last week I'b be happy with 4 points from the next two games so can't complain. Agree Streaman MOM dispite the mistake, partly because noone else was really outstanding today. Birminghams front line were a real handful, bu we just abot coped. Though B'ham did a good job of stopping us playing first half, Defended from the front and stopped us getting the ball forward quickly so kightly, SEB and big Chis never had much time or space on the ball. We changed things about second half and were better going forward. A draw probably a fair result overall, although B'ham probably more disappointed after being 1 up.
We defended high up the pich as usual and still seem vunerable to the ball over the top behing the defence as we have in other matches
It's good to read that we have good subs to come on if things are not working. Vokes, Keogh up front, Edwards in mid, and from the last few games. Collins or Shakell wouldn't worry me in defence. MM's tactics / use of subs major improvement over last season.
Midfield might be the one area we need to add some mustard in January
It wasn't a problem when Phillips and Bent were up front as neither of them are pacey players, once Jerome came on then it became a worry.
I thought that we took a long tome to settle in the 1st half, and Stears it was who saved us a couple of times. We played aimless football, hoofing it up to Big Chris or anyone who could be arsed to be up there. I think we were still in the dressing room when Brum scored. Stears turning from hero to villain. We started playing much better after their goal, and Strears was great going up, but a nervous wreck at the back - especially when Jerome was around. The 2 disallowed goals were disallowed for good reason. We eneded the game stronger, with Kites coming into the game much more. We're probably much better playing 2 wingers. Good game for neutrals, I was ready to strangle my wife.
On this performance, we'd get ripped apart in the Premier League.
Keogh was guilty at times of passing it back when he could have taken his man on, but at the end of the day the bloke isn't a winger so you can't expect too much.
Not sure which game you were watching. After Jerome came on, he scored 1 goal and nearly had 2 more.
How many times did Hennessey get tested besides the lob, the goal and the Phillips chance? I personally can't think of any.
Our chances greatly outweighed theirs.
True on the whole, but I still felt even first half that is how some of their chances came about, but we managed to get back, that and the problems McFadden caused.
Dennison did say that, short pass to Foley (which dropped Foley in it) instead of taking on his man, but he did say that Keogh gave us more movement. I have noticed that Dennison is often sharply critical of Keogh in previous games.
There seemed to be a lot more movement with Keogh, Edwards and Vokes on. As I mentioned earlier when we were kicking goal kicks up to Iwelumo and Birmingham would just crowd him out and we'd be under pressure - once Iwelumo came off and Vokes came on they often abandoned him at times and he actually won more in the air than Iwelumo did. Smart move IMO, I was very impressed with Vokes today, he seems to have come on a lot from the previous times I've seen him.
The key was moving Kightly over to the left side. With Gray we might as well have had nobody there. McFadden was leaving massive gaps for Kightly to run in, and their right back (the sub, cant remember the name) was having a torrid time.
Imagine what we would be like with two proper wingers! We'd tear this lot to shreds.
It was Nafti I think.
Very pleased with the point.
1st Half all them, they scored early 2nd and then we dominated and nearly won, very enjoyable 2nd half performance
Excellent result, but i thought we let ourselves down in the first half. Stearman was mammoth, and Ward for me had a really good game, even before he set up SEB, hes a smart player. Though we struggled to break them down for most of the game, but the subs really did change how Brum were playing us. Dont care if im mobbed, but Keogh once again 'for me' offered nothing, too often the ball is played to him in space and he just dithers and gives it away, plays a pass leading to trouble, or just plays the ball back up the field again breaking the counter down.
But nevertheless, a good result given that we hadn't a great game. No doubt Phillips not returning in the second half didnt do them any favours, despite their goal coming from his sub, they just didnt have the same shape/threat the second half. We can play much better than this, and to come away with a point is excellent. Dont know whether its because he hasn't been starting in a while, but Hennessey made me nervous on a few occassions today, he was fortunate that Bent didnt put enough on that lob, i thought he was too early coming of his line.
Iwelumo is also on four bookings along with Kightly and Jones - just a heads up.
Great result, Not a great performance but im happy to stay 6 points clear. If we can draw against 2nd place and not play at 100% then we cant be a bad result.
I feared the worse when Phillips was announced to start and I dont think we dealt with him that well. At the back we looked a bit edgey and up front we lacked that clinical final ball. Overal though an ok perforamce and stay 6 points clear so cant complain.
Very pleased. Thought we showed great spirit and plenty of ability in the second half.
Ward MOTM for me - I thought he was outstanding.
Ward for me too. I thought Stearman struggled against Cameron Jerome when he came on. I can not believe the brainless nobbins who who think Ebanks-Blake is lazy, he is one of the hardest working forwards we have had since Bully. It was tough today, we struggled against a big tough well organised Blues team who basically shut everything down a lauched a series of long balls through the center of our defense. Great to see us battle against a team like them and eventually get hold of the game and finish on top. Good battling effort from all comcerned today.
