The article also said that with some of the money we'd buy Carlos Edwards.
I'd imagine if we were to spend a million or two on a winger we could find one younger and on lower wages than Edwards.
Nothing against Edwards, but I can't see us buying him. I just think it is lazy reporting.

I do think we need to strengthen again in January to compete with the likes of Reading and B'ham over the course of the season.

A couple of midfielders and maybe even another striker.

We should of gone for Chris Eagles, Right age. He has been playing really well so far this season although wasn't brilliant against us..

i`d have no hesitation in spending 10 million or more in january if the right players can be brought in. I think we could improve the team with two class center midfielders, i`d bring in a left winger we can rely on and i`d test the water for mancienne. Also i`d consider a move for another striker in the iwelumo mould if we can find one. We are in a strong position right now and we should seize the chance to capitalize on it.

People were saying that we should spend £5 million on Manncienne. Well that's half the cash gone straight away.

Personally would love to see us 'renew our interest' in Joe Ledley, although the price would probably now be £4m + add-ons. A young central/left midfielder with IMO real quality.

We all know Wolves do all their transfers discreetly and professionally, so this story is a non starter...its a nice thought though!

We need to freshen and strenghthen the squad in january ready for the final mile, but we don't want to destroy the team spirit. Its a fine line but I would keep most of the serious spending until the end of the season.

Absolute tosh - I can't imagine given our track record in transfers that any one in a senior position in the club would leak £10m to a reporter...rubbish reporting.

We may go for Mancienne - although a season long loan is more likely.
We are likely to strengthen the squad - although its doing well for us so far - when we've had injuries we've usually coped ok.

As someone said further up the thread lazy journalism.

It will be interesting to see what we do in January - I'd be very surprised if we don't sign a winger although I'd expect another loan signing given that we'll still not be sure where we are competing next season.

January certainly gives us the chance to outline our ambitions -would love to see us set up a couple of loan deals for proven quality (either from abroad or from the top flight) with a view to perm moves if we were to get promoted.

Edit: I read that we are extending the Mancienne deal until the end of the season - maybe we can arrange a deal as above?

Also, Ledley is a great shout by the way.

think we will strengthen - hopefully if we are still well clear start to look at players better than this league, so if/when we go up we wont have to buy a whole team (apart from 2 or 3 who are good enough already) and have players bedded in for PL.

It's easy to suggest that we go out in the january window and 'strengthen' - but how exactly?

The impressive thing about us this season is we have strength in depth now, competition for places and then there are players like Mark Davies and Gobern coming back. It's not easy to look at the side and improve on what we already have (for this level). I certainly cannot see us spending 10 million in the window at all.

To be fair, gobern and davies have been coming back from injury for two seasons. We need to make sure we have enough strength for the run in. A left winger and a dominant central midfielder either on loan or signed up is a must i think.

Don't think we need a massive injection of new players but just strengthening in general really, so if key players do get injured we have suitable back-up not just people filling in if you know what I mean.

A nice little bit of quality will do.

With Jarvis and Gibern coming back (who looked better than Jarvis against Stourbridge) we have an abundant of talent coming back for the left hand berth. Need to strengthen in central midfield

  22. Nashie

    Nashie Guest

Yea but where? And how will you get quality players to come and sit on our bench?

We have a very good forward lineup with different options, anyone bought in on loan wouldn't get into the squad let alone first team unless there were injuries.

The wings are probably the weak link with regard to cover but that illustrates the difficulty in unearthing the kind of talents we are fortunate enough to currently have with Kightly and Jarvis - the best wingers in this league by a long way. Carlos Edwards would be good cover if we could get him to the end of the season.

Central midfield - I think we are very fortunate with the balance of Jones and Henry with an excellent option of David Edwards on the bench, and we still have Darren Potter in the squad and hopefully Mark Davies will do well at Leicester and prove his fitness and regain his sharpness.

The defence is particularly interesting. We have a lot of left backs at the club now and I will be very interested to see what happens at the end of the season.

