We all saw how Mick went out and got Carlos Edwards after reading my post - http://www.molineuxmix.co.uk/vb/showthread.php?t=32086&highlight=carlos so he's probably been waiting for my advice on what to do now he's been recalled. Well Mick my old mate, 3 options for you this time.

    1) Jermaine Pennant, loaning him till January although very ambitious would surely suit all parties concerned, not least to put him in the shop window as Liverpool would be looking to sell him before he walks for nothing.

    2) Scott Sinclair, get him to have a word with Mancienne and get him in with the promise of an England call up after 2 appearances for the Champions elect.

    3) Gary McSheffrey, get him on a Mcindoe style loan with a permanent deal already agreed for January, he would permanently solve the issue of cover on our wings and can also play up front. We saw last time round with Blues how effective he can be at this level.

    Don't mention it, Yammer xxx

Get your own ideas, you rascal. You want Fatty McSheffrey, I'm not having you take the credit for Pennant.

There was a young winger at Blackburn who played a bit of the pre-season game against us, he looked pretty handy, something Treacy, I'm sure he'de be available if we have a word with Incey. Thats if we fail with Scott Sinclair, wouldnt touch the other 2!

Treacy came on for Blackburn yesterday and there's not a chance they'll be letting squad players out given their current predicament.

McSheffrey is injured at the moment and I couldnt really see Blues selling anyone to us this season! Not that I'd be keen on him either if they did decide to.

TBH I don't think Pennant is realistic in the slightest. Just because he isn't getting in Liverpool's team hardly means a drop down to the Championship is on the cards.

We desperately need cover on the left. I'm hoping that Mick can loan someone before the Sheff Utd game, as I can't see Gray coping with two games in a row.

Cant we loan from the lower divisions? It worked with Kites...then pay a transfer fee...

We seem to be aiming for Premier players again...?

Names would be helpful....the only two wingers that stand out for me (in terms of goals/assists) are Lloyd Dyer, who I don't particularly rate, and George Boyd. Both would cost silly money. Mark Yeates is a good player but seems to have gone off the boil a little

The difference between now and when we signed Kightly is that we were mid-table and aiming to consolidate during 06/07 - we're top of the league now. Plus Kightly only had to be better than Rohan Ricketts and Darren Potter and he'd be an improvement on what we had, the bar is a bit higher now.

    1) Jermaine Pennant - Never going to happen.

    2) Scott Sinclair - Would be a superb move.

    3) Gary McSheffrey - no way on earth would they loan him to a side they are competing with, thats just never ever going to happen.

Still think Scott Sinclair would be a good option should he and Chelsea wish him to get some first team experience.

But isnt that our mentality again?

Going back from Prem players who in the past havent entirely helped us?

    Why go back to that?

You can't say "don't sign Premier League players because we signed some before and they were rubbish". Carlos Edwards managed to get four assists in his time here, so he wasn't too shabby.

The key is to scout them properly, both in terms of whether they'll fit our style on the pitch and our ethos and ethics off the pitch.

We've moved on from 2006, I wouldn't exactly be thrilled if we re-signed McIndoe, for instance. As Mick has said, we need better than what we already have, or it's not worth bothering.

Got a feeling a loan deal is on hold until Jarvis has played tonight. If he gets through his spell ok, I can't see a new deal being done. Any problems and a loan will be by Thursday tea-time

Is it this Thursday the loan window closes??

That would be poor planning if so. What if Jarvis breaks down on Friday?

  19. What about the bloke at Barnet - Aldomah is it? We've been linked with him previously I think.

What if all our goalkeepers get SARS?

The point being that there's no point signing someone who isn't going to play.

Mick said he wants somebody who he knows will come in and do well. I don't think he even necessarily knew that would happen with kightly. Bit of a risk with little backup.

Again, things have moved on since 2006. It wasn't difficult to be better than Rohan Ricketts, Darren Potter or Jamie Clapham.

Yes, because one player coming back from a bad injury is the same probability as 3 goalkeepers getting injured.

Sign someone who will play then.

I was only doing guess work.

We may well get through with Gray/Edwards/Ward/Hill/Friend to cover the left hand side until January and then buy someone.

I know, its just not good enough for a team that want to win the title though to rely on players of that calibre. The way i look at it is how would we feel if our opposition had any of those on the wing? I'd say pretty comfortable.

Chris Burke, Glenn Little? There are players out there who should be able to do a better job, even if its for one or two games.

It's not just the l/hand side - we need someone who can cover both wings.

Why shouldn't we rely on them?

Gray is proven at both Premiership and Championship level, Ward has been outstanding this season and we're yet to see Hill and Friend who could well be spectacular for all we know.

I admire your faith and support for the aforementioned playing staff, Mr Z, but in my view they're not quite up to the standard of an auto promotion-chasing team. They can do a job and will provide useful back-up on the odd occasion, but not if we get a long-term injury again to Kightly or Jarvis. It's just too much of a risk.

We've already seen Friend and I think he's going to need time to adapt. Ward as we know is better at LB and his strengths to the team lie there. He's been sensational in that role. The only unknown quantity is Hill, but we need a wing specialist - someone who can do a great job from day one - not another square peg who may need time.

What about Hamill who we saw the other day? i think his loan at Blackpool runs out in January and his prospects at Liverpool for first team football are poor. Reportedly MM was interested in him back in July. At 21 just right for our current needs as cover and competition and can play on both wings I believe.

Surely our current need is for someone between now and January, not after then?

I can see us signing someone permanently in January, possibly Edwards if Sunderland buy some more players, which they probably will.

    Agreed, D.

I think we may see two different players arrive this season; the short term 'quick fix' loan and a permanent signing to provide able competition.

Certainly it would be good to get someone in now although as you yourself said its hard at this stage to get someone in who is better than what we have already. But in any case we need another out and out winger in the squad for the rest of the season imv as either Kites or Jarvis are bound to get injured at some point in the second half of the season.

I think we'll deffo be getting a winger in, the Jarvis injury has proved we cant cope with 1 of them (Jarvis & Kites) being out, let alone both! Not sure how far Gobern is from being fit, but he'd be the backup I'de imagine, but we'de still need one more.

  36. Del Woppio

    Del Woppio Guest

I think we're all *agreed* on it, but it's more difficult to out into place than simply saying' we need a winger'. We need somebody who'd capable of being useful in a Premier League squad, but one who will be willing to play in the Championship, with no guarantee of promotion, but as good/better than havoc and mayhem. It's not easy.

Other than being top of the league and 10 points clear of 3rd place, that is.

Del is right, we do need a winger, but it isn't as simple as just saying that.

We did. He didn't even play every game for which he was available in his spell here.

It's going too far to say we "can't cope" with one of Jarvis or Kightly out of the team.
