I actually wonder how many points choosing a random number 0-2 for each side and ramdomly allocating asterisks would have generated? More than my 4 (sadly Man U scraped home) from the 5 theorerically completely predictable Prem games today I'm sure.

After a Saturday where prediction success was akin to a horde of drunken, blind orang-utans hurling darts at a greased pig on a speedboat, Sunday saw a flurry of points, and when the oily bacon bits finally settled, two players were distinctly out ahead of the pack. Congratulations to Jrpb-3 and John de Wolf's Hairdryer (who for the sake of my typing fingers shall be known for the rest of this post as JdW-H) as they each collected an impressive 37 points, all hard won in the toughest of weeks.

Since defeat in the Cup Final, Jrpb-3 has been on a screamer and collects his second weekly award inside three rounds, thanks to three correct scores, two doubled with hyperspace asterisks, and scoring points in five from seven Sunday games. JdW-H scored in six of seven Sunday games, like a determined child scooping the chocolate in an Easter Egg hunt while others looked on and wept with empty baskets, and he got four correct scores, one doubled, for his second-best total in the history of the league.

Wonder Boyo was third this week, with 29 points and four correct scorelines, all on Sunday after a disastrous Saturday - God blkess Arminia Bielefeld - and Wolf In Essex, Frank Lincoln, Geowolf and Don Corleone all got three correct. SG Wolves went into the final 5 games of the week on 2 points but, like a champion, hit two correct scores with asterisks when all seemed lost, and somehow ended joint fourth for the round; one of those "name on the trophy" moments, perhaps?

The week belongs to Jrpb-3 and JdW-H, however, and for the rest of us sadly staring at our busted coupons, it was a definite case of "These were not the draws we were looking for..."

SG Wolves' Easter Sunday miracle sees him remain 12 points ahead of Blast Tyrant, while a Cadbury's-smeared Wonder Boyo edges closer to Frank Lincoln in third. Wolf In Essex squeezes back into the top 10, and resurgent Jrpb-3 is now up to 11th - could an unlikely late charge for the title somehow be on the cards? He's rattling up those points at an alarming rate, folks!

About bloody time! 28 attempts before finishing [joint] top of the pile really does underline the lessons that patience is a virtue and that if at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again.

By this stage of the season, I'd given up on the hope of winning any weekly titles and was just striving to avoid finishing bottom of the list of all those players who've contributed every week. Managed to give myself some elbow room on that metric, but still not safe on that score by any stretch of the imagination though! :grimacing:

Also very relieved to not finish in a three-way tie for top spot after gently ribbing @SuperGran about her propensity for doing just that last week!!

Ok, this is how I see it.

Let's keep it simple and imagine that this method generates 9 possible results. So a 1 in 3 chance of a correct result and a 1 in 9 chance of a correct score.

So from 15 games 5 correct results of which 1.67 are correct scores. This yields 6.6 + 7.7 = 14.3 points. Plus asterisks add another 20% so let's say 17 points expected. 28 weeks played means my random generator should have yielded 476 points. So the sum total of 50 years of footballing knowledge, endless hours of (as my wife would put it) 'does this TV ever have anything but football on it?' has yielded an extra 75 points.

Obviously I'm ignoring the chance of teams scoring more than 2 goals but that's only affecting the correct score portion. I guess I should be glad just being better than a random selection (if my Maths is wrong please feel free to keep that to yourselves!).

I'd say I should put this much effort into my predictions, but that didn't seem to help...

I haven't kept accurate enough records to check back, which is probably a good thing, but I strongly suspect that if a squirrel had blindly predicted 1-1 for every fixture, week in week out, they would be sitting on anywhere between 580-620 points right now, depending on asterisks.

Crushing, isn't it? :D :D

I couldn’t predict the bloody sun coming up atm ……

I be one of the fat lads @SmokeyGB alludes too :(
Still, I have the memories of the SG three-way before being dumped - she’s a fickle one is @SuperGran

only one mystery remains, how has #friskyfrank not been involved in one?