The comparison to Nathan Blake on the player ratings thread is what got me.
watched on tv.
Stearman was impressive but sadly at fault for their goal...should have dealt with it better. made amends late on with last ditch interception tho.
Ward made 2 gut busting runs into the box providing some sexy interplay - one resulting in our goal - tremendous...exactly what i wanted to see.
Kites SEB and Iwelumo were all pretty pants first half but think that had more to do with Blues astute defending - Carlsey was quality i thought..won most of his headers up against Iwelumo despite difference in height.
Watched a very enjoyable but nerve jangling game on my brothers tv..
I thought the game ebbed and flowed for the first half with Brum picking up a lot of loose balls, including Sebs in the 2nd half!
IMO Hen whilst not as bad as Oaks, is prone to either being glued to his line or bad judgement when coming off his line. Hens kicking specially to bring the full backs into the game was excellent.
Despite conceding early on in the second half, Wolves became the more threatening except for the the blues sub Jerome who got behind and between the centre backs on several bum squeaking times..
There was some excellent interplay on the left between Ward and Kites which began to cause Brum a lot of problems.
Both full backs played really well and you wouldn`t think Ward was a converted forward in terms of his defensive work..
Although Keogh was played out of position I get the impression the boo boys have won, he looked terrified of making a mistake and although the simple ball is generally the right thing to do, there were a few occasions when he could have tried to take the ball forward but played it back to Foley however it meant we did keep possesion.
One thing no one can argue with is he gives movement which is a major part of winning a game. Although he might be playing under instruction to do so, with the ball then being worked out to the left where we were causing a lot of damage.
Birmingham have a very pyhsical side to their game but not in a thuggish way like Sheff Utd, I wonder how much that game took out of us?
Wolves corners were either not very good or Talyor is a good keeper as I think he took every corner.
SEB has a typical strikers game IMO, not for want of effort but not really getting involved with the ball but doing a lot off the ball and took his one opportunity brilliantly.
I thought some of the central midfield play was a bit loose giving Brum possesion when there was no need too but that is the risk when trying to play football through the middle. Possibly the lack of suppporting the front line, when Brum headed clear with the ball dropping just outside the box a Brum player quite often picked up the loose ball.
A very entertaining game which for me ended prematurely with a power cut 1 minute into 4 mins of injury time and Wolves had a corner, by the time I got in the car and got the radio on, the game was over and had to wait an eternity before I got the final result 1-1 which I think was a fair result..
Happy with the point all things considered though fancied us to snatch it a few times at the end.
They were a very good, neat passing side and had me pretty worried in the first half. We were pleased when Phillips was subbed at half time but I feel Cameron Jerome offered them more in general attacking play.
I was worried before the game that Hennessey may be a bit rusty having not played much lately but he did well and only conceded the one goal.
Kightly came into the game well especially in the last 20 minutes or so when he was getting much more involved than of late.
Stephen Ward grows in stature with every game at left back.
Our midfield lost too many battles in the first half. I feel we have an extra dimension whenever Dave Edwards is introduced to the side.
Stearman looked very good going forward again. He was at fault for their goal but they also had a looping effort where Stearman was the last man and just saved the day and put the ball out for a corner.
Thought Sam Vokes did well when he came on, laying the ball off well to his team-mates. He also had a couple of chances which he was unlucky with.
A big point, maintains the 6 point gap. After they went a goal up I feared they were going on to win it and make up 3 points on us.
SEB did really well, second half, first half he like CI was poor.
SEB starting the second half meant CI was subbed.
Keogh, Vokes, and SEB combined well.
Kightly was poor, too much individual stuff.
You can tell Keogh is a striker always looking to bring others into the game.
Our subs made all the difference, better movement.
Vokes did better than Iwuelmo.
I am really pleased with a point.
Here's hoping for a Coventry win Monday.....
I thought Keogh was hopeless when he came on. My Mom would have been a better option.
i quite agree. it was what made the difference. he brought ward into the game more too.
I wouldn't say gray gave nothing, just that the pace and two footed crossing of kightly gave the aptly named nafti too much to think about.
Kightly was not poor. On the left hand side he destroyed their full back and gave us the impetus to get back into the game. His drive is bloody brilliant and without him today we would not have got back into the game.
My other views:
Stephen Ward MOTM.
Vokes did much better than Big Chris today.
Stearman got caught out several times by Jerome although he made two goal saving challenges/clearances.
And that shows your lack of football knowledge.
Sky praised all the subs.
Our shape was better with him.
His movement was excellent.
He does not take players on, but then he is not a winger.
He gets the ball and keeps it.
Too many times Kightly ran at them, and lost it.
The time he held it up and played it rather than run at the defence led to the goal.
too many times Kightly with 2 or 3 players round him tried to take them on and lost it.
the only time he passed it we scored
He only had too make 1 of the challenges because he was shoved in the back
He was still our most dangerous player and to give him 5/10 is laughable!
