Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has promised more game time for Joe Gelhardt if he continues to impress for the Whites.

The Leeds youngster penned a new five-year contract at Elland Road earlier this week.

Gelhardt has been a superb signing for Leeds since joining for just £700,000 from Wigan in 2020.

After dazzling for the Under-23s, the 20-year-old has since become a mainstay in the first-team fold.

Gelhardt scored two Premier League goals last season, including the dramatic winner against Norwich.

He also provided a crucial assist for Pascal Struijk to equalise against Brighton in their penultimate game last term.

Overall, Gelhardt has played 22 times in the first team for Leeds.

The “incredible” talent has also had a productive pre-season, scoring during the club’s tour of Australia.

Speaking ahead of Leeds’ Premier League opener against Wolves, Marsch was asked about how he’ll manage the balance between Gelhardt and Patrick Bamford.

“They will dictate that more than anything,” Leeds Live quotes Marsch as saying.

“If Patrick is fit, strong and healthy, which we’re thinking he can be, then Patrick will play a lot of minutes.

“But I also have to be cautious of the fact that he hasn’t played a lot in the last 10 months and not kill him from the beginning physically and put him in danger of picking up little things.

“Joffy, the more he pushes himself and the more he takes advantage of every minute he’s on the pitch and continues to show his quality and understanding of what we want the game to look like, then he’s going to obtain more minutes and then he’ll be rewarded.”
