Liverpool have a lot of players with their contracts expiring next summer [Transfermarkt].

All of the talk tends to centre around Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, all of whom will enter into the final year of their existing agreements by August if no extension has been arranged.

Everybody knows that Liverpool want to keep Salah and based on his form in 2022, keeping Mane at Anfield is also massively important.

If any of the three is dispensable, it’s Firmino when you consider that Mane and Diogo Jota are now ahead of him in the pecking order when it comes to the number nine role.

However, there’s another contract Liverpool need to sort out this summer – and it’s probably the easiest of the lot.

UEFA MUST STOP! NEW CHAMPIONS LEAGUE COULD RUIN FOOTBALL

This is Naby Keita’s best season since joining the Reds in a £52 million deal back in 2018.

He has never scored as many goals as this season [four in all competitions, including three in the Premier League] and he seems to have conquered the fitness problems.

This season, he managed 14 starts in the Premier League and when you consider he could only muster 16 combined for the two previous campaigns, you could argue his body is getting better at handling the rigours of English football.

With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain off the boil and probably leaving Merseyside, Jordan Henderson turning 32 in a few weeks and Thiago Alcantara also prone to a niggling injury, evident by his potential absence in the Champions League final this weekend, now is the time for Liverpool to back Keita and reward his form and fitness with a new deal.

There’s a good chance that the former Red Bull Leipzig midfielder could start against Real Madrid in Paris on Saturday, with Thiago going off injured against Wolves this past weekend.

And whatever happens – win, lose or draw – a new contract could be sent his way shortly after the final.

The 27-year-old, lauded by Jurgen Klopp last month, is coming into the prime of his career and if he can stay fit, which seems a lot more realistic now than it did last term, then this is absolutely a player who Klopp is going to want to keep.