Elokobi, Friend, Hill and the surprise package of the season Stephen Ward.

In the centre I'd say we have a very promising partnership with Mancienne and Stearman (Stearman was tremendous on Saturday). If we can get Mancienne until the end of the season I'll be happy.

Foley is still superb at right back although I'm not sure what cover we have, is Mark Little out on loan?

The chairman might give Mick 10m but I doubt he'd spend it, he's very loyal to his players, and come the turn of the year we are still in the same position why would he need to? Better to keep it for next season.

    Little is crocked i think?

Short on proper right back cover, also ball winner as back up to Henry, wide left could do with strengthening and if really greedy an extra forward to take Keogh out of the firing line for a while so he can rebuild a bit of confidence

The £10m is a figure plucked out of this air, but Moxey's quotes are pleasing. What we can't do, is buy players who are incapable of making the step up - which means we're competing with the bottom 8 in the Premier League for players this January. They will spend, to help a survival bid, and so players will be more expensive, with better choices available to them. Personally, I'd extend the gash one's loan, and go for Bradley Orr, A. Winger and Ben Watson.

Of our current squad the following could cope in the Prem:

    Any keeper

    Foley
    Stearman
    Mancienne

    Kightly
    Jarvis ( maybe)

    SEB
Iwelumo - only as am impact sub

    For our starting 11 we would need a new;

    Left back
    2 central midfield players 27 - 30 age group
    and a striker / target man -
    left midfield/winger - Adam Johnson ?
    experienced CH like Hyppia

    Minimum spend £25m

Are there any players in the Champoinship who are good enough for us to buy ? For example are Marvin Elliot or Ben Watson or James Beattie good enough for the Prem ?

Can we gamble on foreigners who will take time to get used to prem ?

    What do we think ?

Man City are going to be offloading shedloads come Jan, so if I was going to indulge in idle speculation I would suggest that some of their lot could be in the gold and black before long. I would kill to get Hamaan, but that's probably a little optimistic. Vassell's probably more likely.

Ledley's had a dip in form this season, so I'm not sure his price would've increased that much from the last time we looked at him.

why do people seem to think iwelumo would not be good enough in the prem who else is out there as a target man i for one think he has just as much to offer as heskey and crouch the two most talked about target men in the prem.

I'd like to see a central midfielder come in during the January window - someone like Carsley at Brum. Bags of experience, wants to play (and win) football matches and act as a calming influence in the run in. There must be a few class acts not getting regular football at the moment. Is Hamann playing for City much at the moment?

His club turned down a £6m bid for him from Stoke in the August window - whilst being skint - so I would suggest that he is out of our reach this season.

Apart from Mancienne on (hopefully a season's loan) and perhaps Carlos Edwards on loan or perhaps bought for around 750k I'm not expecting much in January. Ben Watson would be a useful addition but from now on we need to buy Premiership quality as has been said and that is going to be tough in January and also in the summer.

Possible striker targets: Daniel Sturridge/Ched Evans, Leroy Lita, Chris Mackaill-Smith, Dexter Blackstock , Marlon Harewood (hope not)

Possible central midfielders: Ben Watson, Marvin Elliott, Andrew Surman, (is Giles Barnes anywhere near fitness at Derby after his major surgery early in the year?)

Wingers: Carlos Edwards, Scott Sinclair, Steve Hammill (loan at Blackpool ends in Jan), (Adam Johnson - in our dreams), Joe Ledley, Etienne Esajas

Prudence is still the word so can't see us blowing money on the likes Hamann who would command a silly wage although he is the type of player we need.

  39. I think its important to spend but adding too many players could have a negitive effect. 2 or 3 new signings would be ideal. We are in the best position we've been in years, I think its important to spend £x million to help guarantee promotion and the £30m+ that promotion brings.

The problem is, we want to continue with the policy of buying young hungry players, but ones which are of premiership potential. That narrows the field, and if you want to add proven premiership players it narrows the field even more.
