According to a report by The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for Jesse Lingard this summer after his Manchester United contract expired.

Spurs have already bolstered their midfield ranks in this window, signing Yves Bissouma, but there has been murmurs that Tottenham want to add a more attacking midfielder to their ranks.

Indeed, Christian Eriksen has been strongly linked, as has Paulo Dybala, but now, it seems as though Spurs are setting their sights on Lingard.

On paper, Lingard seems to be something of a downgrade on the likes of Eriksen or Dybala, but there is a reason behind this transfer.

According to this report, Spurs are keen on Lingard because he’d be another player who would help them fill their homegrown quota, and that’s incredibly valuable for a squad with the composition of Tottenham’s.

With the likes of Joe Roden and Japhet Tanganga potentially set to leave, Spurs need more homegrown players added to their squad, and, in that context, Lingard on a free wouldn’t be a bad signing at all.

It’s easy to turn your nose up at a player who has warmed the bench for Manchester United over the past 12 months, but let’s not forget, Lingard is a talented player in his own right.

He was one of the best players in the Premier League during his time at West Ham United, he’s a multi-time England international and he knows how to turn up in the big games, scoring in both the FA Cup and League Cup finals during his time at United.

Lingard may not be a starter for Tottenham, but he’d be a great depth option for Antonio Conte’s side.
